Getting Started

Posted By: Randy GageJuly 13, 2009

It simply amazes me how much faster I get things done if I just start them.  Take this post.  Sometimes it feels like I could sit and stare at a blank computer screen for days.  But once I start, things just happen.

So I just start with the date and title.  And all of sudden, I’m in the stream of things.  Once we start something, we don’t like to have it open.  So it creates a subconscious desire for closure, which motivates us to get it done.  But the secret is just getting started.

So what project or activity should you be starting today?

  1. This is how channeling starts: you write the first word and the rest flows. It is magic. Words come easy because they don't come from the mind, they come from the soul...

  2. I never stared at a blank computer screen, maybe I'm lucky. Creativity starts from the moment I wake up from a good night sleep. Then I go for some jogging or swimming and rethink the strategy of things to do for the next days. If only we had some more time to achieve all the things we really want to do.

    Great blog you have here.

Succes is for people like you...

  3. I try to write 2-4 blog posts a week. Playing Mozart is a great way to get motivated to actually "start something".

Now it's time to fire up Mozart and write a book review post for today - "A Gift to My Children - A Father's Lessons for Life and Investing" by Jim Rogers.

  4. Sometimes I can sit and stare at nothing and it's not meditation : s but yes you're right when I start something, I want it done.
I always have a to do list ready so when I'm feeling like 'wasting my time' staring at nothing, I pick up the list and start one of the task.
And I do have an important one right now, so let's get me started!

  5. It is not about writing a blog or not..it is about starting to do something that you need to be done.. we always postpone things that we need to do but once we start it gets easier.

so we should urge ourselves to one thing , as long as we realise that it does us good coz this is the most important part :: the beginning!!

great post Randy, thanx a lot!!!!,

    best wishes, georgiana

  6. Hi Randy,

You are so totally right, and I believe we all know this already. Today I had to start up a campaign for the largest kick-off in Europe we have experienced ever. I created a user group on Facebook yesterday afternoon and guess what...people are massively joining the group, adding comments, launching ideas and many many more.

  7. If I have something that "should" get done or that I would like to do- such as a chore- and I don't necessarily want to do it myself, I get quiet and ask The Universe who they can deliver to my door who can do it better than me.

For example I have tried twice (and failed twice) to get my master bedroom painted. I moved into a new place and wanted to lighten up the room. But every time I started, I ended up with more paint on the floor than on the walls. (Yes I've painted before.) Honestly I got mad and then I surrendered the situation.

A few hours later I spoke to a friend whose son is getting married and looking to make some cash. He's finishing the job for a mere $100.

I also bought extra tickets to see my fav. band Nickelback. It just occured to me that they will be in town in about 2 weeks and I have these extra tickets to get rid of. So I asked The Universe to help me find someone who would like to buy them! Last night I ran into a girl I met months ago who loves Nickelback as much as I do. She said she would be grateful to buy my tickets!

In terms of prospecting (2 people a day brings freeom my way) I again ask The Universe to bring me 2 people I can share my business with daily.

I think it's the intention of completion that gets the job done.

  8. A lot of people say "When I get motivated I'll get started!" Actually I believe it works the other way round - just take the first step because then you have momentum. Take mowing the lawn - you might not relish the thought of doing it but just get the mower out the shed. It's funny but you then feel inclined to mow one strip. When you've done that you do some more etc!

  9. Hi Randy,

  10. Exactly! I was always trying to find motivation to exercise daily and who would have thought that the results I started to see and feel in my health and body once I started working out, are now my motivation to do more.

Same applies to business, there are things that I find very hard to get started, but once I do, the activity itself is what keeps me going, the "Wow, I'm doing it!" is my fuel. 😉

  11. I get bogged down by WHICH of the important things should I do FIRST. And I try to start them all at once, which I KNOW is a recipe for failure...

  12. This is so true!

Hi my name is Jet and I am a procrastinator... but once I make myself get off my Butt and start doing what needs to be done, it just happens and I don't want to stop until it gets done.

  13. Rob, There is definitely something to that. It sort of seems like by following through on the "idea of starting"(because that comes first) the actions help create motivation, and then your in a positive feedback loop. Someone once said, "Motion creates Emotion".

  14. Great post! We are what we do and the action we take. It's cliche and it's trite, but the Nike saying, "Just do it" really does work. Just take some action, ANY action, and you'll soon find the task at hand completed.

  15. Hey, great reminder! As usual!!

I have a small fundraising campaign that I am trying to get started, you just reminded me to remind myself of the other Jedi Master Yoda's saying..."Do or do not, there is no try" .

So I will stop trying and just get it done! L.O.L.

  16. Today I start working on my interests and your 6 training essays on my meeting with my down lines. thanks a lot Randy.
on Friday I have a lecture about posture in network marketing. would you help me in my lecture with a good essay or reference.
I use your essay that is about 7 article in network marketing.
    could you help me?!

  17. So true Randy!! The biggest step sometimes is just getting started! Once you do, you realize how much is truly possible. Without taking that first step towards that new project or goal, it will never happen. I think that it's fear that stops many. But as they say, feel the fear and do it anyways!! Action is powerful!

I very much agree with you, just get started! If you are on purpose, the universe will help you to find a way to get it done!! That's what I'm finding. And even if it doesn't work out exactly the way you intended, it's another lesson you have learned of what not to do & you are still one step closer to doing the things that will get you to your goals!! Next!!!

Thanks Randy, you're awesome! Make it a bella day everyone - today & everyday!!

    Love & Abundance,

    Bela

  18. I feel like I have too many projects!!!

Thanks for the post, so true, once you get started you usually finish, and then you feel great! The same holds true for getting your exercise in for the day, so 'Just Do It!'

  19. Hi Randy,

You're absolutely right! Once you get started, you do not want to quit when you're not satisfied. Always aim at perfection. Get something started and finish the job!
