How You Get Belief

Posted By: Randy GageAugust 27, 2012

The will to do something is dramatically impacted by your belief that you actually can do something.  No one is very motivated to attempt something they think they’re going to fail at.

And that speaks to the power of belief.

Having won a few championships and played a winless season as well, I can tell you the team that thinks they are beat is beaten.  And an individual who believes they’re beat is beaten.

Now on the other side of the equation, a person who believes they are going to prevail usually does.  The belief they have gives them motivation, inspiration, energy, determination and perseverance – even in the face of daunting obstacles.

So what gives people and teams that belief?

Sometimes it is just naivety.  People don't realize they’re not supposed to make it.   Bill Clinton, James Carvelle and George Stephanopoulos were so green in national politics the didn’t realize the futility of their quest to reach the presidency.  So they made it.  I’ve been on teams that were too stupid to know we were supposed to lose, so we won.

Sometimes it’s confidence based on experience.  If you have made earlier objectives, beaten a team before, or excelled on a world-class level – you build confidence at each step of the process, and that creates belief. I was on a softball team that won 27 games in a row, becoming champion in three straight tournaments.  We just built confidence from the first win and kept growing it.  We won because we expected to.

Sometimes belief is simply programmed into you. It could be in your formative years you are programmed by parents, school, religion or a cult that you are divinely blessed and are here to overcome.  Depending on the source, this could be positive or very negative.

Sometimes we borrow belief from others.  If someone you respect tells you that you’re capable of accomplishing something -- that will sometimes put you over the top in the belief account.  (Which is why I write this blog for you guys every day!)

Finally, sometimes belief simply comes from a leap of faith.  You marshal together ten, 20 or 30 seconds of courage, and you tap into that adrenaline to just go for it, results be damned.  You sell yourself on the belief and burn your ship.  You take away the retreat possibilities, which forces you to be courageous, and you find belief from the fires of your courage.

Thoughts?  What about you?  What are the best ways you harness belief for yourself?  Please share your thoughts with the community.

  1. I think it's a combination of several of the elements you mention for me. First and foremost we must believe in ourselves above anything else. And with this comes the need to release any thoughts we have that do not serve us or our purpose.   I BELIEVE.

Since I hold a vision, it's important to surround yourself with others who either share your vision or simply understand and embrace your goal. I think its equally important we release those in our life who do not understand someone of vision too.

In fact I was just having a talk about this topic with a guy this morning who was a partner in Montgomery Securities here in San Francisco, that the founder/CEO, Tom Wisely. sold for over a billion dollars making him a very wealthy man. Now that's what I call vision!!

  5. Unfortunately belief alone is not enough.  I recently had a very legitimate lawsuit dismissed where I believed without a doubt I was going to win because I was terribly damaged by my Dentist's negligence and yet, a Judge saw to dismiss my case based on some legal loophole and my Attorney being outlawyered.  Now I have filed an appeal and believe strongly in my case but having an uphill battle fighting the powers that be and getting someone who believes in Justice as I do.  I don't want to give up the fight but I may have no choice.

  7. Beliefe grows inside everyone if he takes the adventure of a fulfilling life and masters the challenges within it. It's is so amazing when you start to realize every single and small step on the way that, if you reach the magical tipping-point, you can't stop going on and on and on. Thank you Randy for your guidance and belief that you share with us every day. Best wishes from sunny Austria, Emanuel

  13. This is a good question... I've been sitting here thinking and wondering and then I realized what it was for me. POSITIVE INPUTS! Feeding my mind with powerful, positive and productive energy and ideas, really opened my mind to a new world of possibilities! Possibilities realized through action, but never even attempted without the right thinking!!!

  15. Thank you Randy. This is one of my favorite topics.  I've 'manifested' dreams and wishes in seconds, usually a bit longer and a few huge ones took a couple years. [you've seen the view] The #1 ingredient is NO DOUBT.  For me I have to operate in a place without any. If I have any there is struggle and resistance. If it means I have to study and validate everything said FOR ME to expel all doubt, so be it.  Without doubt, the vision is easy to step into and no naysayers will deter me. Good ideas covered in so called belief butter will not work!  Thanks for being on point.

