How You Learn

Posted By: Randy GageNovember 23, 2012

In Risky Is the New Safe, I talked about the skill of how to think and the education system’s inability to teach this any longer.  Then in a recent post I talked about my conversation with Joe Vitale and how I may have benefited from getting thrown out of school.

And while I do feel that being on my own benefited me and had some fun with that post, I didn’t mean it to come across as me not believing in formal education.  As I stated in the book, there will always be a place for a well-rounded education.  But now and even more so in the future, you will need to take a much more active role in your own learning.  It's not about your teacher's responsibility to teach you - it's about your personal responsibility for your own learning.

You need to bring in the lateral and creative thinking processes where formal education is lacking.  And you need to discount some of the emphasis formal education places on memorizing facts and make sure you are developing your deductive reasoning skills.

So how do you do that?

Personally I love to do Mensa quizzes, Sudoku, word puzzlers, crossword puzzles, etc.  I study contrarian thinkers like Mark Cuban, Steve Jobs, Sir Richard Branson, etc.  And perhaps most importantly, I surround myself with people who challenge me, and people who disagree with me.  (I am simply amazed at how many people only want to talk with people who agree with them!  It’s frightening.)  I’m a Libertarian, so I always make sure to have Liberals and Conservatives at my dinner parties to have a thought-provoking discourse.  I think most organized religions are thinly disguised cults.  So I make sure to have some deeply religious and fundamentalist people to bounce ideas off of.

Twice a year or more, I attend workshops, seminars or conferences where I am not the speaker, but expressly the student.  And I have a Mastermind group of people who are brilliant in areas I am not, so we can create real value for each other.  And I read.  A lot.

So what about you?

What are some of the things you do to further your learning and develop more wisdom?  Please share your thoughts with the community.

  1. I love reading! Right now reading The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson - AWESOME book. Almost finished with The Go-Giver by Bob Burg - one of the most precious books I've ever read, LOVE it. Your books Accept Your Abundance and Prosperity Mind (prefer to have these with me - always gives me food for thought facing chalenges). Create inner peace just BEING in the now. Do A LOT of positive postulating like "No matter what I touch I am successful" or "I can do it" Do a lot of acknowledging my of fellow beings seeing the positive things they DO. Could do more on the puzzle side - I'll work on that. Anyway - I believe that continu doing this daily will create my future and a succesful one too 🙂
Look forward to getting and reading "Risky Is The New Safe".

  3. P.S. to all of you that have told me you got extra copies of "Risky" to give as graduation or holiday gifts to high school and college kids - thank you!  That was one of my visions for the book.

    1. @Randy_Gage I think everyone should give the book a look. I don't always agree with you, but you get me to think.People aren't thinking. They expect someone else to do it, and they chastise the dreamers. Unfortunately, a lot of dreamers give up. I did it for awhile, and sometimes I am tempted to cave in.For some reason, I have faith in what I am doing, even though many people would call me foolish. There's a lot of pressure to conform and do what you're told, and let's be honest, doing something you value isn't easy unless you were born incredibly beautiful or wealthy. There is always some sort of barrier- too old, too young, too little experience, too much experience, too much/too little education, etc. but, people have transcended barriers. Some say it is random chance or luck, but if that were the case what explains the people who were "lucky" that end up in rehab or poor in a few years? If people didn't think or have dreams, humanity would still be living in the trees subsisting on grubs. Sometimes people don't want to help or even sabotage you. They're usually the first to demand something of you if you succeed however.Set the world on fire.-VC

         Hello Thomas!

I was taught by a very wise woman from a very early age that "No one can make me feel inferior without my consent!" She was right. My grandmother came from Poland and taught us that all things are possible if we only "Believe" in the vision not the people. Keep your mind’s eye focused on the vision and all the rest will take care of itself!

As for your statement of, "Sometimes people don't want to help or even sabotage you. They're usually the first to demand something of you if you succeed however". To me the best revenge is success! So go out there and be successful and do not listen to or care about anyone that would have you veer off of the path that leads you to fulfilling your dreams! Only you can make it happen and only you can stop it from happening!

Go set the world on fire Thomas! It is waiting for you!

  5. I fail a lot, get back up, and take a good look at where I was messing up - and how I was choosing to be to have created that. I look at fixed patterns & learn from there. Then I move on & work towards doing better.

  7. I read lots.  Of course I work in a library, so I am surrounded by books all day!  I love it.  Good clarification above Randy. 😉   I like to talk to people that don't think like me either, it is so much more interesting, and enlightening.  You know Randy you talk a lot about being a good learner, and you are maybe that's why you are such a good teacher?

