How You Get a Competitive Advantage

Posted By: Randy GageFebruary 10, 2019

Championships are never won on the pitch.  They’re won at practice.

Whether I’m competing on the softball field, against another author to crack the New York Times bestseller list, or a company deciding whether to hire me or another speaker for their event – I don’t want a fair fight.  I want a competitive advantage…

During a softball game, I want the hours I spent in the gym, doing drills, and at the batting cage to give me an edge up.  For my work, I want my preparation, study, reputation, experience, branding, and marketing to cause me to stand out above the others.

You too, will have a lot more success if you work to create a competitive advantage for yourself.  So how do you do that?  What are some powerful sources of competitive advantage?

  • Your reputation
  • Critical thinking ability
  • Strong writing skills
  • Good speaking skills
  • Other unique skills
  • Integrity
  • Being bilingual or multilingual
  • Ability to practice discernment (rationality)
  • Vibrant health
  • Network of connections (online and offline)
  • Capital
  • Ability to adapt
  • Ease of learning
  • Willingness for delayed gratification
  • Your platform (blog, podcast, position, etc.)

How do you rate yourself on this list?  What am I missing?  Let me know below.

  1. You might add: former professions especially if they are "exotic" or complimentary to the current profession, experiences LIVING abroad "like the locals" (immersed in a more global perspective, not encased in an enclave), longevity in current field.
