Playing Big to Play Small

Posted By: Randy GageFebruary 26, 2013

So you’re committed to playing BIG:  Writing that great American novel.  Launching the next billion-dollar IPO.  Producing that Oscar-worthy documentary.  Starting that foundation that’s going to eradicate poverty.  Great.

So show me.  Show the world.  Better yet, show yourself.

If you haven’t started writing that great work yet because there are too many distractions – you’re lying to yourself.    Likewise if you haven’t started that new venture because you’re trying to put together the financing.

People who play big don’t wait around getting ready to get ready.  And they don’t wait until everything is set perfect and there is no chance of failure before they begin.   In fact, they usually begin when the chance of failure is the greatest.  Because that’s when the biggest opportunities are.

Sometimes we play big, because we’re really using it as an excuse to play small.

We set goals so monumental, so we can impress our circle of influence and especially ourselves that we are serious about success.  But the real reason for the huge objective is because it’s easier to procrastinate doing it.

Ninety percent of the time when I’m counseling people, they are using brash, audacious goals to lie to themselves.  They set some demanding objectives that make taking any simple action toward them seem mundane and unworthy of the goal.  But the only thing that’s unworthy is their belief in themselves.

Painters paint.  Entrepreneurs launch.  Writers write.  Builders build.

So you have a bold, breathtaking vision: great.  But if you’re just using that as an excuse for not getting started, not so good.  If you’re serious about it, what are you doing to get there today?

  7. Are you talking to me? Cause here's a guy with a big vision (& not shy to share it) and yet seems to be going nowhere fast. But hey, at least I've got my big vision to pacify me and help me feel better about myself.

  10. Like Ram Dass said years ago, "Before enlightenment, carrying water and chopping wood. After enlightenment, carrying water and chopping wood".. Writers write. Doers Do. And most importantly, the ONLY way to get there from here is by taking the steps rather than coming up with excuses why we can't.

    BOOM!

  12. Randy, I'm not too fussed about being successful and I don't quite think that earning massive paychecks could ever restore my faith earning online. My biggest let down over 17 years was my faith in Google's Adsense program. I created an account purely for charities and nothing ever came of it? That in itself is nothing short of betrayl by a company who promotes good things for advertising scripts on their behalf!

I also opened an Amazon-Affiliate-Account strictly for charity but over many years of contextual advertising on their behalf, not even a mention.

On a personal scale, I am just happy to invent my daily routine and enjoy what life has to offer, without the added pressures of success.

With Success, there is always the illusion that everything is working the way you planned, but that's nowhere near the real truth.

Just happy to be who I am, no frills, nothing special, just an ordinary man; http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/wa/9098758/photo-helps-widower-get-back-on-feet/

  14. This is a great post. What I would add to this is if youre an entrepreneur..
is dont follow the money when you are launching..

Whatever I do - I must have passion for - then the money will come.. - and my energy will never drain..

Too many people follow the money but they never become fulfilled or passionate about their business..

  18. so, the best time to act is when the risk of failure its the greatest? so, i should act expecting failure to happen? am i supposed to act when failure has like 99% chance to occur  when chasing my dreams?

    1. Hi Ralph, always the best time to act is now...

Some people fail for 6 months others for 6 years or 16 years.., etc..

All you have to do is to resolve to yourself that you will be a man - put up with the failure - never quit - keep going..

If you do this and consistently take action - i promise you - you will succeed..
