Is Your Vision Helping You or Hurting You?

Posted By: Randy GageJanuary 29, 2019

Last post I shared my formula for self-mastery with you.  To refresh your memory, here it is again:

Mastery comes from confidence.  Confidence comes from achieving goals.  Achieving goals comes from daily habits.  Daily habits are created by the vision you hold.

Every thing that manifests in your life is a result of the vision you have for yourself.  Everything.  One of the common mistakes people make is thinking they don't have a vision.   Au contraire…

Everyone has a vision.

However, there are three types of vision:

  • Positive
  • Neutral
  • Negative

(We’ll take a deeper dive on this in the podcast Wednesday.)

People with a negative vision make statements like:

  • I can’t get a break.
  • My student loans are too big to escape.
  • I don’t have the right degree to compete

People who sleepwalk through their days, keeping their head below the cubicle have a neutral vision.  Their primary goal is to make it through the week without getting fired, so they can binge Netflix over the weekend.

Of course people with a positive vision actually have goals and dreams – and they are proactively working toward achieving them.

Make no mistake.  Each of those is a definite vision and will influence the results the person holding it accomplishes.

That’s why goal setting, dream boards, and activity planning are so important to success.  Each of those things causes you to expand your vision.

And each time, you open the window of your vision a little more, you are much more likely to develop the daily habits for achieving it.

Now you either do this from foolish naïveté, as I did when I stated at age 15 that I would be a millionaire by the time I was 35.  Or from seasoned experience, as Steph Curry s when he launches a 3-pointer and doesn’t even need to watch to know it is going in.

And know what?  Either way works, as long as you believe it.  Now you may be wondering how you transform a neutral or negative vision into a positive one.  First and foremost is your programming:

  • The people you hang with.
  • The podcasts you listen to.
  • The books you read.
  • The ratio of time you spend between education and entertainment.

If you’re watching five to six hours of TV every night, it’s highly unlikely that you’re ever going to believe in a positive vision for yourself.  Likewise if you’re reading the news sites, hanging around with victims, or attending a house of worship that beats you up every week.

You need to be exposed to positive programming, in the form of uplifting stories, positive reinforcement, and spiritual nourishment.  You need people and mediums that inspire you to become the highest possible version of yourself.

The second step will require you to unpack your vision into believable, attainable and compelling goals.  Which is where we’ll pick up on the next post.

Thoughts?
