Overwhelming the Overwhelm

Posted By: Randy GageFebruary 12, 2009

So what do you do when you are simply overwhelmed with all of the things you need to do?  I’ll tell you what I do:

I wash my car.  Change the sheets on my bed.  Or stop working on every single project, and take absolutely everything off of my desk.  Then I sort it into project piles on the floor.  Then I write a ‘to do” list of all the projects, and prioritize them.  It completely eliminates the overwhelm feeling and I start making serious progress checking things off the list.

Other times I might clean out the medicine cabinet.  Or the “junk” drawer.

What you’re doing when you do these kinds of things is imposing the vacuum law of prosperity in your life.  You remove the clutter and busyness in your life, and you create a vacuum for harmony.

So where do you need to create a vacuum in your life right now?

  1. I love the idea of a vacuum law of prosperity. And it's nice knowing that there is something strategic about cleaning out a junk drawer on top of just procrastinating. Even though it's a good thing to do I feel I'm not "supposed" to do it when I've got real work to do.
Think I'll put this into practice today.

  2. Randy, do you have a spy-cam trained on me? (If so, I just waved "hello" to you!) This blog entry was so timely, it's spooky.

About an hour ago, I was sitting at my computer, feeling absolutely overwhelmed with everything I need to do. (Much of it needed to be done "yesterday".) So I walked away and spent 20 minutes cleaning stuff out of my closet instead. It's just what you prescribed --- except that I felt guilty afterwards about avoiding my responsibilities.

Your perspective about removing clutter and busyness to "create a vacuum for harmony" is just what I needed to hear, and exactly when I needed to hear it. I feel better now. Thanks!

  3. I just clean my closet and my desk a few days ago......I am cleaning my life to all the things that i do not need anymore, to open the door to a new light...
    Thanks Randy,

  4. Thanks for the reminder Randy. This is an amazing reminder, truly. The mental clarity that comes afterward is SOOOOO nice. It allows me to take everything with a new perspective and complete the work at hand with such an ease.

Like Monica, I'm cleaning life right now. It took me a while to stop worring and start the cleaning. On the move again.

    Thanks for the post.

  5. I too have started "making space for more" - it must be the season! Anyway, my focus has been on getting finished all the little projects round the house that I started and left half-done. Can't tell you how much better I'm feeling already - and I can hear the whoosh of money flowing in .....
Thanks Randy - you really have your finger on the pulse of the world.

  6. Haha I love this! This is the thing I love most to do when i feel overwhelmed, right now I'm doing this in my bedroom and with my clothes (give away clothes I'm not wearing for instance) Mostly I'm in the cleaning up mood, let's clean my desk, organize this or that, ... AND FOCUS on the present, on the NOW and free myself of all that mental rollercoaster crazyness! And we could all use more clarity and harmony in our mind sometimes : )
    Thanks!

  7. With a new move in sight, I am purging the old and excitedly awaiting what the vacuum will bring my way!! Thanks RG!

  8. Seems we're all on the same page (the effect of the recent Eclipses maybe?). Major clearing out in our house too. (Just moved into new home and chucking loads of our old stuff out as it doesn't fit our new life). When I am in overwhelm I go clean the bathroom, or clear one thing in each room, then go back to the office and similar to Randy sort the piles out and prioritise them. Taking some time off to just walk around in nature or the garden and let my mind wander and unhook also helps a lot.

  9. Hey Randy,
Have been subconsciously asking you for the last 2 days.... and the answer came.
If Jim thinks you have a camera, I believe that my mind was connected to yours, and I was asking you how do you manage to be so effective and have done all the things you do in a day?
What I think would be very inspiring , would be to have a couple of days to follow you around and learn what does the day of a very, very successful person looks like and copy it.

May only good things happen to you.
I'll work my ass of so I can walk in your shoes very soon.

  10. Right now I should pass the vaccuum under my desk. There are very big dust bunnies and I they look mean.
Every morning, very early, first thing first, I sit down in my comfy chair and create a vaccuum in my mind. They I write down whatever pops up. Then I prioritize. It is amazing what you can achieve in a day when you do that.
Tomorrow morning I think that the dust bunnies are going to attack me when I meditate so I am sure that they are going to be first on my list (this time).

  11. This must be synchronicity - I have been in a state of overwhelm recently and your advice is perfect timing.

Thanks Randy - please come to UK sometime, we need you!

  12. Create a vaccum, I should of had my wife read this. She came home today with a miniture vaccum. She said it's for the grandkids, when they come over they will want to help her clean the house.

The kid's not due for 8 3/4 months. So she is in the process of filling the vaccum. And I am in denial (I'm not old yet) mentally I cant be a grandfather. My hairs not grey!

  13. I need to create a friend vacuum. I was just downstairs cooking dinner contemplating a friend who played up this week who has a birthday party next weekend that I'm invited to and I was wondering whether I should skip her party even though some of my other friends will be there. Your vacuum suggestion came at a good time - a confirmation of what I had been thinking. I was also thinking how good it will be to go overseas for 3-12 months in April - it's a great excuse to withdraw from many friendships and a fabulous opportunity to establish new ones.

  14. Hi Randy,

I have recently undertaken a project that involves defining happiness and success. I've decided to ask hundreds of successful people for their interpretation and will include the most insightful thoughts in my finished project (anonymously of course).

Instead of asking you what I plan on asking most people, I would like to know if you have anything missing in your life. Is there anything you don't have that would bring you more happiness and success than you are currently experiencing?

    Thx,
    Mike

  15. Isn't that why the rich get richer? They have more of their drawers being cleaned by more people...

    Less clutter = more prosperity!

It all suddenly makes sense! Thanks Randy!

  16. Actually things are going so wonderful for me I don't really think so. Health, friends, money, creativity and everything else seems to be on quite an upswing. Although I could use a private jet like the one he had in Ironman...

  17. Good advice, but what I got the most from it was the fact that Randy Gage still feels overwhelmed at times.

I fel so much better now:)
