Know Your Ignorance

Posted By: Randy GageMay 30, 2018

Not sure why, but in our society today, people typically try to make it appear they have an answer for something, even when they’re completely ignorant on the subject.  I believe it’s because they have fallen prey to the false meme that successful people have all the answers.  But nothing could be further from the truth...

Intelligent people know they have blind spots and confirmation bias.  And they have a much better understanding of what they don’t know.  They know that to make the best decisions, they should never approach the situation as though they alone possess the best answers.  They understand that to admit ignorance of a subject is never ignorant; it’s smart and the mark of an intelligent, rational, and wise person.

Don’t seek to be “right.”  Seek to learn more, so you can take the better action.  The action that takes you closer to becoming the best version of yourself.

In just about any area, here is a fundamental truth: You can’t look good and get better at the same time.

So how you doing on that?

  1. Zen Buddhism calls this having an open mind which is free from views and opinions. I place huge value on the 'don't know' mind, or the beginners mind as it is called. When we free ourselves from our viewpoints we are then open to learn, because how can we learn anything if we think we know already - our need to be right will keep us exactly where we are. It is quite amazing how clear sighted we can be if we can let go of what we think we kno

  2. So true... detach from your ego and humble yourself that you don't have to be right all the time.
