Mental Aerobics

Posted By: Randy GageApril 10, 2009

Ok it’s a lazy Friday and I’m not up to writing a long lesson for you today.  But let’s stimulate your brain cells and shake off the dust anyway. Here is your new Mental Aerobics challenge:

Lisa has twice as many sisters as she has brothers.  Her brother Samuel has five more sisters than he has brothers.  How many boys and girls are in the immediate family?  Here’s a hint to keep you from infinite variables:  There are not more than ten children total.

Think you know?  Be the first to post the answer below and you could win $250,000, a night of hot steamy sex with me, or else a footnote at the bottom of the post.  Unfortunately, I get to choose the prize!  Hit me with your best shot.

  1. Samuel has 2 brothers and 7 sisters (7-2=5)
Lisa has 3 brothers and 6 sisters (3*2=6)

That makes 10 "children" total (2+7+1=10) or (3+6+1=10)

But of course, we cannot forget the mother and the father. Which gives us a total of 12 people in the immediate family. 4 boys and 8 girls.

  2. Hello Mr Gage,
I am becoming concerned for your reputation if you keep promising nights of hot steamy sex without delivering.

The word "tease" comes to mind...

Enjoy your weekend and may we all have at least one night of hot steamy sex (even if it 'sadly' it is not with you 😉 ) within the next 48 hours.

I wish every one a Happy Passover and Joyfilled Easter.
    Jeanne

  3. Now -I know that a night of hot steamy sex would never happen... though I could cope with a night alone in your jacuzzi looking at the stars, lit up by candles... thanking you for my $250k 🙂

    7 girls, and 3 boys.

    tee hee

  4. 27 brothers, 12 sisters, 5.75 half brothers, 6 orangutans, 8 nit wits and I'm hetero so hold the steamy sex, LOL..

  5. Morning everyone! 😀 (07:00 here in The Netherlands)

Here are the results of my ponderings.

Most people that do regular calculations based upon logic, reach the conclusion that, as already described in several answers above, there are 7 sisters and 3 brothers, making a total of 10 altogether.

    All fine and well? Perhaps...

As far as I see it, the answer may not be as easy to find as on first impressions one might think. Although seemingly straight forward, the exercise harbours several ambiguities that can show you a lot about yourself, your frame of reference, your line of thinking, your limiting beliefs and your conditioning.

This answer of 10, you will find, is based upon assumptions that are conditioned by strong cultural influences. They may seem to be axiomatic in nature, but when looked at it with an open mind and reviewed from different standpoints, it is clear that they are assumptions nonetheless.

For instance: what is your definition of "family"? For some it is comprised of people that are their direct 1st degree blood-relatives. For others, it could be whom they grew up with and yet for others still it could mean those that are closest them. Examples?
Sure, how about these: foster families; blood brothers; certain groups in organised crime. I mean, look at Robert Kiyosaki for example. The man has two fathers! What does that say about the rest of his 'family'? *grin*

And this is just the beginning...!

Brothers and siters are terms used widely and very often it is not to describe siblings. A little vague? Another example?
    "Yo Bro!"
The term "brothers in the hood" means something completely different to an historian that researches the lives of medieval monks, than to a police officer.
Clear enough? How about this one:
Check out this record of Aretha Franklin & The Eurythmics: "Sisters are doing it for themselves".

That's not even mentioning things like convents & monastries, the military (brothers in arms who, by regulations of modern society can be women), XXX movies (yes, yes, I know... but I admit watching them) or secret societies.

If you dig a little deeper, certain names for certain family ties and functions can even be cause for hilarious moments; Blackadder is a fine example. In this scene his father, the King, made him Archbishop of Canterbury, head of the English Church. They meet and greet a little after: Blackadder kneels before his father, the king. "Father", he says. "My son", the king replies. Then the king kneels while the bishop stands. "Father", the king says to his son, whereupon the Archbishop makes a blessing sign and answers "Father!"
    Confused about all this?
Why this long explanation that may look ludicrous to some of you? If anything, it is to show you that if you look at something from different angles, the picture changes.

Yes, maybe I think a little too much...

But then again, I see the majority of people not think enough and when they do, it is usually something that binds them, scares them -makes them uneasy at least- or limits them.

All I wanted to show you is that there are more than two sides of the coin and perhaps (for example with the British 2 Pound coin) the side most overlooked is the most important one. In this case, there is a phrase etched on the rim. It says:"Standing on shoulders of Giants..."
So, approach difficulties from many different sides and they become a lot more transparent. As a result, it will be much easier to find a solution. Think lateral & literal (great fun, try it!)as well as lineair and as you learn to think in options and possibilities, any problem that you thought you had automatically turns into a solvable and manageable thing.

A challenge indeed and infinitely more rewarding than the negative alternative.

And Randy: thanks for being such a Giant. I'm both pleased and proud to stand on your shoulders.
That night of hot steamy sex may not be an option, but I strive to give my best shot at all times. Whether I hit the target is quite often not even relevant, in particular if you have a multi-dimensional view that makes you realise that most is learned by experience and by mistake(s).
    And mistakes?
    I've made a few.
    But then again...
    Too many to mention.

    Namaste,

    Peter

(Bligh me, 8 o'clock already! And those that read the whole thing and found it boring or uncomprehensive: you had a choice. You always have a choice. And then you decide. Even if this realisation is the only thing you got out of it, I am happy. Unlock your mind, open your mental gates and free yourself of that what holds you back.)

  6. five girls and two boys make up the total number of siblings in that steamy family.
The humidity at this time of the year in Colombo is somewhat suffocatingly steamy too. Cheers, Wyvill

  7. Two possibilites:
7 girls and 3 boys or
    5 girls and 2 boys

both stay in the frame of 10

    Happy lazy weekend!

  8. My brain is not working and I am going Easter Egg hunting with my grandson. Isn't amazing when you put a number in people assume there must be 10 all up not saying there wrong, just that maybe they have been programmed to think 10. Anyway good luck guys and I wish you all a happy, safe and loving Easter.

  9. ANSWER BELOW:

This challenge was a good one to rattle your thinking patterns and get some creative thinking going on. The correct answer is...

There are three boys and seven girls. Lisa has six sisters and three brothers. And each brother has two brothers and seven sisters. Looks like Bozena got it first, so you win...

    This amazing footnote!

  11. 7 Girls and 3 Brothers, to make your decision easier, scratch out the steamy sex, and decide towards the other two.
