Not So Fast…

Posted By: Randy GageDecember 12, 2012

I don’t really watch the news, but always catch the headlines on social media.  And since some of the recent bad news is sports related, I’ve been hearing it in the gym when doing my cardio.   Lots of rushing to judgment and calls for retribution, but that’s not a prosperity mindset...

Aussie DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian made a prank call to a London hospital.  The nurse who took the call, Jacintha Saldanha, committed suicide a few days later.  The Twitterverse and even mainstream newspapers were quick to rain down on the duo.  There were even headlines “Blood on their Hands.”

Not so fast…

No one knows what went on in Jacintha’s mind and we might never find out.  But you have to figure there was more going on that the fact she was on the receiving end of a prank phone call.   The DJs could never have foreseen such an outcome.  And before we condemn them and make sanctimonious proclamations about everything having consequences, let’s just take a breath.

We have all done foolish things.  All done things we wish we could take back, but can’t.  This is a horrible tragedy, but let’s not be so fast to assign blame.

Last weekend KC Chiefs player Jovan Belcher shot his girlfriend and then took his own life, as horrified coaches watched.  There was another shooting in New York that made headlines a couple days later, and last night another gunman shot two people in a Portland shopping mall.

As whenever tragedies like this occur, people are screaming to ban all guns.  The other side cites the second amendment and feels that it allows citizens to carry AK 47’s and other assault weapons.

Not so fast…

This is not a simplistic issue and it won’t be resolved with dogmatic ideology.  There are many layers of complexity here and it requires mindful and respectful discussion from both sides.  There are some crazy, sick people who will do crazy, sick things, and they can't all be protected and legislated against.

Over this last weekend Dallas Cowboys player Jerry Brown died in a car crash.  The car was being driven by teammate Josh Brent, who has been arrested for intoxication manslaughter.   Brent is being demonized and the two football related incidents are now being held up as examples of more out-of-control, overpaid athletes running amok.

Not so fast…

People killing other people with guns is not a football or sports issue.  People driving while intoxicated is not a football or sports issue.   These are issues that run across our entire society.  Superstar athletes make the headlines, but these things happen every day, all around us.

Yes, Josh Brent made a horrific and foolish mistake.  One he will have to live with for the rest of his life.  It’s easy to make him the face of evil, or the poster boy for drunk drivers who kill innocent people everywhere.

Not so fast…

We weren’t there, and we haven’t walked in his shoes.  I know this:  If I was offered the choice between being the drunk driver who was responsible for killing my best friend passenger – or being the passenger who got killed – it’s possible I would choose the dead passenger option.

These are terrible tragedies and people have made some very bad choices.  Choices they probably wish they could take back.    And who among us has not?

I have been shot by an assailant, so I’m not so quick to tell people they can’t own guns to protect themselves.  And I’m also not so eager to see lone gunman arming themselves on the Internet with more weapons than a SWAT team.  I have said and done foolish things that I wished I could take back.  I have been powerless over addictions, so I am not so quick to judge others who face those demons.

So let’s not be so fast to condemn, attack and made judgments…

There are children without parents, and parents who have lost their children.    Justice must be done, and wrongs must attempt to be righted.   But that can only happen through a higher consciousness:

Empathy.  Prayers.  Forgiveness.  That is the prosperity consciousness we need right now.

  1. Clear, beautiful, insightful! Exactly what I have come to expect from you.
You have a double faceted -mental-heart- lazor that cuts through the stereotyped reactive processes that most people go to automatically. Guiding others not to go to a default setting, but to see each incident, each person through fresh clean clear eyes, THAT is YOUR gift, and I love and thank you for it more than you know. Blessings on this auspicious occasion of 12/12/12

  3. I think its really about developing critical thinking, like you discuss at length in Risky is the New Safe. People need to understand that correlation is not causation.

