Prosperity is not a Spectator Sport

Posted By: Randy GageFebruary 15, 2009

The recent Super Bowl once again demonstrated  how sports obsessed the States and the rest of the world is.  It’s amazing how many guys listen to sports talk radio all week, tailgate eight hours before a game, devour the sports section in the newspaper, and stay up to watch SportsCenter every night.  There’s only one thing they never do…

Get off their ass and actually play a sport themselves.

They live their whole life vicariously through the athletes they idolize, all the while they put on more weight, raise their cholesterol, and inch closer to their heart attack.  But let’s not just pick on the sports fans…

How about you movie buffs?  When’s the last time you acted in a play?

And you literature buffs?  When are you going to actually write that book, play or poem you’ve been threatening to since the Carter administration?

You rock, jazz, country or blues fans?  When is the last time you picked up a guitar, blew a trumpet or pounded the keyboards?

Yes you can enjoy life reading great books, seeing beautiful art in museums, attending Operas and symphonies, watching elite athletes excel, and lots of other entertaining things.  But prosperity is not a spectator sport.  What are you doing to live it today?

  1. You're right Randy. Life so often becomes a rut with 10-12 hour work days that leave me drained of enthusiasm to LIVE when I'm away from the office. Finding that balance is an ongoing journey.

  2. I would agree about the "Truth Fairy" title. It's also directly what Hill says in "Think and Grow Rich". While many that watch "The Secret" countless times, the simple fact is that it's ACTION that makes it happen.

What I would love is some coaching on finding Purpose. As Rand says numerous times in her books, a Life without purpose is bland and fruitless. It's my feeling that when we discover Purpose, the action we take can bring about a level of Prosperity we've never even imagined. It's just finding it that for some like myself, can be challenging.

    My two cents Randy.

  3. Yes, and you also watch big fat losers exercise and lose weight, while you drink soda and eat potato chips.

Weight (pun intended), let me pause the show so I can get the ice cream out of the fridge.

Jonathan sums it up best for anything and everything...

    ACTION.

  4. Yesterday was a big day for me... I decided (as written in my yearly ACTION plan - not resolution plan, because we all know that just doesn't work right!) that I was going to prepare and materialize a Valentine's Day for my partner in life.

    Here's what actions happened yesterday:

    - Breakfast at a nice restaurant.
    - Movie at a theater.
    - 4 starts Hotel check-in with complimentary drinks.
    - Sushi dinner.
    - King size bed fun!

Of course, I could have "read bout it", "talk about it" or "think about it", but nothing will ever beat "ACTING UPON IT"!

If life is a bitch... I'm definitely pimping it! 🙂

    Take care RG.

    Regards,
    Adrian

  5. Hmmmm....that got the brain working! I always wanted to perform on stage so two years ago, I auditioned and landed a part in The Secret Garden. (#1 down) I had played the tenor sax in a jazz band for 6 years in high school but my kids had never heard me...so I pulled the old thing out and am having it reconditioned. (#2) I hope it's like riding a bike! Me, ride a bike??? Not for 30 years!! Guess what! I am off to the bike store!! Thanks RG!

  6. "Get off their ass and actually play a sport themselves"

    I really like this sentence!

PS. Yesterday I've read RG's book... Thats why I am here 😉 Impressed! Thank you!

  7. Nicely put Jonathan.
I'm also in the process of finding my purpose, but would do with some help and coaching to get there quickly.

  8. Agree with Jonathan.
I 'm also looking to find my life's purpose. It might sound funny but I 'm having difficulty finding one. Could do with some coaching and help.

