It Is All About Your Smile

Posted By: Randy GageApril 26, 2011

We’ve had a great series on the importance of health to your prosperity.  Before we move on, there’s one more topic to look at…

Dental care.

This has a bigger role in people’s health than many realize.  And a bigger role in prosperity that many realize as well.

You mouth and teeth are how you take in food and get your nourishment.  And plaque, abscess teeth, or gum disease can create more serious health problems down the road.  There is a growing body of evidence that gum disease actually leads to cardiovascular disease.

Cavities are actual decay in your teeth.  And what do you think having decaying teeth in your mouth is doing for your health?  Or your breath?

And as mentioned, it isn’t just for health.  Having a great smile is important for prosperity and happiness.  If you’re self-conscious about your teeth, you’ll probably resist smiling a lot.

Long time readers know I hate debt and advise against it.  But one area I would recommend this is dental care.  If you have missing, chipped, or discolored teeth, gaps or other issues that make you self-conscious, work out a payment plan and get it taken care of.  You’ll prevent serious health challenges later on, and you’ll be more confident in your day-to-day interactions.   Likewise, if you need braces, get it done.  They’re not just for kids.

Now why don’t more people take care of their teeth?

Because they’ve been to a bad dentist and are afraid of the pain!  I know.  I had a dreadful dentist as a child and carried that fear into adulthood.  And I needed a lot of work!  It’s all mental, I know.  I have a very high pain tolerance.  I played softball with a fractured wrist, won a tournament by hitting a home run with a broken finger, and picked myself up off the road when I was shot.  But put me in a dentist chair and I am a coward!

Today there is no reason to fear going to the dentist.  Dental care has advanced greatly.  And if you’re a wimp like me, you can use nitrous oxide, or even sedation.

When I moved to Miami I found a wonderful dentist named Dr. Larry Grillo.  He also has a couple excellent colleagues working with him and they do preventative, regular and cosmetic dentistry.  You can get ahold of their practice, Aventura Dental Arts at (305) 682-1414 or http://www.aventuradentalarts.com/

For my braces he sent me to Dr. Richard Mariani, who runs a great orthodontic practice and did a wonderful job.  Find him at http://www.marianiorthodontics.com/about.swf or call (305) 665-2402.

When I needed an implant and corrective jaw surgery, I went to Doctors Holmes and Sclar who practice at http://www.southfloridaoms.com/index.html

Have a great dentist where you live?  Please share their info below.

  1. Hi RG,

    More great stuff here.

Only enlightened souls and the very self-assured could care less if they're missing teeth. Having a nice set of chompers helps to improve your self-confidence and overall health. It's difficult to enjoy your good when your teeth in poor condition too, and most of us love to eat.

    Thanks for sharing Randy!

  2. Soon you'll be seeing me with braces... I honestly think I have the best dentist in the world - Mohammed Amir has clients like Frank Bruno and Jon Bon Jovi.

He believes that each tooth is aligned with meridian lines... So removal of teeth affect your health... He says that perfect health comes from perfect alignment, effective positioning, proper breathing...

I've met people in the waiting room who haven't worked for years, and can live a normal life, and clients with severe back ache that he cured with a mouth brace.

Here's an article where he's cured migraines, MS, and mental illness:

He's in London - tho has clients that fly from the US, Australia, South Africa, Ireland, and all over Europe to see him.

    1. PS- tell him I sent you if you fly in to see him.

He's also helped cure IBS, colitis, and yuupie flu. Having seen him for over 10 years I've met many of the clients who's lives he's changed through changing the jaw!

  3. I absolutely have a great dentist to recommend in Toronto! He is a complete perfectionist, which with cosmetic work is a very good thing! He is another dentist that people fly in from all over to see. His name is Dr. Mark Kochman, and you can find him at http://www.nu-mouth.com.

  4. Randy,

    Thanks for your post!

I am a dentist. Many of us dentists help our anxious and fearful patients with the help of sedation. When looking for a dentist who provides sedation, we are not all alike.

Look for a dentist who holds a Sedation Permit from your State. This means they have aditional training to best help you.

  14. Hi fellow bloggers,
I'm not going to be on the site for a while. I am checking another memory off my bucket list. I'll be in Paris for a month and have promised myself that I will step away from every known internet devise. Looking forward to enjoying the food, shopping and culture. I'm sure the world won't miss me and I share this with you in hopes that you can all learn to shut off from the norm sometimes. I've learned it's in the quiet times that you grow the most.

