Have You Discovered Your Assignment?

Posted By: Randy GageMay 14, 2010

Most people are looking for more prosperity.  But as we discussed in yesterday’s post, prosperity comes from providing value to the universe.  And I believe the way to do that is by living your assignment.  When you discover your true assignment, prosperity will find you.

So how do you discover your assignment?

I think it discovers you.  But you have to be aware to recognize it.  You will know your assignment when you come across it.

Your true assignment will require you to walk away from that you already know, and are comfortable with.  And the universe will never give you an assignment that you aren’t capable of achieving.

Here’s the next part of the equation...

The Universe will never give you your next assignment—until you are overqualified for this one.

So how you doing on that?  Please share your thoughts below.

Bangkok Update:

Thanks for all the messages with concern for my safety here in Bangkok.  Please know I am doing fine.  The situation is volatile and in flux.  One of the demonstration leaders was shot by a sniper last night, another was killed, and many injured.  I could hear many gunshots and explosions last night.  The army has blockaded the area and the protesters have vowed to fight to the end.

It’s a very sad situation for such a beautiful people and it’s hauntingly reminiscent of Tiananmen Square 25 years ago.   For now my event is going forward and I hope you’ll join me in a vision for the highest good for Thailand.  I will post updates on my Twitter feed if anything more develops.

  1. Randy, first of all, thank you. Since I know about your work it has been just a journey of Self Development in all areas. And yes, you have added value to my life.

I totally agree with what u say, the Universe will give you your next task, or your Assignment, but you have to be open. I usually declare I'M OPEN TO RECEIVE in my daily meditation, which is part of my "learning and letting go of yesterday's experience" routine.

I find that usually this Assignment tends to be very altruistic, and it feels real good when you receive those messages and info in form of Thoughts. In the beginning it feels maybe scary, but I believe that can be solved letting go of the smaller me and accepting my greatness as a human being and son of nature.

And yes, it finds you because it is Attracted rather than Pursued, so it is here now, all one has to do is be aware of old habits and modifying towards a new one, keeping in mind "How can this be useful to another human being other than me".

I really appreciate if you have any comment.

Thanks for your help in building better persons, not an easy task, but definitely the most useful and beautiful one. Thank you.

    Leo

  2. Do you think that assignment comes through meditation or from critical thought process? I try to be a critical thinker but have recently started to meditate, trying to find my next assignment in life!

    Tom Larsen

  3. Randy you are so right. I did walk away from everything I knew and it wasn't easy, but it completely changed the course of my life and even though the new road has been rocky at times, I wouldn't change it for anything.
Love the overqualified bit! Never thought that would ever apply to me, but now all these years later it does and I am loving the new 'assignments' now coming my way.

Keep safe, holding Thailand in a vision of Peace and asking that it all work out for the highest good of all concerned.

  4. Imagine you have access to all the money and skill you wanted, what would you want to be doing with your life? Spending your time doing? What would you really enjoy?

That is what I focus on...and then work to create a mini version, a seed version of it, working through the obstacles as they come.

Also, I realize that I am given as much energy as I can use effectively...too much without good outlets will fry your nervous system. As your body system learns to use energy and resource effectively the more you will be given. People become depressed Depression when don't know what to do with their energy or feel unable to use it effectively so instead of feeling it as exhilarating and wonderful, they feel it as stressful. So, in order not to feel the abundance of life they shut it off.

I focus on being effective in my life and allow the universe to fill me up as needed. Creating the cups and letting the universe fill them. Not trying to hold on to what is in them cuz that's like holding your breath...controlling not what is given freely by the universe but my container for it.

I have a pretty good mini version going on that I am very grateful for with some known lessons I am working on, realizing too that as I grow more lessons will present themselves, so I try to enjoy the good of what is temporarily in my life now while looking forward to the good of what will be created in the future.

  5. Interesting post! This is really the first time that I have thought about the assignment issue. Can you further explain being overqualified for our current assignment? Thanks Harry

  6. Could it mean that you've mastered to an extent what you are already doing; have grown and need to do something else to grow more?? Just a thought.

  7. Hi Randy, during my 37 years I can say that I have gone through a lot of harsh as well as amazing moments, the hard moments used to get me down and sad, until I understood, that they are all just opportunities of growth, now everytime I have a CHALLENGE, I think god for it, because I know it is somethig that I need to go through in order to be ready for what is coming, I believe we are blessed with the challenges and if we take them with the right attitude, once we are over them, it is easier and actually feels great!! I can not imagine what else is comming but I know amazing things are, and I am also certain that in order to reach my goals I will have to learn a lot and that means that I will have to face new CHALLENGES and Randy... they are welcome!!

    Have an amazing weekend!!

  8. By 'assignment' I'm presuming you're referring to Purpose. Living life without purpose can be empty and somewhat meaningless. And the knowing of what your purpose is comes through critical thought, which I'm sure you'll agree.

I was fortunate in that when talking to my oldest and closest friend 6 months ago about this, he lead me to a personal growth site that offered a pamphlet titled "Uncovering Your Genius" when signing up for emails. This opened the door to uncovering my purpose and I'm clear for the first time about my 'assignment'.

Furthermore, I created a business concept from this and am moving forward strategically and getting it done. It's about inspiring and empowering people in new ways.

So if this is what you mean by assignment, I'm there. And I'm very open to it changing since all things do!