  9. Part of discovering your purpose is finding your passion.
Ask yourself, what is your passion? Is it music?, helping feed the hungry?, saving animals? etc. You have to already be doing alot of soul searching into your life to really be able to answer the question.
That is the way it was for me anyway. I was asked by someone once what my passion in life was and to my astonishment, I couldn't answer.
It took alot for me to admit to myself that music is what drives me and opera in particular. To tell you the truth, that discovery scared the hell out of me! Why? In my family, no one ever dared pursue a career outside of a herd mentality job. Plus with the religion I grew up with, we're not allowed to pursue anything creative. It was all thought of as wasting time.
So... after working some things in my head out, I was able to finally figure out and finally admit to myself what my passion and thus my purpose is .

How am I acting on it? I am in the middle of starting my city's first ever opera company!

  10. There is nothing worse than folks moaning about their lives and doing sweet FA about it. We have had a lot of jealousy projected at us since we moved into our lovely new home by the sea from so-called friends who are decidedly envious. What on earth for? We got off our butts, believed we could manifest it, worked hard and made it happen despite the recession. Simple.

  11. Hi Randy

I totally agree with your post. I have read plenty of books about self improvement, success and prosperity and although they help it is not prosperity.

Prosperity has to be lived in real life. You have to really experience it, in full living colour. To do that you have to make it happen with action. Its not about reading about it in books or on websites. I have had enough of reading, dreaming and thinking about my hopes and dreams, I want to make them come true!

I am also looking for my Passion/Purpose.

I have identified many things related to it, for example I want to travel the world doing what I love, I want to start a business in that particular field. However I am struggling to find what exactly my Passion is.

Up until now I have mainly been thinking and dreaming about it. I have read books about people who have found theirs or are searching.

I think its time to actually get off my backside and take some action in finding it. To actively seek it. I intend to make finding my passion a great adventure.

Some questions id like to ask you Randy and others on this blog are:

    What is your Passion?

How do you know its your Passion?

Did you always know what is was or did you stumble upon it or actively seek it?

What do you suggest others can do to find their passion?

Is there anyone you can put me in touch with who has actively sought and found their passion? - I would like to ask them similar questions and eventually compile a whole database of helpful tips and suggestions that can help myself and others on a similar journey.

I appreciate all the help anyone can give on this matter!
    Best Wishes
    Ari

  12. Hey RG! I was just thinking the EXACT same thing on Val's nite in HK at some bar where it was packed with people watching some rugby game between wales & scotland..or something like that. Not that there's anything wrong cheering the teams they support, but er...I'd rather be playing than watching myself... It has always amazed me the amount of energy invested. I thought I was weird when I was growing up & wasn't a fan of anything or anyone. Know I know I'm weird. But I also know why. 🙂 Anyway, see you at Go Diamond! in GC! Love ya.

  13. Hi Ari,
for answers to some of your questions see my comments above. Feel free to ask me anything else on this subject.

    Take care,

What a great grab you by the back of the collar and shake you around a bit headline. I appreciate your straight forwardness in telling us to get our ass in gear.

  15. While this clearly isn't a blog on network marketing... I can see a correlation here.

Life truly isn't a spectator sport and I think that also applies to how we are setting out to achieve out dreams. We spend our lives in the 40, 40, 40, 40 mode (40 hours a week, for 40 years, at 40k per year and in the end only having a 40 Timex to show for it)...

...and never "get up off of our asses" and build something that's "ours" instead of building someone else's dreams.

  16. Hey Randy, I have subscribed to your newsletter for years and love your style. I wanted to report that I have finally busted loose from the money game and thanks largely to your influence, just bought a round-trip ticket from Honolulu (I live on Maui) to Venice First Class all the way and it felt damn good!

Even once you make the shift into increased prosperity it's rather shocking noticing how insidious the lack programmig is ingrained in our psyches. I have to constantly be aware of automatic thoughts that aren't really how I feel such as "But do you really need that? Isn't that too expensive? Shouldn't you save that money for something else? etc."

And for those looking for their purpose... I thought I was too, until I woke up one day and realized that my purpose is just to be and I stopped looking for anything beyond that and suddenly everything came rushing into my reality and I feel more creative and on purpose than I ever have, yet I have no purpose!
