Learning from Adversity

Posted By: Randy GageSeptember 23, 2011

Here’s a fascinating, but little known fact about success.  For most people, your success is going to be in exact proportion to how much defeat and failure you have already experienced.

Here’s the catch…

This is only true when you have used any setbacks as learning experiences, and made the necessary changes to break through.  If you haven’t, the universe sends you the same lesson again.  If you have, you move on to your next breakthrough.

Ain’t it great!

  1. It looks like I have a learning problem, because I am receiving the same lesson again and again. With the same results.

  2. So Randy...
I know the lessons keep coming until we master the issue, but it's more complicated than a simple - learn it and move on scenario.

I've found that early conditioning of values is a tough one to overcome to allow a different outcome -

How would you deal with that?

    1. It is easy to feel defeated, especially when you are fighting against negative values you learned from authority or internalized due to life experiences.

I suggest you continue to work on yourself and pursue what you value.

It isn't easy sometimes, especially when you face uncertainty, lack the proper resources or support.

I'm pursuing my interest in music at age 30.

There are a lot of doubters, even people who are downright mean-spirited towards me, and people who think that I'm crazy.

They're probably right to a degree, but for some reason, I have faith that I can do it.

After all, Susan Boyle succeeded in her 50s, and Cheryl Crow didn't release her first album until 31. I can name others.

I can provide value by providing other musicians with resources to help them succeed while I push myself to create music that people want to pay for.

The way I see it, I can serve as inspiration for those who wish to do what is important to them, but couldn't or didn't for whatever reason.

Someone needs to send the message that artistic success doesn't just come to people under the age of 25, and that you passions are worth pursuing.

    2. Terri, values are created by your beliefs. So examine those and replace the ones that no longer serve you. (And you'll find this months virtual seminar "Faith It 'til You Make It" very helpful!)

  3. Great thought here Randy. Adversity is definitely a tool that can help us get stronger and move forward. We use adversity as a way to learn, not to get stuck in a slump. 😀 Keep it up! 😀

  4. Hi RG,

Obstacles are stepping stones; their function is to move us higher.

Each setback is a push forward...if you believe it. If not, you suffer through the same setbacks over and over.

    Thanks for sharing!

  5. obstacles are an opportunity for one to realise there is an inner strength in us to ride over the wave.Only when obstacles arise does one then know how much you want to succeed in your goal.

  6. I see Ryan Biddulph comments on your blog a lot.I checked out Ryan's website. He makes money with a Ponzi scheme called "The peoples programme".Check it out Randy. It's not right to exploit people like that.

  7. "Once you get the lesson, you don't need the experience anymore" ~ Joe Vitale, so true!

When we create self images that are congruent with our goals, we are congruent. Create MORE MIND, become subconsciously conscious!

ie: Become the kind of person that can lead a team, or earn so much a month, or whatever your goal is; "assume the consciousness of the person that has done what you want to do"

  8. This year is a setback year for me. Many of them, businesses fail, team broken up, lost money etc. Each time I learned new experiences, gain new lessons, achieve great breakthroughs.

I become stronger and wiser from he setbacks. Now it's time to fly!

  9. Adversity is definitely a tool that can help us get stronger and move
