Prioritizing Success

Posted By: Randy GageAugust 9, 2010

It’s sure easy to get busy.  And the more successful you get, the easier it is to get busier.  And that’s where the danger comes in…

You get so busy and so successful, you think you don’t have time for self-development.  Probably the biggest mistake any of us can make.

I know I’m guilty of this.  But I also know your income, health, relationships, and pretty much anything else will plateau at the level of your current consciousness.  And to break the plateau, you have to break through to higher levels of self-development.

You have to make time for exercise, for reading, for meditation and learning.  And the most amazing people make time for these things every day.

So how you doing on that?

  1. I definitely make time for my health. I drive home from work nearly every day to cook myself lunch, otherwise I take in something healthy. I also exercise 5-6 times/week. I read at least 15 minutes from a worthwhile book every day and since I live on my own, I have plenty of quiet time to just be with my thoughts or not even think much at all. For me, my dancing is meditation. It's physical exercise, but I switch off from everything else. On the learning front however, I've been a bit slack of late. Work has provided so much stimulation and so many new experiences that it has taken the place of formally learning something new. In the short term that's not bad at all, but I do think that it would be good to do something in the near future.

  2. I'm doing good on the exercising, learning (I NEVER stop growing when it comes to learning new ways to grow mine and my clients businesses), reading...

... meditation is really the only one lacking. I actually fall asleep listening to Holosync which is both relaxing and has some subliminal stuff going on - but I need to start actually meditating again... I've been slacking!

  3. I heard one of the "guru's" say - can't remember who - that most people major in minor things when it comes to their own lives. I started learning about personal development in the mid 80's...books, tapes (at that time -hahaha), seminars, etc. I was newly sober at the time, and was thirsty for knowledge and change. I did change in a profound way, but have noticed over the past 10 years or so that I have been majoring in minor things - like how to pay the bills rather than how to create abundance. Or saying a quick prayer, rather than engaging in a deep meditation. Or, take a quick walk after dinner, rather than dig in for some meaningful exercise. I suppose I have become complacent.

So Randy, thanks for the wake up call in this post! Time to go to work....and I don't mean my job!

    Have a great week.

  4. This morning I posted this on my wall:
Every morning you are handed 24 golden hours. They are one of the few things in this world that you get free of charge. If you had all the money in the world, you couldn't buy an extra hour. What will you do with this priceless treasure? Remember, you must use it, as it is given only once. Once wasted you cannot get it back.

  5. So very true! Especially since I am my "own boss" and don't have access to corporate training programs any more. Twitter has been a life-saver. I've surrounded myself with an intelligent tribe of people who feed me links that inform and "train" me every day. This is also essential for me as a college educator -- I need to stay on top of the latest trends. The other adavtage of Twitter is it comes to you in little pieces every day when you can fit it in. While most people regard Twitter as essential for connections, I actually think it's role as an on-demand trainign program is the best benefit!

  6. Every day I am reminded to do the fundamentals -- no inspiration comes in business. When I work on my calendar, I schedule in quiet contemplation time. Also, the more energy one builds, the more resources come. So, I am huge on movement -- QiGong works really well for me because I feel the energy as it builds. But, my absolute favorite thing to do is read -- the Kindle has sure helped me there, because I can take it with me in my purse and read between appointments. Hope these ideas help someone!

  7. Have fallen a little bit off the wagon, Randy, but my Mastermind Partner and I (and YOU!) are putting the priorities right up there where they belong.

Thanks so much for a great reminder and swift kick in the pants!

  8. Randy,
My whole life at one time consisted of work and nothing else. Than I started going to 12 Step Meetings.
Evertime I feel the question "Is that all there is?" I know it is time to move on to the next level.

For the past 3 years I have been trying to think of my life as a wheel. If one of the spokes is broken or one side is low than the whole ride is off.

Balance is what I have been striving for. I have also allowed myself to do what I want to do not what I think others think I should be doing.

  9. I am doing excellent in meditation (1 hour a day), good in reading and learning (30 minutes a day each) and not good in exercising (2 hours a week).
Need to improve in that area.
I need to create a daily rutine about it, so when personal success does keeps growing, I already have a solid habit about it too.
    Thanks for the reminder!