  5. Nicely written Randy.  People send alot of time on content and their 'picture of reality' instead of looking to the context of which any given situation occurs.  Content/ context, two very differing view points.  I personally do not believe people do stupid, crazy things.  That in itself is a judgement call.  If people knew better, they would do better.  Yes, people do know that their may be consequence to some behaviours but it is a persons level consciousness that I believe determines many choices.  Your choices earlier in your life, as mine and others has brought us all to who we have 'chosen' to become today.  There are no mistakes.  Everything serves consciousness, your own and everyone elses, if one chooses.  Thank you for taking the time to write this blog.  Many blessings to you and all those you care for, which I'm sure is all.    Ariel

  7. Randy,
condemning anybody as a person does not lead us anywhere, but we can still condemn the action. The media, especially in the UK and some in Australia is running amok in private and public people's lives. Wouldn't it show that they learned from their action by starting a movement of more considerate journalism, which looks at the consequences of their actions in advance. Just look at the phone tapping scandal in England.
Here comes another critical thinking question: Why do we here in Florida have to hear or know about a shooting in Oregon, or Paris, or Sydney? This society has bigger problems than crime, which is not in our city. We all need to work on a positive vision for our city, state and nation and not be distracted with the daily crime report.
Once we work on that vision, we don't have time and desire to sit in judgement of other people.

  9. Thanks Randy-- this is the post I was about to write (or, should I say, 'right'). Last week I told my soon-to-be 15 year old daughter, "Don't do anything you wouldn't want advertised on the front page of the newspaper." Which, in essence, means, "you are 100% responsible for your own behavior." I'm still working on that too!

  11. Guns cause death the same way spoons make people fat. Banning guns will not end murder just as banning spoons will not stop obesity. Murderers don't obey gun laws but the honest people who would protect themselves and their families from the armed criminals would be disarmed. When trying to ban guns people always forget Switzerland has an assault rifle in almost every home and also one of the lowest crime and murder rates in the world.
    Great Post as usual Randy!

  13. One of the things I remind myself often of is "Never say Never". Too often I have said that I would NEVER do a certain things, only to find out that, in the same circumstances, I DID do the same thing. Remember that saying about throwing the first stone!!

  15. Great post and I agree and these incidents are people in singular acts, not serial killers etc... The Whole Concept of Self-responsibility and when to Act, Protect etc.. is a very multi-layer subject that is layered with Theology, Psychology, Karma, Dharma, Fate, Retribution, etc... etc.. etc...  what people's belief's, Values etc are and Unless we know what and or who that person is and what they are and have gone thru we just never know...

  17. Randy, to me this is very exemplary of the memes and mind viruses both you and Dr. Dyer talk about constantly. And since they are in truth, the 'engine' that runs our limiting beliefs, poor self esteem and in these cases, violence, it's important we do the work to release them while being completely present every moment of every day. And yes, compassion is a quality we must ALL adopt since by nature, we are compassionate beings extending love everywhere.. Thanks for sharing this..

  19. Great Post Randy, Thank You! In all areas, especially from one whose Mother yells at her for not watching the news, at the end of the day personal responsibility and accountability falls by the wayside by those in the crisis and those who judge those in crisis. Not so fast could even say 'Place yourself in their shoes' to encourage all of us to refrain from passing judgement as we would wish the same of others toward us. Your words are soooooo true! 21. Amen brother.  Thank you for the post.

When we all quit deferring our personal power to others including govts, and connect with that voice within that is crying out for sovereignty, crying out to own one's life, we will probably get somewhere in how we respect each other's sovereignty and mistakes.

People are starting to connect in all kinds of wonderful ways, even with the impersonal digital nature of most people's lives.  People are starving for it.  We will not have so many knee jerk reactions as we connect diretly with our fellow man.  Much harder to condemn and curse someone regardless of their celebrity if we are face to face, looking into their eyes, shaking their hand, know the town they come from, how many kids they have, and so on.  Even if the person has done or seemingly done something we have real trouble with.  Connect with your neighbors......now!!  If nothing else, they may be the only ones during the next Katrina or Sandy that will be able to assist you.

And, let me let go of all my judgements in this lifetime!  Work in progress.