    1.  @Iceburner1 Thanks for sharing....NO DOUBT..huge! from what I have studied also seems paramount that you not only  believe it but you FEEL it, despite current conditions...I thnk that is the biggest hurdle.........

  19. Randy, I recently found your blog as a result of one of the people I follow on Twitter and I am loving it!  I can attest 100% to the "If you think you can, you can" belief method on a lot of levels, but especially with group sports.  I played a lot when I was younger and always, always made those that spoke disbelief in our abilities to "take it back" and speak victory instead and gave pep talks to the team saying the same..."We WILL Win!"...9 times out of 10...we did.  I've always attributed to the belief that we would!

  21. Randy when I find a goal I want I vizualize every detail. What I am wearing when it happens. The people who will be cheering me on. The acceptance and victory parade.  You will note I said when it takes place.not "if". I can see it in my minds eye.  When I reach the goal I set  am comfortable because  have already been there.
The truth is I do not concern myself with the pathway.  I see the end result.

  23. The best way for me to harness belief for myself is to first identify what I really want and then to surround myself with people who I can learn from in the direction I want to go in.

  25. Good Topic!  I currently (and for decades) have a strong belief in I CAN'T...can't succeed with my business, can't attract strong co-leaders or great customers, etc. etc.  I know that is a strong belief because, well, because of the evidence.  I'm not accomplishing what I SAY I want to accomplish.  Dang!!
I AM, however, in the process of dumping that "I can't" belief, and replacing it with "I can".  I've been in the process for rather a long time, I trust I am getting close to the tipping point; I feeeeel like I am.

Currently, I am studying What to Say When You Talk To Yourself (practicing! practicing!)  Each time a neg. thought arises (based on I can't-ness) I remind myself that it's based on a belief that Does NOT Belong to Me.  It's just a weed seed that I've picked up while passing through the garden of life.  I brush it off.

I'm also doing mirror-work, telling myself every morning that "I believe in myself!  I know I can accomplish my dreams! (etc etc)"  I've got 30 stickers to put on my mirror, one for each day I do my mirror work - love those smiley face rewards that I give myself!
We'll see if I can actually change a long-held belief;  I believe that I can.  Greater Success is MINE.

  27. I think for me it is the last (a leap in faith). I have hired some very successful coaches who are coaching me.  Being on fb has helped too because I am able to collaborative with yourself, big Al Shrieter, Ken  Dunn , Mark Yarnel and other successful net-workers,

    1. @mikecole62 YES! A personal coach is a wonderful way to make things happen. Every successful team has a coach...every successful person needs a coach as well.

  29. Thank you Randy...Wonderful to come to this destination and not only read but FEEL this from you for as one who always believed in themselves..never doubted, just kept moving forward and life has shifted in a very different direction....trying to not get attached to naysayers or your own doubt is huge..especially when little mental distraction exists. And its interesting how many can vanish who you have ALWAYS believed in, when you need that support....staying out of DOUBT is huge...can become very lonely if resort to only being around those who believe in you, but that's a choice...start with loving yourself and your own company, as well as your vision, right?

  32. Randy - something related of which I was just reminded yesterday... "If you have a good Plan A, you don't need a Plan B." Not having a Plan B forces you to do what it takes to make your plan work. This, I think goes hand in hand with 'belief.' Believe (or have confidence in) yourself and in your plan and go for it!

  34. Great post Randy! As always. I'm a new reader of your blog and all I can say is that you blow me away. I mean, all this time, I have this beliefs that didn't even occur to me of questioning. Thank you so much. Everyday, I push my self to go outside my "Box" so I can grow. All in all, I believe in myself to achieve great things in life! Again Thanks!

  36. Rendi, thanks! You always write such words which are most important to the person right now. Held an exit seminar and I saw that at some distributors questions began to arise. Why I already in the company of 2-3-4 years and at me am not present such result, as at Rendi. They speak to me in the first year in Edzhel Rendi earned $150000 and I 4 years, why? On one of the trainings you said that to Edzhel you were engaged in MLM of 18 years and people think, as so much time will be necessary to them. I think that today speeds of life much higher than 5 years ago and if it is correct to distribute the forces, the result will be quicker. What do you think?

  38. Hi Randy,

By detaching from other's opinions I developed my belief system.

