Money Jealousy

Posted By: Randy GageApril 8, 2012

The last couple posts we’ve looked at some situations to reveal if you have negative programming about money that could be causing you to sabotage yourself.  Let’s look at some more…

Most people fly economy class.  If you do, how do you feel when you get on the plane and see the people sitting in those bigger seats in Business or First Class?

Situation number two:  You’re driving to work and you see a Bentley with a flat tire or a Ferrari  that hit a telephone pole.  What exactly are you thinking and feeling when you see that?

Be honest with yourself.  Because if you feel resentment or jealousy, that gives a clue that you don’t like wealthy people.  And it’s highly unlikely that you’ll let yourself become something you don't like.  And of course money is energy.  And energy can be attracted or repelled.

Thoughts…

  1. I love this series as well.  I have a question for which maybe you can offer some advice.

Richard and I are done with economy class.  We are at the point where every time we have to fly economy we feel that we are in a can of sardines and we hate every minute.  We have a lot of trips scheduled for this year and as of now it would be too much of a stretch financially to book first class tickets for all these trips.  We have found that purchasing first class up front can be VERY expensive, but if we upgrade on the day of the flight we can save a ton of money.  The strong downside of that is there is not always upgrades available.  Any advice on the best way to transition between economy and first class when we're almost, but not quite there yet?

Love all your posts Randy and really appreciate everything you do for all of us!
    Hugs,
    Lynn & Richard

    1.  @lynnhuber Great question!  When I started out, I hated flying coach so much and I used that for fuel to drive me.  The other thing I did was work the frequent flier programs.  You need to stay loyal to one airline and have one backup.  The sooner you get to elite levels, the sooner you can start counting on upgrades.  -RG

  3. Well the knee jerk reaction to the Bentley with a flat tire or wrecked Ferrari might be "See..that's what having all that money got you!".. But what I KNOW is true is that people are people regardless of how much money they have. And since I live in one of the MOST affluent areas in the entire state of CA, I'm accustomed to seeing Ferrari's galore, Bentley's, $30 million homes, etc. And yes, I am jealous of those with money.

So how did YOU get over this deep seeded belief Randy? If you're aware of it and can talk about it, you had the belief at one point too, yes?

  5. I was at a seminar once and the speaker said "my Porsche got a huge scratch on it..." the crowd groaned ohh noo.." and he laughed and said, "You see that.. it's a car... not that big a deal..."
I don't feel the slightest envy, jealousy, etc about the McMansions, cars, first class etc.. I know what makes me happy: fine meal, fine wine, nice company and my health and hey... I'm there... not knocking if that other stuff floats your boat.. but I think the world would be a lot better off if people were happy with less...

    1.  @napadavid people are created to dominate things and they show this by having things..bottom line is it takes money to live the way you want to live and control your own destiny

  7. On one of your posts Randy, (I think it was a video), you showed your 1st class cabin on your flight. I loved that video so I showed it to my kids, then aged around 12 and 7. I told them that this is what the cabins look like right at the front of the plane and that when they are older we're going to fly up front where we can have lots of different food, play games, have wifi and basically do all sorts of stuff they couldn't do in the back. (And get the whole can of coke - lol). They were amazed and very excited. They even went onto Google to look at the layout of a 747 which got them even more excited. Some days later the kids mentioned that someone had asked them why I was showing them 1st class on a plane and why I was filling their heads with "that garbage." you should have seen the disappointment in their eyes. Its as if that person stole their Christmas gifts. I had to laugh though.
Every time we see a jet in the sky I remind them of the video and they get excited all over again. Their dreams (and mine) are sacred so I remind them of that whenever possible.Re the Bentley. I don't drive a Bentley but my vehicle comes with 24hr roadside assistance so I guess the Bentley does too. They would be up and running again in no time so no problem there. The Ferrari around a pole? So long as nobody was hurt then they're more than likely insured, wouldn't you think, so no big deal. Tomorrow is a new Ferrari. ;)PS: For my annual trip to the USA in 2013 I am arranging to fly 1st class, with the kids. It's going to be a lot of fun.PPS: I hope you had a great Easter.

    1.  @tonyscarcia Thanks Tony, you put RG's post in context. I am sure your kids be really excited to fly next year with you. And gosh they'd love you for that.

  8. Wow great post.  Explains a lot of the self sabotaging I see people do.  One thing that people have to be careful - envy is awful close to jealousy.  Envy does no one good.  Only when we realize that we have every right to drive whatever, fly where ever or have whatever other people have (and it really means nothing) can we be truly successful.

    1.  @Mike Martel How do you suggest we deal with these emotions? Our egos can be wonderful, powerful things, but sometimes they have a tendency to make us feel small or we over inflate them when we should be humbler and listen.

      1.  @ThomasMrak If you are spiritual, that puts it into perspective.  Our place in the world put against God.  If not, the idea that the world does not revolve around us is a great way to view things.