  9. I read a lot too.. like you... like to have different view points...read alternet for the left, reason.com for libertarian, robert ringer for  right wing nut laughs, salon, daily beast, slate, huff post, browser, gawker, jezebel, all great stuff... like to keep up on arts and food and travel stuff.. read Grub street, Conde nast traveller, 7x7 for knowing what's goin on in town.. plus get a bunch of positive blogs like yours, man is the Internet a thing to be grateful for or what??

  11. I challenge myself in trying to understand the source of the dynamics of life. I was deeply connected with or to (?) so called "fate" which was so clear and close that I understood: it wasn´t just FATE to me.
Maybe to others, not to me.
I know the power of thoughts, of wishes underlined by love and if someone shares that with you, he/she takes it over. I think about the thoughts and wishes someone was hiding secretly but then they showed up later. It is weird to notice sometimes. It is interesting to notice a few times.
It is most interesting to understand the power >> to make it a positive game for you to not suffer loss but turn it again into something new and positive or a go-on. I would love to turn fate into positive power. It would be so enriching for us.
This is less about learning but rather about practicing a learning curve.

LEARNING: I read and watch everything with related topics to get the big picture or I read and watch about similar/related parts of a topic to understand connections of the whole thing.
Many people and things are still new to me, even situations, and the more info I gather of them or their topic or life the more secure I get and that keeps me going solid. It is a solid basis for change. In the end, I will and can remain there for good, if I do see the whole picture.
Orientation is a must if you want to survive.
I do not do any word puzzlers at all cuz it´s just single pieces which are never connected with one another topic wise. I always go for topics.

  13. I'm confused by the part where you say : surround yourself with people who challenge you and the people who disagree with you ... You mean the negative ones ??

btw : I like word puzzlers, seminars, books, audio tapes and i search for the right people in my life.

    1. @million dollar People who push you to move forward in life in a positive, loving way. People who won't allow you to settle for mediocrity.

  15. I surround myself with positive minded people who inspire me and also say less and listen more. I also listen to motivational materials, but most important, wisdom is from above. Therefore I ask my Heavenly father for wisdom. The wisdom that passeth all understanding.

  17. Absolutely agree that we need to do way more beyond the SCHOOL system to educate ourselves...  Learning, Playing and Growing needs to be our everyday thought process and expanding our Minds on all levels... and Like you said KEY is the people you surround yourself with, stimulating conversations, and self education thru courses, books, audios etc...

  19. I read everything- Economics, business, history,  cooking, engineering, great works of the western canon, philosophy, humor, physics, technology, world cultures, and high level mathematics I don't understand half of.I'm a musician (for the most part), who wasn't raised to think or lead, but rather to obey others and devote myself to a life as Union laborer without any other real options. Even a Bachelor's degree, which is considered the holy grail and an entrance pass to adulthood, was pushed by the wayside in the name of "learn a trade".I'm an "uneducated moron", and I did poorly in school since it's mostly about doing what you're told and memorizing things, rather than thinking. But, that hasn't stopped people before. :-DBecause I lack a lot of formal education, I'm not deeply entrenched in "the right way", have a superiority complex, believe that people should "know their place" or believe that anyone has a right to decide what someone's future will be at an early age. We've become too obsessed as a society with Social class. When did we require so much for people to have a chance to rise above where they happened to be born? When did we start dividing the world into masters and slaves again?

  23. There's nothing wrong with formal education!  It's just another resource; it's how one uses the resource that makes it valuable..or not.  All experience is filtered through the experiencer; if you don't like your experience, change the filter.
EVERYTHING is my sdource of learning. Books are good. I have stopped reading non-fiction; now I STUDY those books.  Studying new ideas is (for me) WAY diiferent  than just reading!  I also read a LOT of fiction, of all sorts.....with only one caveat: if reading a story will depress me or bring me down, I don't read it.  Call me unrealistic, but I prefer to hang out with up-beat happy folks, especially the ones that I take to bed with me.  In books, I mean!!  Sheesh - I read in bed to relax before sleepy-time.  I like to spend that time with pleasant fictional folk.

  25. I love to read and I went back to school on-line and will be graduating from Ashford University on March 5, 2013 at the age of 47. College has given me extra confidence in myself and knowing that I completed the journey I embarked upon on May of 2009. I finished what I started and will have the reward of another college degree to add to my credentials.

My history teacher (Tom Roka) recently cited my work "Catherine: Your post presents a Libertarian-Jeffersonian vision. This perspective is well complemented by your ability to use historical information and fine writing skills. The end product is excellent work!" This made me the proudest because I have grown as a person and evolved the person that I wanted to become! I love writing and keep sharp by researching projects that make me go "Hummm"!

I agree with your statement of. “I surround myself with people who challenge me, and people who disagree with me". I love a good debate and having more than your own view does keep you sharp and on your toes!

Loved your Book Randy and thank you for investing in me on EmipreAvenue.com!
