Goal Setting

Posted By: Randy GageFebruary 22, 2012

We have looked at many of the important components to succeeding in life.  Along the way, we have looked at some of the usual suspects like goal setting and vision.  Now let’s dig a little deeper.

We probably all believe in setting goals.  And most if not all of us do this.  But what causes you to set the goals?  And what determines how bold, daring and audacious they are?

And if you set a bold, daring and audacious goal – do you really believe you’ll achieve it?

And if you don’t believe it, are you likely to achieve it?  Yet if you set a weak, easy-to-obtain goal, will that really motivate you to action?

Please give all this a little thought and share your insights.  Then next post we’ll look deep into what really cause us to act on and reach goals.

  1. Great post Randy as this is one I sometimes struggle with. I do set big bold goals...goals that get my blood pumping just at the thought of achieving them. But the tendency is to have doubt afterwards in how they can really be achieved. I can't set incremental or meek goals as those don't even give me reason to work harder. So in the end I start adjusting my goals slightly to those that are a stretch but I think I can achieve. I know I need to stay the course and stay focused on the original huge goals. Looking forward to your feedback on this and how you go about goal setting.
By the way, with all that said, I have huge strides being made over the last couple of years. Getting ready to go pash cash for one of my dream cars this wekeend!

  3. My thoughts:

1: if I have the knowledge and expertise to reach my goal, may it even be huge - yes, I do believe I will reach it. It just might take a lot of time to get there.

2: If I really set a weak goal, which isn´t very attractive due to being small - I will do & reach it once it is part of a bigger one. As a single one, no, I probably wouldn´t go for it, I guess. It really depends on if it changes something in life - or not.

    - which is how my current (automatic) thought-pattern runs -

  5. Great theme, Randy! In my experience, the key to successful goal setting is to set realistic, attainable goals, even if you have to stretch a bit to reach a particular goal. Once that goal is reached, move the "carrot on the stick" a little farther out, and treat each success like steps leading up to an even bigger goal. Also, accountability is important, so once the goals have been set, make them known to your "accountability partner." That doesn't mean to publicize them for the whole world to see, but enlist the help of a spouse, friend, co-worker, or other person who will be an encouragement for you to reach your goals.

  7. Great theme, Randy! My thoughts are that goals should be clearly stated, have completion/achievement "by" dates, and should be attainable, even if a bit of a stretch. Once the goal is achieved, move the "carrot on a stick" a little further out as you set your next goal. But I think the real key is to have someone to whom you are accountable. Ask a friend, spouse, co-worker, etc., someone who cares enough about you to help you meet your goals, to "hold your feet to the fire" whenever you have a tendency to slack off. When I won't do something for myself, I am likely to do it so as not to disappoint someone else.

  9. The one thing I've learned about Life is we can be absolutely sure it will change. And the more prepared we are for change the easier we deal with it. And where setting goals is concerned, it's my belief that being prepared through focus, vision, clarity and thinking right thoughts, we not only achieve them, but may often find the path to the goal has changed along with the goal itself. Not sure if that's clear, but it's what I have been experiencing. And it's very exciting to be on the Journey!

  11. I did trial and error. Started with too ambitious goals and then sliced them until I felt comfort able. The key is to track ambition and reality! Do not trust your feeling about your achievement of goals. We tend to lie to ourselves.

  15. After setting bold, audacious goals in the past with support from mentors and then fallen way short of the mark, I now prefer to set goals that I know that I can achieve. That doesn't necessarily mean that I will have accomplished them all at year's end. I feel better about myself having achieved smaller goals than having failed bigger ones. I feel more successful that way. I then like to build on those goals by setting a goal for the next step up.

  17. Last year, I set some crazy goals for barefoot water skiing. My coach actually laughed at me at first (I could barely stand up on the water when I first started) but then he realized I was serious. So he broke it down into smaller goals. And by October of last year, I was going backwards on one foot with my hands in the air and the other foot holding the handle. One step closer to doing the 180 on the water. After that, on to even bigger goals.

Now I've got to apply what I've learned to prosperity. 🙂

  19. Great question Randy. I only set goals that I m really passionate about, goals that I believe will bring me joy and comfort. The paradox is; that means that I will have to experience some "pain" and discomfort in order to achieve my goals.

  21. I set HUGE Audacious goals earlier this year.  Many of them are coming to fruition.  I sometimes have doubts but I work on myself so I believe and see myself achieving them.

I feel like the larger the goal and the more passion, the more I want it and I'm drawn to it.

  25. I gave up the word goal a time ago and replaced it with the word promise. It's a much stronger word for me and eliminates the negativity that is connected with unattained goals. I never set limits. God will do that for me as well as give me the grace and courage to accomplish any goal that is in his will and plan for my life. Once you realize that God has a predestined plan for each of us individually, and that we have also individually been given gifts, then there is no reason to limit yourself. God is abundance and he has no limits to it. He will give us the prosperity he wants us to have, since abundance comes from God. "You will know the person by their fruits. This does not just apply to money. If you are a good stuart of money, you will be given more, if not, it will be taken away from you. I have experienced this for myself and know it to be true for all. If you are not in the will of God, which is his word, then you will stumble in the dark, trying to find your way,. Ask him for wisdom and grace and a diserning heart through our savior Jesus, and watch the miracles that occur. I am living proof that this is the only way to find joy and peace that surpasses human understanding and I could have never come up with the plans God has implemented in my life. Never even entered my mind. This is why all the glory goes to God, never to be given credit by my works. "Lest no man should boast".

  27. Randy,  Yes, I have a goal and at all cost, I am committed to hit it - even though it canbe a 'punishing schedule' because time is not on my side like yourself as i am youthfully challenged.  I know I will enjoy the adventure though in the process and am happy about it.  Cheers.......

  33. I like to make big goals - but even more I like to make small goals that will make a BIG difference. So one of my small goals is to raise the bar on myself every time I give a speech - to pick one tiny thing to come out of my comfort zone.
