How to Really Help the Poor and Downtrodden

Posted By: Randy GageJune 13, 2010

When you think about it, the idea of me giving a Sunday church service is kind of funny.  I was raised atheist, and entered a church only twice in my first 30 years on the planet.  (Once by accident, and once for a wedding.)

Now I speak at churches all the time, on the subject of manifesting the prosperity that your creator has for you.

When I found my way to the church I would eventually call home, I was unemployed, had no car, was $55,000 in debt, and selling my furniture to eat. My health was shot, my relationships were an absolute mess, and I couldn’t have been unhappier.  By the time the furniture was gone, and I was eating macaroni and cheese three times a day, I discovered a very fascinating thing...

I came to understand that success and prosperity had almost nothing to do with opportunities, chance, luck - or even training, education, or skill.  It had everything to do with consciousness, beliefs, and even subconscious programming that you aren’t aware of.  And the biggest block I see again and again, is people trying to save the world before they have helped themselves.

You can bring prosperity and abundance to anyone, until you have manifested it yourself.   The best way to help the poor and the downtrodden is to not be one of them!

Do you really get that?  Please share your thoughts below.

  1. I like what you say, Randy. I would add to it the following. It's critical to know where to focus you energy and consciousness.. Although what you say ties to the Law of Attraction which isn't always accepted by all churches, what you describe does tie directly to what most world religions teach and I fully support and believe in it. From the perspective of helping the poor, I think this can be a key guiding principle, but there is much support, guidance and education and has to be added in between, much like putty between tiles.

I'm now following your RSS feed,

    Cheers,

  2. I totally get this. I had a daily drug and alcohol habit; lived in a 1976 Old 98 and was ready to "check out" - I thought that was the only reasonable solution left. Once I sobered up and changed some of my core beliefs, my life changed in ways that were unbelieveable, and went on the become a #1 ranked sales person for a Fortune 100 company -earning many times what many of my "MBA" counterparts were earning.

Today, I am "stuck" at a new level...it is higher than before, but it still a place that I need to change beliefs to access!

  3. I totally get that, but some people say to gain you have to give, which also makes sense. Thats just karma. You dont have to save the world, but there is always someone who has less than you that you can help.

  4. Randy,

I am not sure how you are raised atheist, I think in my humble opinion, that is a choice. I am glad you found your way to a church but more important, once again in my opinion, is do you have a relationship with Jesus.

I will agree with you on the point of your message this time (shocker I know)...

It is the old saying, "give a man a fish feed him for a day, teach a man fish feed him for a lifetime".

Our mindset has EVERYTHING to do with where we are today and more importantly, where we are headed tomorrow.

As Chris Gardner ( The Pursuit of Happyness ) put it.. How did you get here? I drove here! Meaning you are the one who has to take personal responsibility for where you are in life no matter what has happened to you or what circumstances have been presented.

Great message today Randy... Thanks for sharing. 🙂

    Susan

  5. Thank you for your insightful words each day! It is amazing when we begin to pay attention to our conditioning, we discover how many limiting beliefs we have and how we are truly living other people's expectations for our lives. It really takes a huge, conscious effort to shift that thinking into prosperity mode but it is such a wonderful journey!

  6. I get it. You can't give away something you don't have.

I wonder if the trick here is recognising you're depleted. People who give on empty mean well but end up doing a greater dis-service. In this case it is probably that much more intensified as the giver is lacking in mind and soul and the recipient isn't getting anything substantial to leverage in their life.

Consciousness, beliefs and sub-conscious! They also say it's 80% 'why'... perhaps if you don't pursue/evolve/replenish - then perhaps that too has it's own 'why'.

If we're tapped out - then we have two choices: burn out or replenish. Why do so few choose to replenish? I digress.

  7. Its so funny that I read the first part of your email (the teaser to get you to open the whole thing) and all I thought was......

"the best way to help the poor and the downtrodden is not to become one of them"...and there it is...almost your last sentence. It's almost like osmosis!

I met a single mom with a toddler the other day who said she is going on welfare. I gasped and said "Don't do that. You will never get off it. Where do you think that will get you in 5 years?" The look she gave me....you would have thought I hit her across the face. I really need to put your web address on the back side of my biz card.

  8. Yes, I get it but I have to keep reminding myself all the time. I am past 70 years and rasied " Be grateful for the food on the table and don't complain" I was so thankful for my meager upbringing that I was afraid to ask for more or would hear " oh yes, it's all about you isn't it? in a hateful way and reminded that I was ungrateful.

Randy, It's more of a struggle for some than others. I think I'm getting there then I find myself backsliding and have to say STOP.