  9. My assignment came- quickly- when I gave up what it should look like, when I got out of my own way and announced, "okay Spirit, you decide!" I had to release trying to figure it out. When I did, boom! There it was.

  10. Thank you for this insight about energy. I have heard that you will never have more money than you can manage well, it makes sense that this principle would apply to other resources as well.

  11. Dear Randy,
I love this post very much. It made me think a lot. I needed to actually sit down to think about this, when I was in the right frame of mind by getting away from busy moments. This assignment thing you're speaking of... first of all, I absolutely agree with you. It is something in many cases that we would know what it is without really knowing why, and also when we are tuned with the Creator... It is something that is profound that requires a great depth of insight, knowing our natural likes/dislikes as to what we want to do, and FAITH/BELIEF. This assignment would find us through the situations, circumstances with people, as well as our inexpressible desire that was put into our inner being.. perhaps by the Creator/God. I learned from my own life that things we force ourselves by manipulating circumstances or people around us would never ultimately come to us... and in most cases we instinctively already know that is the case, when 'us' is focused in the center of what's going on. It seems things come to us only when we let outselves be free, not being attached to things or our stereotyped human ideas, being wishy washy or weak/meek or indifferent. I recently heard someone speaking of the word 'meekness,' and wondered about what this word is often interpreted by the world. The word 'meekness' often describe a person who is weak or naive or innocent, but it can also describe the truth about a person who is willing to let go of everything and simply let her/his belief control her/him for her/his ultimate good - 'a Controlled Power' that comes only from belief.

[I think it discovers you. But you have to be aware to recognize it. You will know your assignment when you come across it.]
To think about this, this is actually a very encouraging and awesome statement but it is perhaps just the way the reality is btween the spiritual/invisible realm and what is seen in the physical realm. And perhaps we would know our assignement because we have an inexpressible desire in us, when we find one/come across it sometimes unexpectedly.

[Your true assignment will require you to walk away from that you already know, and are comfortable with. And the universe will never give you an assignment that you aren’t capable of achieving.]
Hmmm....this is similar to what you described in your previous post which goes, 'sometimes you have to jump off the cliff and grow your wings ON THE WAY DOWN' which means that nothing can happen unless we get out of our comfort zone into the unknown zone. Humanly speaking..though, I sometimes feel my life is a series of endless challenges, as with everybody else perhaps, beginning with a difficulty in communication in the language that was other than what I grew up with, cultural adjustments, dealing with many unexpected challenges with various issues/and people. But then... as we discussed before, there is always a good side to everything, and we are the products of what we had come through in life, and I must admit that I may not have become how I am today (good/bad lol), unless I had those challenges. Nevertheless, my challenges/and belief were perhaps almost nothing or just a miniature of what you came through in life when considering what you have achieved - 'the awesome you,' Randy. That's why I can't help thinking that you have even more dynamic missions waiting ahead of you in the future which will utilize what you have attained. Hope you also have enough time to rest and have a fun, while conducting this big event in Thailand. I love you, Randy. Hugs:: -saachi

  12. Great post. I am definitely getting closer to my assignment. It's so easy to get distracted and be doing what other people want you to do that sometimes I go off track.

The news from Thailand is shocking. Keep safe. Great pic of you on Facebook praying in the temple.

I hope all goes well with the event.

  13. I think I hardly saw any of my assignments. To recognise them is difficult for me!It felt like it all had to do with relationships-but where are my carrier?Where are my money?I have a feeling there is something left for me to understand to ever reach a good life at all-but I cannot see it.You know-I have the feeling everything I do goes the same way-to the dustbin.Maybe I AM one.I recognise all these patterns and cannot change them the much I would want to.Try but there is no breakthrough coming up-things on the way make me fall down again and again.I hope I can make it this time-by having your great blog for example. How do a human being make the most of her talents? And challenges?Great subject!

  14. Don't laugh but it took me about 10 years to discover things about myself through school, many corporate jobs, a few start-up companies and finally a calling for a more spiritual life.

Once I understood more about my relationship with God with the help of someone teaching me about scripture, I started to realize my principles and my standard. This took hours and hours of study, prayer, making new spiritual relationships with others until I recognized a new joy I had never experienced.

From there, I think I graduated to getting married to a long time friend who I'm really happy with today. But that took hours and hours of counseling, tears, prayer, heartache and working through more stuff.

Soon after, I became super prosperous in a career from helping my family in real estate but not without sleepless nights, playing umpire with the folks and learning to deal with sibling rivalry but once that assignment was completed, I was ready for the next.

Now my new assignment is leadership and helping others. I know from here, I can move towards more things but I think after many assignments, I still need to work on learning and growing more in this area.

I've had many assignments but not until now am I realizing just what they are -- assignments. And as frustrated I am sometimes to move on to the next, you're right. I need to master this one before moving on.

    Thanks Randy!

  15. My assignment. Hmm. I am mechanical by nature and really enjoy working on my cars ( the carbureted ones with no computers ). But there was not really much money in being an auto mechanic so I went to University to study Business and Science. I am very good at coming up with chemical formulas to solve problems i.e. Rust. In Ontario the road salt eats the cars away within years. Long Story short, I came up with a rustproofing oil that actually works!! It works by virtue of the fact that its a free flowing oil that does not wash off AND all the ingredients are cosmetic grade. If only I can figure out how to get the car companies to buy it!! I strongly feel at home when I am doing this kind of stuff but making body cream is what pays the bills right now. Maybe I should pursue this Rustproofing Oil.
