Funny. And Fascinating.

Posted By: Randy GageNovember 20, 2012

Yesterday I recorded a special interview with Dr. Joe Vitale on some of the topics and lessons in the Risky Is the New Safe book.  Now if you know Joe, he’s a brilliant guy, and really can ask some searching questions.  So the energy was electric as we explored some of the breathtaking opportunities that will become available to humankind over the next decade or so.

Of course we talked about cloning, genetic engineering, mobile apps, asteroid mining, ocean floor real estate, social media, the cloud and other topics in the book.  By the time I got to artificial intelligence, Joe couldn’t contain himself any longer.  He practically shrieked, “How do you THINK this way!  You’re a genius.  But how do you get to THINK like this?”

And that is a fascinating question.  One that may offer some revealing insights into prosperity…

I responded that perhaps it was all the drugs I did on the 70’s, or it could be that aliens left me in a basket on my mother’s doorstep.  Either possibility seemed equally plausible to me, but Joe had an even better idea…

“I think I figured it out,” he said “It’s because you were kicked out of school!”  And that’s leads us down an intriguing line of inquiry.  Because when I really reflect on what he’s suggesting, it makes a lot of sense.

Because I had to take responsibility and create my own curriculum of education, no one told me what to think.  And that allowed me to discover how to think.  Instead of being told what facts to memorize, I was forced to be curious, to inquire, to question things.  I didn’t learn to pass a test; I learned to learn.  So I think Joe may be right.

What do YOU think?

  1. When you struggle you also question your situation or life. I've learned you have to ask the right questions and be able to "think positive" about that struggle in order to learn from it. Otherwise you will be drawn in the wrong direction. You have to be able to rise above your situation to see what's in it - AND see other soutions. We can all learn how to learn, if we let ourselves take this oppoprtunity. And that takes courage because it requires a change. A lot of people are afraid of change. My biggest fear is not to change, and that has been my drive 🙂

    1. @LeneJytteHansen Oh yes I love that the fear of not changing and  not being adaptable, but  life with that positive spirit that holds you close alway and forever would be dread in life if one could not be always positive ! I want to find the solution to my challenges, of time and space, and the well fare of my mom. So I seek!

      1. @SueyQ Thank's SueyQ! GREAT you seek. I believe that the answer to our own uniqueness is not found outside but inside ourselves! BUT I've found out this by seeking and following sound advise from long gone WISE MEN AND WOMEN and amongst others Randy Gage, that dare be himself. In ourself we find our own uniqueness that ony you and I have. Hugs to you from Denmark 🙂

  3. Randy, Charles Kettering - one of the greatest inventor's next to Edison (with 200 patents) believed that genuine innovators were at a disadvantage with their formal education and the least likely to make new discoveries because they were set on doing things as they were taught. Your wisdom and insights are based on lots of great and terrible experiences... and that's what we love about you!

  5. Learning to learn trumps learning to pass a test every time. School tends to insulate thinker from thought...and from thought to action. The school learning loop rewards good test takers....the reality learning loop connects thinker, thought and action. Clearly Joe's point is spot on and confirms what we know already about you...that you are a practical kind of genius.

  7. Makes sense to me.  You HAD to learn how to think.  Much better than memorizing lots of useless data.  Love it!

  8. You know, Randy,
Some people are fortunate enough to get in touch with the natural (universal) intelligence while living.
Others will have to wait until "death" takes them apart.
      Best wishes to you,

  10. I think Joe is right! Every single non-conformist I know is a fascinating person because they chose to learn how to think on their own, & not repeat on rote what society is trying to enculture them to think. It's pretty awesome. 🙂 xoxo

  12. I think critical thinking starts with looking around and feeling like something is out of place. Like the rules are not really how the game is being played.

I really do believe, two of the best questions are "Why" and "what if......"

  14. It is certainly part of human ability to adapt to his surrounding associated with a strong willing of becoming better... It's maybe also paradoxal to think that education, in some way, may kill or 'fade' this adaptation ability. I'm not an expert but I sure do believe you did well. Long life Randy! 🙂

  16. Yes and no.  I think you are actually too hard on school. You needed to go through all you went through. Fortunately you were bright and intelligent enough to catch on to real thinking, what I call, insight. Wasn't there a significant school teacher somewhere in your life? No doubt school is not catering for all types of brains and maybe there is the answer - knowing yourself and taking responsibility. Lots of successful people come out of school too.
    Have a great day:)

  18. I think that´s just the point. The first part of  People with such an experience either kill them self or go on every day to live but it´s more a vegetation. The second People wich have such an experience as you, they make somthing mistirious in here live because they are spirituell person. I think only with such en extrem experience you could become a realy spirituell person with all your thinking. Sorry , it seems realy extreme for someone but it´s my opinion. Everyone who have had such an experience, every one who have had a hurribal childhood or where they  happen really hurribal things,  have a chance to become a really special person  like you.