As an interesting side note....do you ever see a mass shooter anywhere but this country, the home of mass use of psychotic drugs?  Incredibly rare, almost non-existent anywhere else but here....other than our military out of the country.  If one even takes a simple look at these drug induced psychotic episodes in any detail one will always find the same questions.....why is the guy always linked to a "handler(s)"?  Who are these other odd folks that seem to always be present during or preceding the event?  Why is the dupe always on the usual same drugs?  Why are they always curiously tied to a moment where govt is wanting to intrude further in people's lives, or simply keep the massive fear and the divide and conquer campaign going?

    Thank you.

  23. Through the lens of the media and social networking, the darkness and evil in the world is more and more in our faces. It has, and always will continue to exist. The upside of this is it is easier for the good to get through if you are listening.

  27. While I certainly don't believe we should demonize athletes and other entertainers when their lives go south, guns and the Second Ammendment are long overdue for serious discussion.

I think Americans own guns because violence is beat into our brains.  Movies teach us how "simple" it is  to snuff out another human being and to take revenge without serious consequence.  These are horrific brain captures and breed generation after generation of gun-toting "good" citizens waiting for an accident to happen or a one-off fit of rage leading to an unforeseeable bullet rampage.

I am an American living in Japan and this American obsession with guns looks and feels infantile and unnecessary from this side of the Pacific.  It is not homogeneity that makes Japan an extremely safe country, it's sensibility and very very strict gun/weapon control laws.

Despite all kinds of conspiracy theories about the need to protect  ourselves from a possible future totalitarian state run by the powers that may be, my spin is that the takeover will not be with bullets but with high-tech brainwashing and other mental machinations.

Get rid of guns and lock up anyone carrying one privately for twenty years.  Criminals will be off the street faster than the law enforcement officials can swing open the door to the jailcells.  The criminals that Second Ammendment defenders talk about when defending their right to arm will be wiped out in less than a decade.

    1. @RichardPosner. Not so fast!!!!! Governments murdered over 240,000,000 of their own people, excluding war, last century. Those who forget
history are doomed to repeat it. The first thing every dictator does is take away the guns from the people then they are forced to obey all evil laws. It is not the guns that cause the death it is the people. Criminals can always get guns and they don't obey gun laws. In the UK only the criminals have guns and we have some of the highest crime rates in the world. It takes a lot more courage to break into a home of armed people than unarmed families.

      1. @WDavidCz Keeping them honest:  The United Kingdom historically had one of the lowest rates of gun homicides in the world even before gun control legislation became stricter from the late twentiethWhat are governments century.  In The United Kingdom there are 0.22 recorded intentional homicides committed with a firearm per 100,000 inhabitants; for comparison, the figure for the United States was 3.0, and for Germany 0.2.  Source:  Wikipedia

What are those governments that murder 240,000,000(what source, please?) but people like you and me.  If you blame the biggest genocidal nation, the United States, as a justifcation for bearing arms, then let the Darwinian blood-letting begin.  Shoot first and ask questions later.   The world population is not sustainable anyways.

Crime is a result of seeds falling into thorns and stony ground.  It is the result of inherent racism which vibrates throughout societies.  It's the result of believing that Jesus died or didn't die on the cross for our sins or perceived sins.  It's a deeply-rooted belief that anyone or anything can be bad to the bone by nature rather than by an imperception.   Crime is perceived injustice taken to the umpteenth level of retribution or blind rage.

No, guns do not kill people.  People kill people.  But  gratuitous, unchecked violence on TV and other media certainly plant seeds of indifferent evil in both the "good" and the "bad" inhabitants of our planet.

Anytime one group of people claim that the mass murdering of another group is in the name of democracy and a better world, be on guard to the gateway of your mind.

Guns being used by good folks or bad - you decide which is which - are a sign of a diseased culture and maybe a diseased planet.  We somehow delude ourselves that we are smugly on the right side of issues and that the bad guys and gals are on the wrong side and are criminals.