  15. i love the dentist... since i was a kid.. strange but true. but one thing i hate is when i get them cleaned... lol.. it is fun to smile =0)

  16. Having amalgam (silver) fillings is like having a weak battery in your mouth (each one contains a blend of alloys, plus you have the saliva so you get a galvanic current). Even gold fillings should be avoided for this reason. It creates an immunological response, so this is not good for your health. The amalgams also contain and release mercury. I had my last four amalgam fillings replaced about three years ago. My dentist sealed off my mouth with plastic and gave me an oxygen mask. The stuff is really toxic! I've heard that the composite resin fillings most commonly used to replace them contain BPA, which has been getting a lot of bad press of late. I believe that all porcelain (not porcelain over metal) fillings are the way to go as they're most bio-compatible. A good dentist will also likely suggest that all of your teeth can fit in your mouth - they don't require extraction. Most people just need to have their teeth re-positioned. This also assists with spinal/cranial and breathing problems that others have already mentioned. Unfortunately I can't recommend a good dentist at the moment as I've decided it's time for a better one.

    1. Yes I should have mentioned that. If you are over 30 and have old fillings, they probably have mercury in them that is leaking out in your bloodstream. I had all my old ones replaced about 15 years ago.

  17. Randy. Amazing. Yesterday I went to the my dentits to make tooth control. She is a very good one in my area. She is a good prof3essional and has technics about pain tratement. She is Patricia Palacio (02965) 456 802 in Puerto Madryn, Chubut, Argentina. 🙂

  18. Admittedly, the first time I went to the dentist was when I was 24. (There may have been once or twice as a child but I do not recall).

Had massive tooth pain but because I heard the dreadful story from others, I refrained from going myself.

Until it got so bad, so much pain that I had no choice.

I even asked my mommy to come with me 8). Yes, I was a big baby in this case.

I remember sitting in the chair, looking at mommy and having the dentist sticking weird things in my mouth. Wanted to gag, vomit and cause a racket.

But surprisingly, 3 root canals later I was fine. I wasn't even sure what pain people were talking about or why people were scared to go to the dentist (even if I didn't get enough anesthesia and felt the drilling for a moment or two before she gave me more)...

Ever since then, I am a big fan. Goes well with my weight loss 8) and I look good.

Need to get braces or the invisiliner next but I am proud of them...and hey, I am a BIG smiler...

  19. I have had two crowns done by Dr Jerry Stahl. He is now in the process of doing a front tooth implant. He is a great dentist and passionate about his work. He also gives dental classes for new dentist and in two months time is going to Israel to do voluntary dental work for two weeks. If you fear dentist, I can recommend Dr. Jerry

  20. Dental care is one of those aspects which are usually ignored by an average person. Some people do not even care even brushing their teeth on a daily basis. Flossing is also considered to be quite a tedious activity and is neglected by many people.

    1.  @HCG In addition to fear of feeling much pain, the cost of dental treatments is what keeps most people from having their gum and teeth problems cured. For this reasons, they consult specialists only at times of emergency or when the ache they experience becomes uncontrollable.

  24. Great article, Randy; I agree, there's no reason to fear the dentist. My husband has been wanting to get some cosmetic dentistry done, but he has slight dental anxiety. We're trying to find a clinic where he feels comfortable, and has the option of sedation. Hopefully we can find a clinic soon!

  26. Being able to have a great smile really is a great way to ensure that you have a high self esteem. That is something that really sticks out to me when it comes to understanding why healthy teeth are so important. Being able to go to the dentist for me is a great way to see if I'm doing what I need to take care of my teeth. Thank you for sharing. http://www.familydentistingresham.com

  27. I agree that getting chipped or cracked teeth taken care of can give your confidence a huge boost.  One of the first things people notice about someone when they talk is their teeth.  You will give off a much better image if your teeth are well kept.  Maybe I will see a cosmetic dentist soon for some whitening.

  29. I completely agree that your teeth are very important, even when it comes to being confident with yourself! I remember that I was really insecure about my self previous to braces. But now I have no problem flashing my smile at anyone! I haven't had a dentist appointment in a while, and I want to get a check up really soon!

    23. I am sort of person who never compromise for the smile. As it always add charm to one's face. Dental care now-days are the important aspect of life.

    25. My son is going into the military and needs some dental work done before he leaves.  He has never had his wisdom teeth taken out.  How quick is the recovery time for healing from wisdom teeth?  If I recall correctly, he deploys in a month.
