Practice

Posted By: Randy GageOctober 8, 2011

Remember the first time you tried to ride a bike? Play a musical instrument? Make a presentation?

Just as a baby makes falls to learn to keep their balance, you will have to face some failures to develop skills, gain confidence, and get better.

Let experience teach you. Let obstacles become lessons. If I’ve learned anything it is this:

You can’t look good and get better at the same time!

So don’t be afraid to fail, as long as you learn and move forward. And always remember: You are overcoming to become.

Ain’t it great!

  1. It would be nice to find short run and wake up in the morning and find myself whom I am becoming. Well, but life requires practice forward and success comes as a reward. Patience and determination.

  2. Hi Randy.

I remember that you told (wrote) about self-discipline in comments to one of your posts.. Today I thought that I still lack discipline...And that I failed..let myself be victimized again..But decided to continue working on my mental attitude towards myself anyway/ I can't give up, I just can't!
Then this post came up. It's such a good support, friendly reminder, and even more... Thank you so much for doing this!

  3. RG,

Practice makes better. More practice makes you better than better.

Continue, and you get better. Simple, powerful, and the way you get better at stuff. Practice.

If you do not practice, you do not get better. If you make excuses to not practice, you do not practice, and you stay the same (die a little more), or get worse at your craft.

How you live your life is a series of seemingly little choices each moment. I will write the blog post. I will take a day off. I will shoot the video. I will take the day off. The choice-maker is fully responsible for the choice. Outside conditions or feelings surrounding a choice....do not make the choice.

Practice. Or do not practice. Either way, your choice. Can't get past that.

I practice quite a bit. Many of my youtube videos are "curious" ;), but I don't care. I have almost 800 of them. Some have zero views. I don't care. I keep going. Because I know each creative act is prospered. I know each practice session prepares me for the world stage. So I keep practicing, building confidence, and honing my vision.

Same deal with blogging. 1000 posts. In the beginning, hundreds had a few views. I practiced though, ignored appearances, and improved.

Same deal with the thousands of comments I've left. Many others leave a Drive-By comment, I practice. Over time, I made impressions. Then , I made connections. Now, I make more money. Practice. Practice. Practice.

I fail. I get criticized. I practice. I get better. I become wealthier. I meet more people. My influence expands. I practice.

    Thanks RG!

    Ryan

  4. Randy, thanks, you are a godsend. Decades ago before this 'instant-on, always-on' for constant connectivity to people, I was inclined to personal development. I remember clearly purchasing the whole series of 'Norman Vincent Peale's' positive thinking books from the then 'Select Bookstore'

Even paid over one thousand dollars to attend Anothony Robbins session inclusive of walking over fire. Then plateaued, did a lot of 'other things' and now resusitated, revived and recharged. Partly I am afraid to be questioned by my grand children like "Grandma, we heard there was an economic boom while we were growing up but where were you? How do I respond to this, maybe just be deaf at will.
    Thanks again.

  5. Many many years ago I attended one tutorial class in Germany (sent by the company I was employed in) a session based on a book 'I am ok, You're ok" by Thomas A Harris. MD. - a practical guide to transactional analysis. It was interesting and..

it would be also nice if some one can write a book on 'I am not ok and you're not ok and that's ok'. I think no one is going to bat 100 per cent or even close to it all the time. All that is important is, generally speaking we are doing our best and that we are moving in the right direction.

I really appreciate your reminder and encouragement to just keep on practising, doing and do not take hurt or rejection personally. Cie la vie and this is a good life! I think teaching/coaching is a noble profession because you are imparting.....

    Ain't it great!

  6. Hi Randy,

so true, practice is critical. When a child learns to walk, she falls down many times, her parents are even happy when she falls down and they encourage her to try it again until the magic happens ! The same holds true for the learning of our native language. Most parents know that they're not supposed to correct their kids directly, but to repeat what they said or intertwine it with a question so she hears the correction naturally.

Unfortunately, this natural way of learning falls into oblivion when kids go to school - instead of being encoraged, they are being criticized for making mistakes. If people had to learn their native language like a foreign language is being taught in school, nobody on this planet would talk because everybody would be afraid of making mistakes.

Is this the number 1 cause of failure ? Fear of making mistakes because mistakes are considered as something bad and we are being punished ? In sports and business, we will have to practice over and again and we will even make the same mistakes several times, won't we, until we really get it...

    Thanks for sharing your insigths.

    Take care

    Oliver

  7. Also reminds me of a saying I've had posted for my daily viewing for years...."Success in the end eclipses the mistakes along the way"..it is great and thanks for your daily inspirations