The truth is that we are no more than raw energy:  ashes to ashes, dust to dust.  The healthy parts of our bodies are not, in the long haul, protected from a malignancy in the liver.  On a macrocosmic level, gated communities of affluent folks cannot feel safe and secure by just urning up their collective noses at the rampant poverty and depravation cancers stewing outside their happy bubbles.

Possibly the crime wave is nothing but
These are quotes tagged with "crime and criminals". You can also search for quotes containing the word crime and criminals.

"Stripped of ethical rationalizations and philosophical pretensions, a crime is anything that a group in power chooses to prohibit." ~Freda Adler~
Perhaps if we looked at crime in such a manner, then there would be far fewer criminals to track down and far fewer people walking around in a paranoic state looking to arm themselves from enemies that do not or need not exist.
Many people - myself included -  love Randy's recent rants because they are provocative and eloquent.  But these issues are raw and rationality is not what is needed.  It is deep understanding of the causes of violence and crime.  It's much bigger than entertainers and wayward sports figures making woeful choices.

        1. @sushitune @WDavidCz Yes the UK has a relatively low rate of gun homicides, but very high crime rate including theft, murder and violence. You just stated that the USA gov was the biggest genocidal nation on Earth!! My point exactly. I do not support any act of war from governments. I support armed citizens that will not let anyone get away with genocide at home or abroad. Just do a quick wiki search on Mao and Stalin and the number gets to around 100m then look up all the other dictators. Switzerland has an assault rifle in almost every home and they are not out killing each other and they have one of the lowest crime rates in the world. If all the Jews had been armed do you think Hitler could have rounded them up so quickly? Or that the 70+m who died under Mao would have put up with his policies that caused mass starvation? Tyrants want a weak population, great leaders want the people to be strong and resist tyranny.

        2. @WDavidCz  @sushitune  @WDavidCz We need to be armed with ideas that are bullet-proof against the emotional pleas of would-be dictators and self-serving governments.  Yes, that may sound naive and impractical, but the seeds of a new, non-violent paradigm are ready to germinate amongst the chaotic world we find ourselves in.

What weapons do we have against pure evil?  Our minds and the energy they project.  That's it.  There is no Hitler in you and me, David.  Thus, we are incapable on an individual level of protecting ourselves from the Hitlers and Stalins of the world with assault weapons in each home.  We are inca[pable of genocidal insanity.

That incapability is both a blessing and a burden.  By what we see, we should each arm ourselves to thew gills and prepare for doomsday.  But ask any inventor or innovator what he believes, and he will say or unconsiously think:

"Some people see things as they are and say why. I dream things that never were and say why not?"  ~George Bernard Shaw~

Everything is not as it appears, and we should not base our actions solely on our inaccurate emotions fueled by fear, desperation and want.

        3. @sushitune @WDavidCz Totally agree that we need new ideas of peace and prosperity. Also to take individual responsibility to stop being entertained by movies and games based on hate, violence and murder. You can tell by the most successful movies that the majority love violence and until that changes there will be desire for war, invasions and force. The majority also believe that theft is good so long as it is for a good purpose and that they have a right to use force to make others adopt their views.
Ideas on a personal level will not help if the majority support violence and decide to support a system of tyranny. The Jews did not die because they had weak ideas it was just that they were unarmed and the tyrants had evil ideas. People who have weapons for self defence only and work towards spreading their ideas are in the safest position. We must never let anyone get away with pre emptive violence at home or abroad and the best way to prevent it is from a position of strength.

    2. @RichardPosner Well, Japanese and American history differs a lot. I havenť heard about Japanese settlers commiting genocide to gain the territory of Japan while America was taken by force from Indians who died in millions. So obviously there is a different mindset in both cultures.

  28. While I certainly don't believe we should demonize athletes and other entertainers when their lives go south, guns and the Second Ammendment are long overdue for serious discussion.