  20. I find it amazing how many highly successful people never finished their "formal" (college) education. I "got through" high school, but never wanted to do it their way. I was lousy at math until I went to electronics school, and picked up what I missed in high school and a couple years of college. I think that those of us who want to figure things out our way, and really work at it do pretty well. At 78 I'm still doing it my way.

  22. Because you believe that there must be a better way for me, to do anything that others say you must do it this way! So you seek and find and learn and yes, you trust in self. Then it becomes fun to learn and to share what you learn, So you are a kid that beats his/ her drum to the sounds of the music you hear!  and you risk the telling of the sound of the songs with others, and others share with you. the hope and the faith that there are many ways to get in that house, the front door, the back door and even though that window up above. just as long as you get in and help another. Prosperity is yours what ever kind that would be!
The desire is to be a thinker and a doer all at the same time.
Me, I have college under my belt. But they said I never took the entrance exam and this was all after I finished all the course work A/B student. So I said oh well, I don't need that to show that I can think, and do. that sheet of paper was for my folks and other people more than me. so it has been a win win ever since.

  25. I take my kids to a Education Centre - one of the courses is LEARNING HOW TO LEARN...   They say it's NOT ETHICAL to learn for an EXAM.  It's only ethical to learn how to APPLY wisdom/knowledge - otherwise it's uselss.  Why spend time being/doing useless?

    1. @million dollar
Drugs can play here an extra or the main part!
No kiddin´. I´ve been through 16 surgeries (for hours!!) in total, two with extra anesthesia (double) and I know that they add THC to it, so I was pumped as well with "controlled drugs" within 40y. and I became a fast thinker and speaker and i have tons of ideas.  But we better don´t say that too loud 😉

  28. I already knew that you're an alien 🙂
My son, who is now 20 and left school three years ago  is the next genius, I clearly see it. The way how he thinks, makes decisions, relate to information and other people has much in common with the way you think., that makes me feel good about him.
Thank goodness that I was studying mathematics, because there  trained more to think and find solutions  not what to think. Perhaps  my case is not so  hopeless... I hope.

  30. Must be one question that always goes unanswered but you need to know to go further.

Deve ser aquela pergunta, que sempre fica sem resposta mas que é necessário saber para ir além.

  33. I whole heartedly agree, you are DEFINATELY an alain's child. LOL
Being kicked out of school makes perfect sense to me. I'm accused of thinking out of the box and being curious and creative. And I'm certain it came from being responsible for myself, beginning at at age 7, when mom got depressed after dad left her with 7 children. I had to think or die.
I love the way you think!

  35. Being kicked out of school must be the reason why you have that way of thinking Randy. Although I can't relate much about being a kicked out, I can relate to your "Calling." Mine was not really from school but from an incident that happened to me when I was a kid. It kept me questioning life. Questions that has eventually let me understand how life works. I guess everyone has their own unique calling. I'm glad that I found this site. Thanks for the insights RG. 🙂

  37. Sure, Randy, Joe may be right. However I think it's not only up to it...
Many teenagers have been kicked out of school, right?  And many on them have been doing drugs, too...
So what? Do we have a boom of UPs? Not at all!
I think it also was up to:
    - your crystal clear vision (at that time), that YOU ARE GOING TO BE AN OUTSIDER TILL THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, with no chance to change that (according to society rules).
    - your enormous resistance to accept that, which had probably forced you to start creating your own rules..
In resume: it has been mostly up to your uniqueness, Randy 🙂

  39. You guys are right - some of the most creative people and brilliant thinkers never finished school either! Think Dell, Gates, Jobs....they weren't linear thinkers like so many in academia are! Think OUTSIDE the box you are in!

  41. You are right Randy, I also found out that most of the brilliant minds, innnovators, entrepreneurs, businessmen dropped out of school. They decided not to be boxed in the educational philosophy on life. They made their own philosophy.

  44. MAKES sense! As much as I can tell from my life & its challenges - that I did the school stuff but was broad up with a rare genetic default mainly in parallel in a hospital (s.th. which none can cure) and the prospect of a painful or rather bad  life (which never occured) I thought about everything on earth and in the universe, and I mentally took the whole men world apart. So, as you, I also had my extra challenge in life, far off the regular science or dailythoughts from others around me.
So, yes, Randy, I guess Joe is pretty much right at this point!
    BTW: "good point".
    Very good point.

  46. I think he's absolutely right. It's no secret, to anyone paying attention, that the school system dumbs people down, robs people of their desire to take chances, dream, think, or even ask questions.

    Stand in line.
Remember these trivial facts (till Friday-test day).
NEVER question authority (the people like teachers etc or the text books etc)
    8 hours a day - 5 days a week.

7th grade was the last grade I went through and I feel very blessed about that.

  49. Let me just ask this Randy.  Are all of the predictions you make your own?  I have a feeling they are not.   Unlike most of us, you are not afraid of progress and change.  Where your genius lies is knowing the inevitability of change and listening to the real mavericks who introduce these new theories and technologies.    I am pretty sure we are not even the most advanced civilization to have lived on this earth, and if we break away from conventional thinking my hope is we will tap into what made those civilizations'  technologies so advanced.

