Goals that Work

Posted By: Randy GageFebruary 25, 2012

Last post we explored some interesting question about goal setting.  I hope you really gave them some serious thought.  Let’s look deeper...

The thing that really determines what kind of goals you set is usually your vision.  (Exceptions are when you are setting goals with someone else and set ones that will make them happy.  They aren’t the goals you would normally set with the vision you possess.)

So if you have a bold vision, the bold goal will seem believable to you.  If you don’t, it won’t.  It’s just that simple.  So as to whether you achieve a goal you don’t really believe – I don’t think so.  Once in a while circumstances will conspire to drag you over the finish line.  But almost all the time, you need a strong belief in a goal to have a real chance of achieving it.

A goal has to be exciting and challenging to you, if you expect it to motivate you to action.  Yes it is true that if your goal is to make it till Friday without getting fired, you’ll probably make it.  (At least for a while.)  But if you want goals that compel you to act, you need to set challenging ones with high rewards.

Next post I want to go deeper into the role vision plays in your goals – and why having a strong vision isn’t enough to reach your goals.  Thoughts?

  1. I absolutly believe that my goal "Making unbelievalble goals believable" is achievable. Now how does THAT fit in your story, @Randy_Gage

  3. I make bold, audacious, inspiring goals.  I get excited aobut them and think,"Yyup, I can hit that goal. It's gonna take work and stretch me, but once I hit it, man it'll be awesome!" And then sometimes I don't take action. I feel like I mentally check it off my minds checklist. Thoughts?@Randy_Gage

  5. I've learned that it's not enough to have a vision and a desire to accomplish a goal, you have to believe in your heart that you can accomplish it. If the thoughts of your mind and the thoughts of your heart are not in agreement you will most likely not achieve your goal, because the thoughts of your heart always win.

  7. It's my belief that collaboration is the key to attaining goals that are connected with a vision. For example, often we have a vision that's EPIC and requires an array of people with the experience in areas we don't possess in order to achieve it. GREAT things happen when creative minds collaborate.

How do you feel about that Randy?

    1.  @Jonathan1 Sometimes collaboration is required.  Sometimes that's an excuse we tell ourselves.  When you are really sold and have a vision, you bend the universe to you will.  - RG

  10. Without vision I wouldn't know if I could be, or do, what I want.  I know you have to be willing to do the "work".   I don't want to vision working 60 hours a week to reach my goal, or running on a treadmill, or giving up some of my integrity or dignity..  Why can't the Journey be fun?!   I think If I can open my mind and dream in color, I could envision ways to get there that motivate me to act on my dreams.  I think a lot of times I am missing the right perspective that I need to believe in myself that I can get from point A to B...   Then to C, to D, to E and so on..

  12. I do not understand about the goals you set with someone else to make them happy. Does it mean that we do not need to elevate our vision and work on ourselves if we have somebody we love?

  14. You say: a strong vision isn´t enough -
    - must be because we need a purpose to create that strong vision. A magnet!
We need an out-come for others and/or us, depends on which mental stage we move or which level the out-come is placed in life. I think it´s close to like baking a cake or cooking a meal: we need ingredients and the vision is the meal or the cake as a result, but to get there: we need e.g. purpose and out-come......
and something else you will "talk" about next time, I guess.

  16. the vision fosters belief and the belief fosters expecting.

A few years back I listening to a audio program called PROSPERITY from a pretty smart fella, I think his name was Randy something 😉  and he said something about how we get what we expect (and accept.)

    Makes sense to me.
