Helping Others

Posted By: Randy GageJanuary 24, 2013

It’s pretty tough to top the amazing feeling you get when you help others.  It feeds our human need for contribution and feeling valuable.   It’s also human nature when we see someone struggling: If we know a solution, we want to offer it to him or her.

But be mindful of who, when, and how you offer help.

You can't drag people across the finish line.  Especially if they are trying to drag you back to the other side...

  1. Randy, I have been following your blog for about one year now, and I just want to let you know that my eyes and heart light up when I see a new post in my inbox. I just know I'm about to read something that will change my day for the better.
I will post a more constructive, adding-to-the-conversation comment next time, but, going with the subject of this blog, I felt the need to let you know how much you help ME feel good, motivated, and excited about my life on a daily basis.
    Thank you. 🙂

  3. This was one of the hardest lessons for me to learn.  At times I still feel cold or calloused when I walk away.  But what you said is very true.  There are those that are simply not ready, or  my idea of help or "the fix" may not speak to them and I have to walk away.  I also do a lot of short sales and help people avoid foreclosure.  In my printed business practices for 2012 and 2013 I had to add "I cannot be the only one that cares".  If I am, it does nothing but pull me back and fill what could be great opportunties with angst, frustration and ultimately a feeling of failure.  While it's great to help others,  it's also not my responsibility for how others choose to accept help or stay stuck where they are.

  5. Be mindful of who, when, and how you offer help. So true. Only help someone who, at the time, cannot help themselves. There are those who could help themselves but don't. If you give them a hand-out it is all for nothing really.

  9. This is a very good point you make Randy.. One of my mantra's is "I am a being of compassion. I extend love outward everywhere because that is my Nature'. However, I believe the point you're making is that there's a level of help you can offer as long as you see progress and you're not being pulled into the drama. It's always my goal as a leader to inspire people to grow, be more, do more and achieve more in Life. But there are those people who are so stuck in their old beliefs that no matter what we do, we can't get them to budge. So if I understand correctly, when we encounter this, it's best to be mindful and potentially let go so they will or won't find their way.

  11. people need to have their dream in both of their hands and a strong desire in their mind when running towards the finish line. if you see & meet those, i guess offering help is most welcome at any time. which is of course the best case scenario.
Yes, the valuable feeling ones earns for free is really hard to top. never thought about this little part -

  13. Helping others serve the soul. However, there are some who doesn't want to be help. Had a discussion with someone who thought I should never give up on those who doesn't want to be help. He mentioned, "It's the sick that needs the doctor."

I responded, "But the sick has to first walk into the clinic."