  10. I've flown first class before. Worth the extra money. Will say that two thoughts ran through my head when I saw the Bentley thing:Sucks to be that guy, but shortly afterwards, it's unfortunate that another human being has met misfortune along the road. Hope they are alright. @Mike Martel  It is sometimes very hard not to be envious of others who have more or are more successful. I sometimes wonder "why is is this person more deserving than I am? Is my life going to get any better?am I going to really live up to the predictions that exist for most of my generation? i.e. My generation making less than my parents' generation.I do think more positively now, but sometimes it is really easy to slip. I'm doing my best to have faith. It's scary to have faith in yourself and what you are doing, especially when the world is so unpredictable these days.I asked the folks at Unity on the Bay in Miami to pray for my success and prosperity as I pursue my interest in music. It's taking a huge leap of faith, as I'm in the middle of nowhere in Minnesota, and I'm 30 now. lolLuckily we have technology to overcome a lot of limitations.

  13. I don't have money envy at all. People I know who have lots of moolah worked their ass off to get it and I respect that. Money is a great tool to experience life the way that you want to. It is neutral at its core and is neither positive or negative.

  15. I know people who make a lot more money then me and they are the kind of people who are jealous to people who have more money then them. How is that possible ?? Because i like millionaires ... they do not ...

  18. Never been jealous or envious.  I just question why them and not me or my husband who worked hard and usually two jobs throughout our marriage while I raised our children.  And then I realize though I believe all things can be manifested, I live with a man who does not.  Since he's chronically Ill (I believe a direct reflection of his ill thinking), I'm in for the long haul and attempting to manifest happiness, joy, peace and prosperity in spite of it all.  It's a tough challenge but it brought me here so I must be on the right track.  Thank you!

  20. I'm usually thinking, "I wonder what they did to get where they are in their finances?" If I'm feeling gutsy, I'll ask. 😀 (That doesn't happen as often as I'd like for it to though)  I'm not a jealous or envious type of person. Mainly because I don't know what the person had to endure to get what they have, or what they're doing to keep whatever it is they have. I use the breadcrumbs that success leaves and make adjustments to my own journey to success. I'm blessed to have made a connection with a multi-millionaire whose teaching me through his actions that success doesn't have to be obtained being a jerk or a creep. I'm grateful for the example and lessons he's providing me with.

  22. One of the most pervasive memes I keep hearing from people is to get rich you've had to have been less than honest. When they talk about a rich person they immediately assume they got that way by not dealing straight or being fair with people. I don't often hear people saying things like "Gee, I bet that person got rich by providing value and service to others in an ethical manner." Whenever I see a Bentley or a Ferrari the first thing I ask myself is : " What did they do to make all that money?" meaning what type of business were they in.

  30. Hi Randy,
The concept of money jealousy came to my mind the other day when my mum and I were talking about why quite a few big lottery winners lose it all - because we each have an amount of money that we are comfortable having. Anything more than that, we are uncomfortable. We feel like we don't deserve it, because well, that would make us rich, and rich people are greedy and bad. So we subconsciously reject that money. If you're interested, I wrote about it here http://bit.ly/Hwatwo
About the car, I thought "I hope no-one got hurt!"
The first & business class seats just remind me why I need to work hard, so I can enjoy all those perks! It makes a huge difference to round-the-world travel! I think "in a few years, that will be me" 🙂

  32. RG,
Just discovered you. You are such an inspiration.

As a blogger that writes about the good, bad and ugly in Nigeria, Africa....it's pretty tough to stay sane, let alone positive in this society. Unfortunately, corruption is 2nd nature, not to say there aren't many many hard workers.

Ever since I read the "power of positive thinking" in the 70s, my life has never been the same, so I am viewed as odd with my positive stance. Not that I care RG!

On 1st class, I love it and mentally have my seat no. On the crashed Bentley, my heart would immediately go to the driver, hoping S/he is ok.

  34. I do notice the jealousy I have on the wealthy. I am noticing it, and making that change by celebrating when I met someone rich, or when a friend closes a big deal.

  36. "Reverse Snobbery" is a very real thing. Ideally, one should only worry about their own financial situation and not begrudge others theirs, if only because one doesn't have all the information. It is all too easy to make excuses about people being born with a silver spoon, so the lament about your own lack of wealth can be considered out of your own control.

    17.  @Mike Martel How do you suggest we deal with these emotions? Our egos can be wonderful, powerful things, but sometimes they have a tendency to make us feel small or we over inflate them when we should be humbler and listen.

    24.  @ThomasMrak If you are spiritual, that puts it into perspective.  Our place in the world put against God.  If not, the idea that the world does not revolve around us is a great way to view things.

    25.  @napadavid people are created to dominate things and they show this by having things..bottom line is it takes money to live the way you want to live and control your own destiny

    30. Hi Randy,
The concept of money jealousy came to my mind the other day when my mum and I were talking about why quite a few big lottery winners lose it all - because we each have an amount of money that we are comfortable having.