    Thanks for constantly reminding me.

  9. I totally agree with nobeing able to help others if you're downtrodden, but not so much if you're poor. I'd suggest that anyone in that state is too inwardly focused to look up and see the people around them to be able to help others. However, I know lots of "poor" people who are more giving of their resources than many "rich" people! I agree, Randy - you have to be present within yourself to help others.

  10. Hi Randy,
That is pretty lucky to be raised in an atheist and end up at Unity. Case closed. I know this analogy has gone around, but when you fly and the flight attendant does the demonstration with the oxygen mask coming down she say put it on you first and then the kid. If you don't live you won't be able to help the kid.

I am in a similar situation. I have been through the addictions and I am now willing to deal with the core addiction. I am also looking at that sub conscious programming. I feel those thoughts of doubt etc. I no that in time they will disappear. Changing my thoughts is the hardest work I have ever done.

    Thanks for all your help

    Jim

  11. That is the reason when flying in they tell you to put your air mask on before putting it on others, cant help others breath if you are suffocating yourself.

  12. This is an awesome truth!

It really starts to chip into someone's unconscious beliefs when you ask them, "How many people can you really help if you are broke and miserable?"

Great analogy above by chris nunez, too!

    Thanks Randy...keep "exposing" the truth!

  13. Thanks for today's post, Randy. I told you many times that you're absolutely awesome and a good encourager to us who are in need of encouragement. I must say I enjoyed reading today's post again. 🙂

While it's true that I haven't experienced the kind of prosperity that you have achieved, and thus I haven't totally grasped your conviction of success and prosperity having had nothing to do with opportunities, chance, luck, especially the training, skills or education (since I haven't achieved at the level of your prosperity the way you did..not yet), I do believe when we have faith - unwaivering faith - we (or God/Universe) can change things around. To be honest, I am not yet at that spiritual level of faith which I could absolutely convince the world that I am able to change things around because of my solid unwaivering faith. However, as I look back on how and what I had experienced when I simply had no choice but to have had to believe with child-like faith about certain things because of some desperate situations that I was in, and because I had no way out ...I simply needed to hang onto to my faith, I can now certainly understand and agree with you that the conscious decision to believe (the same thing as how you put in your words - 'it had everything to do with consciousness, belief...plus 'even subconscious programming that you aren’t aware of,') can mysteriously change things, and that strangely enough things would just work out the best at the end. But, as a part of the growing process, you just would have to experience going through some process of doubting first and then having no other choices but believing simply because you have no other options to choose. 🙂 That's how we find the reality/or the fact of how the universe/God works, meaning.. only 'FAITH' alone works (a conscious decision to believe =/ 'consciousness as well as subconsciousness programming' in your language). I apologize for my rather lengthy sentences written in broken English here. Hope you understand what I'm trying to say here...

[When you think about it, the idea of me giving a Sunday church service is kind of funny.]

I can relate to you on that.. believe it or not, I was atheist, too, rebellious against whatever my parents hoped and wished me to be... (I was a very black sheep in the family) the funny thing that I remember was that when they looked deep in thinking (praying, actually), I was holding chop sticks in my hands, making the sound of music out of them by hitting the top of the dishes so that I could shorten the length of their faith affirmation before the meals. I was deeply involved in the world with my human desires and emotions literally controlling me and lived the way I wanted which heart-broke my parents for such a very long many years. Our creator knows all that. I told you I'm not perfect by any means. lol

[I came to understand that success and prosperity had almost nothing to do with opportunities, chance, luck – or even training, education, or skill. It had everything to do with consciousness, beliefs, and even subconscious programming that you aren’t aware of. ]

It's all true. I agree. Unless you're in the position to take care of yourself first, as well as to know yourself well enough and love yourself, extending to others to help meet their needs is absolutely impossible. I agree with you on that.

[Do you really get that? Please share your thoughts below.]

  15. Hi Randy

Politically I understand you are libertarian. How do you suggest we help people (politically and as a society in general) who have such programming/consciousness due to impoverished backgrounds etc. Because of such programming and consciousness very few of them may ever pick up a self help book in the first place to find out if and how they can create change for themselves. What are your views?

    Regards
    Ari

  16. Hey Randy

I get that saving the World is an issue for many people - not me. I'd rather believe that the World is perfect in the way it is with its challenges of this moment, in 10 years, and all the current days in between and after. I also wrote this in a reply to one of the comments the day you turned privacy about your current health condition. That day you wrote that you are not perfect. I opposed it - you are perfect.
It gives me ability to be detached towards the conditions I face personally an among those to whom I belong. That the World is perfect exactly as it is, is the best of attitudes. Freedom to approach challenges full speed.