  10. Hi Randy,

    Very Kool !

I find the better I do at this, the more in my Zone I am.

Great being able to stop at any time to focus on meditation, self improvement and exercise having my own home business !

Love hearing meditation included, quite time with the Big Guy, getting to know our oneness.

Have To Much FUN My Friend !!!

  11. And the best would be if you do all these things without making time for them.As a part of life, like you have to eat and sleep. Then they will make the most of you!

  12. Randy,

My current routine begins at 4am and normally ends at 10pm. When I lived on submarines the routine I found most comfortable was an 18 hour cycle. Living above water the 24 hour cycle works best. I commit to a minimum of 10 pages a day of new reading and 10 pages of process reading. Currently the new reading is The Practicing Mind by Thomas Sterner and Managing Life's Energies by Maria Nemeth. The two books I am processing, rereading for implementation, are Linchpin by Seth Godin and The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson. The two books next up are The War of Art by Steven Pressfield and Aspire by Kevin Hall.

Reading one page a day of the New Testament completes it in less than 8 months. Reading 3 pages of the longest version of the Torah or Old Testament will take less than 11 months. Read one, process the other, switch and repeat. The different versions make for interesting reading. You can take the 114 chapters of the Quran reading 25 versus a day finish it in a year.

Some people exercise and listen to an audio book at the same time. I use my morning workout for inspiration but I do spend 30 minutes of it at the end studying Spanish every day. I am a slow learner. I cut out the tube for all but maybe an hour a day. I haven’t watched a newscast in months and limit my exposure to ‘news’ to 15-30 minutes a day. I used to spend more time on ‘current events’ so I could have something to talk about with people…. Gag, that is a rationalization if there ever was one.

What is the question to which your life is the answer? [now, today, tomorrow, …] I am interested in the answers and the results. I refuse to believe it is one or the other. You can have both.

  13. All that you mention is important and necessary for growth, however, a healthy diet should be included. Good health plays a vital part in providing vigor and endurance for the other roles that we "play".
    Gloria

  14. Randy,

Thanks for the reminder. By listening to your post I have decided to shut the computer off and go for a walk in a few.

I usually do things by the clock....need to gain that discipline again.

  15. How am I doing on that? As of lately not very well. I decided to take Saturday and Sunday completely off though, regardless of who wanted what.

  16. True story! I took time off from facebook, blogs, TV, distractions, etc.., and now I am down to a near smokin' size 6, joined Tony Robbins & Chet Holmes for some heavy duty business breakthroughs, some meditative remote viewing, and walking every evening.

I am learning to live smart not hard. Moreover, all the old stuff, I sold them on ebay to make room for new things to come into my life.

Randy, your blogs and books definitely help me to see where I could step beyond my habits and onto new unchartered possibilities.
    Thank you.

    *Happiness truly comes from within.

  17. Good post. Great challenging question!

Reminds me of the John Wooden quote, "It's what you learn after you know it all that counts".

I believe that we need to be open to learning and growing our entire lives and especially after we have achieved high levels of success!

You're either growing or dying...even at the top of the tree!

  18. I'm doing fairly well on that. Morning routine of reading scriptures, a chapter a day. Three Sun Salutations and various movement/stretching exercises, breakfast; a new discipline that is aiding in the weight loss, daily reading and contemplation. Now, I am consciously working on changing the closest 5 people in my life. If I am the smartest of my friends, then I need new ones! Thanks Randy. Always looking forward to hearing from you.

    1. Lol.
Yes Randy you evil man sharing all of the wisdom that you have been learning for decades.

It is especially evil that you are supporting people all over the world to be healthy, fit, intelligent, free, abundant, caring and spiritual.

      Shame on you. lol

If that is 'Evil' then I would love to meet the Devil, because he would be really useful. 😉

  19. I sure have not been reading enough and gaining more knowledge - I've been great on everything else. I've allowed the summer to take over, but I'm determined to get back on track in September with Chris St. Hilaire's new book, "27 Powers of Persuasion." I work in sales and this one looks great because the author teaches you how to assess your own ego and make your weaknesses your strengths while at the same time showing you the most effective way to deal with opposition. This should kick start me back into the game!