  29. Randy your take on this is one of the reasons I have the deepest respect for and love you!!!! Judgemental NEVER works, and actually that tells more about the person being judgemental, than it does about the one being judged. We are here on planet earth together, and I think there is a reason we are - to learn from eachother and develop personally from that! Actually it's a GREAT opportunity we have here together for doing and making something magnificant - And I believe in the good in most human beings. As you say we can make mistakes, and sometimes fatal mistakes. And some VERY FEW are just pure evil, and will be nomatter what. Fortunately most are awesome human beings and we grow and give most by forgiving - who doesn't need forgiveness sometimes?
And one other point - who knows what is the truth when it comes to media.
Thank's for this GREAT article!!!!! I'll definately share it.
    LOVE to you from Denmark

  36. You know that by now I'm using your piece to initiate a different conversation and attaching it to everything I have. I invite everyone to do the same. We cannot keep having the same debate that ends in even further division. While Deepak tweeted that he was going to be away from social media out of respect for the families, you, Randy Gage, along with me and a couple of other Light workers are choosing to go against the grain and have a different conversation. Let's do some trailblazzing, my friends!

  38. The amount of pain that had to exist within the young man who initiated an event this tragic is what needs to be 'attacked' and destroyed - not the shooter, not the weapon, not the availability of the weapon, but the sadness, the lack of self-worth and the hopelessness that plagues so many and leads to such a loss of clarity that this type of thing becomes possible.

  40. Okay, I like your sentiments Randy in the "Not So Fast" post. It was also very well written, BTW. However, forgiveness for some of these events take time. Forgiveness takes time, grieving takes time, and anger is a part of grief. Acknowledging sorrow and pain are a part of the process. Empathy is very important, and even for those that were victimized by these tragedies, they will eventually have to find empathy and forgiveness. But, let them have their anger too, okay.

  42. I have to disagree on this. While we may not know the pain and feelings of self worth this person went through, there are still so many people that overcome the hopelessness they have lived and do better. While we all do stupid stuff that we may regret, when it leads to taking innocent young lives, you don't get an out! You don't get an "awww you poor misguided soul... ". He made a conscientious decision to walk into that school and end lives. It wasn't an accident, there was no no "ooops, probably shouldn't have done that" about it. So, yes we should be concerned about what is going on with our society and youth but there is no out. Own up!

  44. What if those were ur children and loved ones you immature inconsiderate farthest thing from what true lightworkers are. Going against the grain. Of course randy would like something or some post that was in total compliance with him. Making yourself available that way on a day and week of tragics is not only cynical its obtrusive. The post is written well yes, but let's get to the point of ones reasoning behind the post and see what true lightworkers do and live. Trailblaze. What kind of lightworker friends do you have. What kind of a conversation would you be having if that was a loved one? Debate? How about we debate you? There is a reason Deepak and many of us true lightworkers heed and you would all do well to follow suit or do things privately or stay off of social media when it comes to topics and moments like these. God bless ignorance and God help us all!

Get a room and let the rest of us enjoy what these pages are "supposed" to be about instead of trying to figure out what the hell is going on all the time bcuz women don't know how to respect mens pages appropiately.

  50. That goes as well as the person who is operating these pages to take ownership as well. And if we are all on a true path of prosperity one would think one would know how to be handling that minds perception but of course she won't be blocked or put on limited options like we've watched you do to someone else. Reality is what reality looks at in the mirror. What kind of reflection are you seeing and sending out? Be of one accord just be mindul what accord, mind, and prosperity mind awareness and path one truly is or is not taking. If everything is about prosperity mind awareness then everything is about God then we all need even more help than a second ago. I am sorry Randy, but honestly where's the depth in that. Have a great night.

  52. Mr. Gage. I must say your blog is well written, but my husband and I have been following you for quite some time as he is a subsriber on your other page. And I have to say I too have a hard time sometimes watching these women. What we do not understand Mr Gage is that Marc fella made some very interesting aspects and calls on some true morality and respect issues and areas. 54. @RichardPosner Well, Japanese and American history differs a lot. I havenť heard about Japanese settlers commiting genocide to gain the territory of Japan while America was taken by force from Indians who died in millions. So obviously there is a different mindset in both cultures.

      Thank you.