    Love and Respect

  17. I agree with your opion, Randy, and totally agree with this: "Give a man a fish feed him for a day, teach a man fish feed him for a lifetime”
I do as much as I can for a school in Tanji, Gambia, for our foundation GFF(Gambian Future Fund), to help them. But everything we do is for lifetime. I know that it doesn't feel good to only try to earn as much as possible for myself, but also invest as much as possible for these children.
As a wellness coach I (recently) started to build a big network of clients and co-workers and am sure it will grow big. So I can have a good living and help the more children in Gambia.
    Thanks Randy for sharing this.

  18. I think that you are providing a great service by giving Sunday church service...speaking " at churches all the time, on the subject of manifesting the prosperity that your creator has for you."

    ...
"And the biggest block I see again and again, is people trying to save the world before they have helped themselves.

You can bring prosperity and abundance to anyone, until you have manifested it yourself."
    ...

This reminded me of something I read recently in "The Passion Test" by Janet & Chris Attwood (http://www.thepassiontest.com )

This is from an interview Janet did with Nani Ma. Janet says Nani Ma is a revered Saint from England living in India for over 30 years.) Nani Ma says:

"When we serve other people we forget ourselves, we go out of ourselves. And the misery of life is when we are lost in ourselves, meaning our egos. When we serve other people we tend to forget our little personalities for a while...When we serve other people we go out of ourselves. And then we shine on the inside, God shines, our true nature shines, and that is happiness."

"For some enlightened people, their hearts are already open...Those people who are happy with themselves serve because there is nothing else to do...They feel compassion. They are already close to God...To help people who don't have joy in their lives and who have pain. It is natural that the enlightened want to help them out of their sorrow."

"When we forget our little selves and start to love others then we receive love, which is what we want... So this law of attraction is based on love...what we really want is just happiness and love. In order to find that, we must give it, and then when we give it we break down the barriers that separate people."

This also sounds like the Prosperity Law of Giving & Receiving.

I think we do put up barriers that separate us from God, our true self & others. This makes me think of "Let Love In" by Debra Berndt... she helps ( people including me) take down those walls: http://www.letloveinthebook.com )

I also think serving is different from self-sacrifice... Love yourself & take care of yourself so you can give.
And I think serving is different from people pleasing..."Give to Give" don't "Give to Get".

I am thinking that maybe becoming open & learning to truly give brings us to prosperity. I don't think this means we have to "save the world"...just that maybe helping others does help us by helping us to let go of our false selves...and brings us closer to God and want God wants for us...love, happiness, peace...prosperity.

"The best way to help the poor and the downtrodden is to not be one of them!"

  19. Hey Randy...Brilliant...I get..and would like to add to it something which may be of interest to others....Things were beginning to sink a bit for me a few years ago and I put on sooooo much weight...unbelieveable...diets didnt work..exercise didnt work....But what did coincides with what you are saying....Its all about whats going on inside your mind...I just focused on healthy food, exercised because I enjoyed it...came down six sizes in clothes and havent looked back....I can now help others with weight issues because I have first 'Got it' and helped myself.....Same goes for everything help yourself first....
Thanks for the opportunity to share
    love Angie :))

  20. I recently posed a question to my facebook friends with the intent of finding the ones who would answer it in a way that shows they are aware that we create our lives. I was disappointed by the answers- most replied very negatively. It triggered an idea for a post on my own blog, which will be up soon. I've been working hard to find more people with the beliefs outlined in this post. It's not going as fast as I would like!

  21. My mother repeatedly told me this as a child & I finally heard her as an adult, "You can't help anybody until you help yourself." Thanks for echoing the words of a very wise woman.

    Prosperously Yours,
    Derrick

  22. Love what you say, write, speak from the scene, DVD...! IN LOVE WITH WHAT YOU THINK, SAY AND DO, IN LOVE WITH YOU MY DEAREST RANDY GAGE! God bless you! Love, Yasmine.

  23. I think those of us with the consciousness have to share it. And obviously we have to get education back to teaching people to think, instead of telling them what to think.

    -RG

  24. " The best way to help the poor and the downtrodden is to not be one of them!"

This sentence is my creed! While I can offer help / services that do not require financial assistance, & often do....the majority of what I want to do requires money. I got in a completely un-founded conversation with someone about this same thing. Their problem was....their broke! Financially & intellectually! I have blocked them & do not even allow them to contribute to anything I say! It is poison to my belief system.