For a bit I simply believed in myself is others believed in me. If others lacked faith in me, my belief crumbled.

I practiced detaching from other's viewpoints - through strict meditation - and chose to start believing in me...although of course a push from someone is always nice...not totally detached of course 😉

Doing also built my belief system. I had a tough time developing faith in my blogging skills as a newbie. 1600 posts later, I feel confident blogging.

Same deal with shooting youtube videos. Shaky confidence my first few...900 plus videos later, I churn 'em out by habit, and feel confident in my ability to shoot a helpful video on the fly.

Doing makes believing so much easier. Your faith becomes bolstered with each repetitive act.

    Thanks!

  40. Thanks for your words and inspiration, Randy. I think you are right - confidence based on experience, strong belief in yourself and strengths, belief in God and Divine Wisdom. I also borrowed some belief from you when you were in Sofia. Thanks a lot.

  44. As always, your posts just in time. Belief is similar  than fire - all the time need to throw the  wood,  whether from internal or external resources.
I like the as Ryan said :" Doing makes believing so much easier. Your faith becomes bolstered with each repetitive act."
I use all  your 5 points  Randy, and for an additional one special, which is my secret weapon 🙂
All your stuff-  It all really works. And I even have trouble remembering how I felt 3 years ago. One thing is clear- sense of  happiness is completely equivalent to the belief level. When I have  a strong belief - my eyes are  sparkling,  smile is sincere  and everything in the life is going up.

  46. We ought to look inside and see what our true beliefs are. Look at them objectively and acknowledge if they are going to serve us or not. Then realize it takes the same amount of mental energy to have a limiting belief as it does a positive one. Wake up in the morning and put some prep-for-the-day time aside to input into ourselves a few positive beliefs. Repeat as necessary to work it into the sub-conscious mind as the subconscious mind is not in any way objective.

  48. Thank you Randy, Great and inspiring post today. One of the ways I generate belief is being confident for no reason, not having anything to base it on.

  50. Belief is a queer specimen, and it differs from person to person - as everything else. I think the solution is very simple (maybe not easy). We never grow out of childhood - See to you are well nourished, have had enough sleep and get changed. With these things done every day you can make anything happen and make any belief come through.
I've heard a lot, that the mental part is getting very much underestimated - true it can be like that. But what I think is getting very much underestimated is taking care of your body, getting propper food, enough sleep and move your body.
I've been a smoker for 36 years, and never before been able to stop, all though I tried. Failed every time - untill now. I found out what my body needed to be able to quit. Then I first halfed my abuse without even thinking of it. I was so much in lack of resting my body, so I allowed myself to rest and sleep more than usual. I also read that if you want to become successful you have to go that extra mile - burn the midnight oil - great people become great while others are sleeping - and I thought SHIT, I'm doing it all wrong, never going to make it. But for me following those advices, just made me more weak and NON believing in my own abilities.
Well giving my body what it needed, sleeping and resting more, continuing doing these things listening to my body, totally changed my mood, and by that my beliefs in myself, and to day it's been 3 weeks since I quit smoking - AND I STILL FEEL GOOD about it.
NOW I feel i can BELIEVE - HAVE FAITH - CHANGE - GO THAT EXTRA MILE and so forth 🙂
Thank's Randy for a GREAT article! Hope you never will stop feeding us mentally.
Huge hugs and love from Denmark :)))

Very wise!  Sleep (along with excellent nutrition, clean water, exercise, and love) is a key component of a happy successful life.  I've recently run into that thing about "succeeding while others are sleeping" and likewise, recognized it as a load of codswallop.  It's another one of those "success myths" like balance, me thinks.

      1.  @MrsHealthandProsperity
Thank's 🙂 Yes, you really have to take care of yourself - It's been quite stunning to me how HUGE the body thing is - If someone wóuld have told me, I would not have believed it!
I can see you are doing a lot of the same "work" with yourself as I am! Would LOVE to connect on facebook! Would you mind?
Hugs and love from Denmark 🙂

  52. RG asked "Thoughts?  What about you?  What are the best ways you harness belief for yourself?"

Currently— as in "today"— I'm looking at the source of anything, everything: Where does this/that come from? When I trace this thought, that feeling, this or that action back, and back and down, down, down... what's the essence of it? Who or what is the author, creator?

