Inner Compass

Posted By: Randy GageJuly 17, 2012

Here a shocking thing no one else in self-development will tell you:  Your inner compass, the small still voice that guides you, that gut hunch you feel, your innate knowing about something – might be wrong.

Really wrong.

Why?  Because of the programming you’ve been exposed to, which changed your core beliefs about money, love, relationships, marriage, governments and lot of other very important things.  As a result of this, you may have damaged your self-esteem, which then leads to worthiness issues.  Plainly put, on a subconscious level, you don't think you are deserving of health, happiness and prosperity.

So you sabotage yourself.   Only you don't know it, and you don't know why.

Now of course this innate knowing wasn’t always this way.  It started out as being for your highest good.  You were born with it intact, and it is only the things you learned from society that threw it out of whack.

So here’s the most important thing:  Knowing whether or not you can trust your own internal compass.  Thoughts?

  1. Great post, Randy! One of the things that I have used with regards to this is "actively" listening to my thoughts. As this is a difficult thing to do, it has revealed several different subconscious thoughts that were rattling around in my head for years.

One that was a cause to ending my first marriage... After my divorce, I ended up in a relationship with a wonderful woman and we were together for about 4 years, when while driving I was in the process of "actively" listening to my thoughts, a thought that I used to have about my ex-wife rolled in to my consciousness only this time instead of my ex-wife's name in that thought it was my new partners name.

When this happened, I immediately slammed on the brakes and pulled to the side of the road and started crying.

If I had not been "actively" listening to my thoughts I would have never caught that poisoning thought and I know in my heart that my relationship with this wonderful woman would have been doomed.

But I caught it... And as soon as I knew that thought was exposed, I was able to deal with it and it no longer controlled me.

If I have any advice for anyone, if you are struggling with an area in your life, start to listen to your thinking, the subconscious that is sabotaging you will reveal itself at some point BUT you have to be listening for it.

    Thank you again, Randy!!

  3. I agree that self sabotage is a killer and I also believe most of us are SO wrapped up in thoughts from the past that we cant's 'see the forest 'fore the trees'. And the real indication of it, is how much we RESIST change. Many years ago when I was in major inner turmoil I was guided to read Walsh's "Conversations with God, Vol 1".. It was here where I first encountered, "What you resist, persists". I have found that to the degree someone or we ourselves deny we resist, we define just how MUCH we truly DO resist. And like all humans, I resist as well, but acknowledging it is the first step to releasing it.

I also think it's incredibly important we work daily on RELEASING what we KNOW is in the way.We all sabotage ourselves by hanging on to fears, worthiness issues, and as you say, thoughts from the past.  By both welcoming and then releasing these feelings and beliefs, we open the door to change.

I'm deeply grateful for your constant reminders that we are pure, whole and abundant in this moment of Now.

  5. my inner compass? hmm, guess it´s not my guts feeling, isn´t it?
No, when re-reading your post, I notice you talk about an inner voice. Guess mine was never there - lucky me!! 🙂
    - but to be honest: without any voice you don´t really move either 🙂
I should install a speaker and run a new compass-program!!!!!
    Thx. 4 the inside -

  7. Dear Randy, dont mislead people. Inner voice is Divine part of human and can only strive to the good depending on situation - Divine lives only here and now. The one that's wrong is subliminal or unconsiuos, or most frequently, wrong images constantly replayed in the inner visualisation. Most people unaware of. Divine cannot be programmed thought the imagery is constantly the problem.:) good day.

  9. Does not matter what emotion is attached to the internal images. They still create your reality, so better to take care of them. The other part of it - Divine, we cannot control that, and the ways the Divine acts in us, is that small voice, that corrects and directs our thinking process, so our images would be as quality as possible, and our free will not affected.

  11. Wow, Randy, you really touched/hit a very strategic aspect of coaching and self'-coaching that is absolutely critical to making decisions and taking the right actions. I cannot agree with you more, and I use my body as my compass, as Laura Berman teaches in Living Your Best Life, becoming ever more conscious and self-aware now that I am vegan... BUT, since self-development is a work in progress, I would like to know when you can fully trust your inner compass... Thank you & have an Excellent Lifestyle & Life!

  13. I find that the accurate "inner voice of intuition" speaks first, usually as a quiet yet firm statement, such as, "Turn right here," or as an emotional response in the gut. It is usually quite subtle and can be easily ignored if not focused on. Then QUICKLY the cultural/personal/learned voice jumps in, usually with a louder question accompanied by a larger emotional response that plays with the possibilities: "What if I turn left instead?" " What am I missing?" "What will other people think?". Discerning the difference is the key.

  15. Man I'm loving today's post!

I'm thinking I would approach it from a different angle though.