I give you credit for your bravery and your desire to keep changing and progressing.  I don't think you are to credit for these ideas, but I think you give them life.  I also think it is important to acknowledge where we are going in the future.

Your brave, maybe not a technological genius, but you are brave.  That is your gift.  You also admire the work of others, and learn from it.  Schooling or no schooling hasn't anything to do with it.  Neither does drugs.  What it does tell me about you, is that like the title of your book you are not adverse to taking risks to get where you would like to be.  So, even if you did finish school or you didn't take drugs, that spirit would still be there.

Anyway, I think your genius is adapting.

Stop bashing school though.  There are geniuses who didn't finish school there are geniuses who did finish school.  So, being a maverick thinker in that you embrace new ideas, how about embracing this one:  people reach their full potential in so many different ways, that it is important to keep all the doors open.  A genius will hopefully find their way.  But, I think you debase yourself if you suggest your genius is the result of drugs and being kicked out of school.  I think for you those were motivations and lessons that taught you perseverance.

  51. I have a college education and value it. I was a straight A science and math geek. While I learned a lot in college, the information I have obtained from people like you, JB Glossinger, Bob Proctor, Tony Robbins and many other people as been invaluable. I constantly read self-help books and literature that helps me to understand people better. I never took a lot of Psychology courses in college and maybe I would have had a better time understanding people if I did. Who knows? Nobody ever told me in school that my thoughts would play such a large role in how successful I would be. Once I grapsed the fact that I needed to change my thinking, my career took off. I don't think Randy is knocking education at all. He is just telling people to discren who we allow to give us information and what we accept or reject.

  53. I want to thank you first Randy. Thank you because you are a blessing. I may not personally have met you. I do know this, God -- as he is to me -- worked in your life. Everything happens for a reason and it's not just by coincidence.  You already had it in you -- the way you think and commitment to radiate your abundance through your work is still a work in progress that serves as a living proof . the proof that we as human beings have been wired by it's Creator and is just the way it is. For the love of what we do and life, we expand because we are meant to be that way.

Congratulation for making it to No.10 spot for New York's best seller for SAFE IS THE NEW RISK.

So, yes Joe may be right. It's really more than that.. God Bless you always!

  55. Spot on is what I think. For the 20 first years of my life, I was constantly told what to think about basically everything. I didn't have my own opinion about anything. But when my mom threw me out at the age of 20, I was forced to make my own opinions and making my own decisions. Of course, these decisions were rarely good ones at the time, but over the years I learned to make better decisions for myself and create my own opinions. Even though, at the time being thrown out, that was the worst thing that ever happened to me, it was also the best thing that ever happened to me. Just like you, though in a different way, I was forced to take responsibility for my own actions, my own opinions and my own choices, which made me the person I am today. And let's face it, I'm awesome! 🙂 Thanks for another great post!

  57. Hi, Randy, your astrological chart gives you the gift of thinking big and globaly.
This can be developed within or without formal school.
Each one of us has a unique genius.

  59. Brilliant post Randy! I just happen to be a huge admirer of Joe Vitale as well. I know the energy was flowing with you two guys in the same room. I couldn't agree more with Joe's and your comments and I am an educator.  I am so looking forward to masterminding with you two guys. 🙂

  61. Educational attainment or where you are on the social strata does not necessarily equal intelligence or the ability to think. There are many "dumb" people with degrees from prestigious institutions or who have been born into the "right" families or know the "right: people.Power, pedigree, and privilege hasn't stopped people from destroying banks, growing governments, making rules which hurt people, and running businesses into the ground. After all, many of this people were/are considered "the best and brightest". Hogwash. Intelligence and creativity have nothing to do with where you happened to be born. We've just become caught up in the idea that certain groups of people are inherently "better" than others, which I consider to be akin to Socialism or even Fascism. There are many "uneducated morons"- myself included. I have to think-  I can't depend on the government, my family, or a  big company to take care of me and those I care about for the rest of my life.No one taught me how to compose music or work with synthesizers, or most of what I know. Most of what I  have learned is because I wanted to; not to please other people. I own a Kindle and a bunch of books. Always learning. Always questioning. Always making beep beep noises.

  63. Yep, I completeley agree that schooling system has this side effect (hopefully not an intended effect) to twist our thinking and make it dependable on somebody else.

  65. I guess a school may be lowing the level of your creativity, but higher education does not nessesarily do that.

When you study at the university, you have more freedom in way of thinking that in school. It is a more democratic system where students have more rights. So they may not agree with professors and try to argue with them and explain their point of view.

That is why the university may help you in raising your creativity if you use it the right way.

I am making such a conclusion based on my experience in getting a law degree in Moscow, Russia. I didn't like the process earlier. I was thinking that professors were imposing their point of view, but then I understood that it depends on how you take their words. On your perception.

So I guess that this may relate to anything in our life.

  67. I dropped out from school too. Because we have nothing to fall back on (like a certificate), we have to be resolute to make things work. That's forces us to think creatively.