I'm finding there are two primary sources for all of that in my life. I'm calling them my small-self and my GOD-self.

I've damn destroyed myself, my family, and way too many others with beliefs from my small-self (read ego if you like). So, I'm opening up to beliefs that originate from a infinitely bigger Source, my GOD-self. I'm way too young in this adventure to KNOW the difference all the time— hell even much of the time. But, I've got the willingness & ability, so... Hi ho. Hi ho. It's off to work (on me) I go.

May the Source be with you. (Clever boy < smile >)

    Thanks for askin' RG.

I learned recently to use this phrase:  "I assert the authority of my Higher Self".  When I say that, I'm there.
I like "Higher Self" because it is open-ended.  Yesterday's Higher Self is today's ordinary (lesser) self, which is lifted up to a higher level tomorrow as I assert the authority of my yet Higher Self.  There appears to be no end to increasing-enlightenment.
So be careful of the error of black/white, yes/no, God/not-God, dualistic thinking.  As another friend remarked, "We don't live in an either/or universe, but rather, in an "and" universe.  The lesser-self isn't bad or wrong; it is simply part of the process.

  54. Hey Randy,
The power of belief can bestow you the courage ,the passion ,the motivation ,the perseverance ,the persistency to go on and make anything what is take ,for to get you goal.
The power of belief gives you the big why .When you have the why, you can overcome any how .How someone gets the belief .most of the persons have their  values, moral principles and integrity .When anyone has self   confidence and personal integrity ,he will fight for realization of his beliefs and the principles of life, as he interpret them.

  56. Hi Randy,
You know you are the master believer.  But I am the naive kind. I don't know how to doubt when my instinct tells me to go for it.
When I heard of MLM, I just burnt my ships even without knowing where next. I was right. You did assured me that I was on the right track.
I am looking for the day I will challenge  your record.

    Long live to you.

  58. Naivety - YES! I got a huge portion of that. Being or acting a bit childish, playing with luck like buying a ticket for 10 pennies, with a feeling that if I loose it is no real loss, it won´t hurt ´cuz I entered that "room" with some naivety. It´s quite practical! It doesn´t take much energy.
The strong part is the one you start with your up-grown confidence, I also got  a whole portion of that in my backpack. Confidence is also not energy sucking.
I just couldn´t borrow from others unless it is something or... no: unless it is someone I can pretty much identify with, like I can identify with YOU.
Without identification - no way.  Sorry, it would "feel"unrealistic to me to reach what someone else did reach who has made totally different experiences in life. It would "suck" I guess so I´d turn away from that option/alternative.
    Great post!!! ....just "in time"...
    Thanks Randy -

  62. Bill Clinton and his team won because they didn't think they could lose?  Perhaps, but I think more importantly Bill Clinton was brilliant, the most successful president and presidential candidate I have seen in my lifetime.  I think to minimize his win in '92 by saying in was mostly because they didn't  think they could lose is well, a bit insulting and kinda naive on your part big guy.  Watch "The War Room" if you haven't already.

I believe I would like to have lots of money now,  to help win against the campaigns of ignorance and prejudice that are so prevalent now in our country.

Our beliefs are important, but I am sure one of the hardest tasks to accomplish is eliminating negative beliefs.  I think I'll just keep working on loving myself and the positive beliefs will follow.

By the way, their is nothing positive about telling people who are poor, they are statistically more apt to be a jerk than rich people.  I mean really come on.

  65. Too stupid to know that we will fail, therefore we won. Experience we gain can work against us on these. I heard of stories that famous business people turn away ideas because based on their experiences, these ideas will fail. But eventually it turn out to be a evolutionary ideas that change the world.

      Thanks!

      Thanks Randy!

    43. @mikecole62 YES! A personal coach is a wonderful way to make things happen. Every successful team has a coach...every successful person needs a coach as well.

    54. Hey Randy,
The power of belief can bestow you the courage ,the passion ,the motivation ,the perseverance ,the persistency to go on and make anything what is take ,for to get you goal.

    65. Too stupid to know that we will fail, therefore we won. Experience we gain can work against us on these. I heard of stories that famous business people turn away ideas because based on their experiences, these ideas will fail. But eventually it turn out to be a evolutionary ideas that change the world.