I wouldn't describe it as though our inner guide, has been thrown out of whack by the stimuli of the world. That second to last paragraph would suggest that our inner guide has been effected by the world we live in.

I would suggest a more accurate way to understand it would be that our subconscious mind has been effected by the stimuli of the world and, more importantly, the meaning our we've chosen to give said stimuli.  One thing I know for sure is that it (whatever it is) has no meaning except the meaning I give it. So really it's not even the stimuli as much as it is our beliefs about it.

If I replaced the description "innate knowing" with the description of "God" would the rest of that paragraph still stand? Do you think it (whatever we call it) has really been thrown out of whack or would it be more accurate to say our listening has been thrown out of whack?

Said another way, I don't know if its our innate knowing we need to question as much as our true listening or understanding of what it's trying to reveal.

But I think I do get the point... How do we know when we're really listening to our gut and when we're making it up in our own mind? Hummm....

Very interesting and thought provoking topic today dude. I'm enjoying chewing on this one a lot right now.

  17. yeah, you are right, Randy.

And this is a big issue. A dramatic issue. The most drammatic situation is when you understand your programming is not ideal in somewhere and try to change it by doung some excersises, practicing self-development but after a while it remains the same and you see that nothing has changed. You even may buy somthing new: a new car, new clothes, new house, have new people known with, but your lifestyle does not change. And you hoped that you purchased all that to make change, but then understand that the real reason of your purchases was not the one you thought was the reason. And the real reason has nothing to do with the sphere you wanted to change. It brings us to the understanding that our programming has not changed.

Most of the time you understand that your programming in relationships for example is not the worst, it has some advantages, but has also lots of minuses that keep you away from your dreamlife. It annoys me when I see that my consciosness hasn't changed after I made some excersises thying to change it.

Just my thoughts. Maybe you may help somehow:)

    With respect,
    Levon..

  19. P. S. sometimes you even like your wrong programming because it seems that believing in that brings pleasure and makes less pain. Especially it takes place in sexual life.

  21. Compasses that have been exposed to magnets begin to lose their ability to point true north.  The more they are exposed, and the stronger the magnet, the more wobbly the compass becomes.
We have an inner compass, sure, but sheesh! There's all these blighted magnets in our outer world; how they do wobble us!

    1.  @MrsHealthandProsperity Hi! Info: the Northpole "pole" is not exactly in the middle of  North anymore and it´s falling apart: it´s 4-5 pieces hanging around together with the magnetism of still 1 pole, but it´s not if you look close. True with the strength of magnetism - but us humans, do we have inner magnetism? Or something comparable?
I know we have a low electricity in our brain which sends off impulses and our heart sends off frequences from beating, but magnetism?
..... reminds me more of the law of attraction 😉

      Any IDEAS?

      1.  @MrsHealthandProsperity just stumbled over this article:
Energy travels to the brain via blood vessels in the form of glucose, which is transported across the blood-brain barrier and used to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the main currency of chemical energy within cells. Experiments with both animals and people have confirmed that when neurons in a particular brain region fire, local capillaries dilate to deliver more blood than usual, along with extra glucose and oxygen. This consistent response makes neuroimaging studies possible: functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) depends on the unique magnetic properties of blood flowing to and from firing neurons. Research has also confirmed that once dilated blood vessels deliver extra glucose, brain cells lap it up....

        so, there is magnetism!!
        enjoy the weekend -

Intriguing info, Leeloo!  I didn't know about that aspect of glucose and the brain.  My previous interest has been to do with glucose, diabetes, and the brain. Here's what I know about that:
The brain has a very limited tolerance-range for glucose.  Too little, and it feels kinda' disfunctional; way-way too little, and it goes into physical shock (life-threatening).
Too much glucose (a more common situation, especially for people who O.D. on fariginous foods) makes the brain feel stunned, leading eventually to the all-too-common diabetic coma.
None of which has anything to do with what you were talking about.  Oh well.

  24. Agreed, so then which compass do you look at and follow is the question.
I can understand that the conscious compass is the one that is damaged but I would differ on the inner still compass that is connected to the greater universe that can lead to whole complete fulfillment its just that there is a conflicting views within most people that cannot distinguish the difference between the 2 so they use the one that feels right and in this case it is the one that is damaged.  Your thoughts.

What is it that you do on a daily basis to keep your compass intact and do you look to someone elses compass.

  28. It's important for us to trust ourselves. To question everything we have learned thus far and begin to build new beliefs. First in ourselves. Test your compass by not going with the flow, but going with what that 'still, small, voice inside' is sharing. We must do this daily to build and strengthen our inner core. When we trust ourselves, we're better in all aspects of our life.  Especially relationships.