I love this quote: "If your daily life seems poor, do not blame it; blame yourself, tell yourself that you are not a poet enough to call forth its riches; for to the creator there is no poverty and no poor indifferent place.'--Rainer Maria Rilke

An old song we used to sing was, "the Lord helps those who helps themselves, Amen" It is a saying through the ages. We have to help ourselves. During the course, we can help people as we learn, grow & develop. Pulling ourselves out of the mire is the only way we can instruct others on how to do so.

    Great article!
    Thanks,
    g-

  25. Now this is a post ! How come there were no prosperity classes at school !? Many of my Dad's prosperous friends only had high school education yet became highly successful. (Back in his day, you found a job after high school and were promoted based on your performance at work. Now you have to have an MBA in order to qualify for certain positions.) After talking to them I realize they are intelligent people to begin with and have a great deal of common sense. I think your born as smart as your ever gonna be and education gives you a chance at landing a specialized job. They just wanted to have a better lifestyle and worked hard at it. I don't think any of them were feeling guilty or were afraid of becoming one of those evil rich people.

  26. I Loved your Reply Sarah!! I've had the same thing happen to me & the woman in question stated I had No Idea what she was going thru. I told her "Been There, Done that Single Divorced Mom Routine Except I didn't Put My Hand Out for Government Assistance. I Actually worked harder, Studied harder & got my own Independant Insurance Agent License so that I would not have to depend on anyone except myself ever again & that was 25 years ago. I own my own house & it's paid off to boot. On welfare that would never have happened." She still walked away shaking her head, not understanding my message to her. -Sad, I Know. Soooo, I think I'll join you in adding Randy's Blog to the back of my card. LoL... Great Idea!

Ohhh & Randy thanks for another Great Post. Helping yourself before helping others gives one a solid foundation. Changing your Mindset can sometimes be called a "Miracle" I suppose. 😉
    xo

  27. Thanks Randy for this great insight.
You are inspiring with God Given wisdom.
    Very appreciated

  28. I think about this a lot Randy. How do we support those who need the support without forcing them to get stuck? Like Sarah, I've seen lots of people get stuck on disability. (I know a man who's terrified his AIDS will disappear because he'll lose disability). I've seen people stuck on welfare.

And I've seen others hit a kind of bottom and get their lives together. The only difference I can see is in the individual. But as a society, we can't judge who we give to. We must give to those who need and trust that some will use it in the way we want them to.

Or so that's what I think at this moment! 😉

  29. I agree with you that the best way to help the poor is not to be one of them. One way to express not being one of them is by helping now no matter what your situation is while creating your own abundance. I see assisting the poor as a tool to creating my own abundance . Thank you Randy for sharing your thoughts on this subject.

  30. Randy you are truly true to you words. i have been serving the church since i was kids. I serve during the masses of church most of the i was in the church. But i always see poor people going in the church. I want to help them so when i graduated from college i work in the None- government organization thinking that i can help them by giving them livelihood which also limited amount because they many. But until now are still poor.

The painful side is that when i got married i also feel what my beneficiary feel. I dont have money to spend for my kids to schools and more.

As i reading books of prosperity and about how to become rich. A rich man who follow the well of the creator.

I am very thankful to you randy. And now i keep on sharing to other people the promise that our lord give us. Seek and you will fine, ask and you will be given and knock the door will be open. The prosperity is like and streams continue following its up to you to fine the streams and if you fine it you will abundant.

  31. Randy, am poor deeply indebt and facing great financial embarassment. All i can pray for is pls someone Help!

  32. Great blog right here! Also your website lots up very fast! What web host are you the use of? Can I am getting your affiliate hyperlink for your host? I wish my web site loaded up as quickly as yours lol

    13. Thanks for today's post, Randy. I told you many times that you're absolutely awesome and a good encourager to us who are in need of encouragement. I must say I enjoyed reading today's post again. 🙂

      >>>When you think about it, the idea of me giving a Sunday church service is kind of funny. <<>>I came to understand that success and prosperity had almost nothing to do with opportunities, chance, luck – or even training, education, or skill. It had everything to do with consciousness, beliefs, and even subconscious programming that you aren’t aware of.

      >>>And the biggest block I see again and again, is people trying to save the world before they have helped themselves.<<>>Do you really get that? Please share your thoughts below.<<<

Yep. Thanks, Randy, for being an encourager, leading us and helping us to grow. You're truly an inpirational and motivational leader. And thanks for being there for us and for me. May God bless you this week. I pray. Hugs:: from me. Nite. -Saachi 🙂

    14. (I forgot the system doesn't normally pick up symbols '>>>', The previous comment is inaccurate, so I copied and pasted my original text one more time. I apologize for the inconvenience.)
