Freedom through Discipline

Posted By: Randy GageNovember 2, 2010

One of the questions I get asked most is, “How do you do so much?”   I’ve shared a lot about my work habits, and many things I do to be more productive.  But there’s another element as well.

Discipline.

Having the discipline to do things even when you’re not up to it or don’t want to.  Which is the difference between successful people and the ones who struggle.

Successful people make themselves do the things that lazy people put off.  My motto has always been, “I will do today what others will not, so tomorrow I can do what others cannot.”

Now my tomorrow is today, and I can take the day at the beach, buy the entire new collection from Dolce and Gabbana, or spend a month drinking from a coconut.  Yet I still have discipline.  And want to always.

As do you.

Yes I can do anything I want.  But I want to be disciplined.  Because if I don’t, I get fat, lose business, destroy my health, or other undesirable outcomes.  It seems ironic, but freedom comes from discipline.

That doesn’t mean you can’t be spontaneous and unpredictable.  You can.  But happiness and success comes from knowing the areas where discipline actually improves things.  So how you doing on that?

  1. I must say Randy, doing pretty damn well in this department 😉

When you have drive, when you tap into the extra gear we all have but few are aware of, living a disciplined life becomes routine. Sure, you sometimes don't feel like doing things but your vision kicks the lazy thought right out of your head and forward you go, with your vision as the guide.

I've become obsessed with studying titans like Rockefeller, Carnegie, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Edison recently...and all these cats were disciplined, like machines. The one area these folks could have improved in was the spontaneity department.

    Thanks for sharing!

  2. My discipline is rubbish! Which is why I am probably not getting anywhere.
Think I need to have a look in the mirror.
    Thanks for the blog.

  3. I`m in the process of developing greater and greater self discipline.

Its funny how discipline in one area can be applied to and affect another area of life.

For example, I always used to leave dirty dishes at the table after I had eaten, I then resolved to atleast move them to the sink, later I decided to start washing them up straight away regardless of whether I felt like it. I was building discipline.

I then applied my new found discipline to my health. I started to go for short runs regardless of whether I wanted to or not. I kept going and lost weight and got fitter. I`m fitter now than I have ever been and aiming for greater levels. People commend me on my weight loss and fitness - it feels great!!

Discipline is freedom - I am developing more and more and wish to keep going!

  4. The source of the discipline reveals whose dream you're living.

    Freedom comes from SELF-discipline.... absolutely!

Drudgery and slavery come from excessive external discipline... and someone else's vision of the world.

I continue to strengthen my self-discipline.

  5. Happy voting everyone,

In the last year, I have worked on eliminating distractions and clutter so that I can practice self-discipline in a space that allows me to move forward, and feel more powerful.

I will say, cleaning house ( mentally & physically) has given me the freedom to think clearly, plan, and move in a more prosperous direction.

  6. Randy, I am dedicated and disciplined to want to do more to help people around the globe, because primarily, I inherited wisdom, knowledge and a legacy that put me in the driver's seat, where I could save lives and help the less fortunate. I often wonder if any dialog is being heard or if it is reaching the right audience. I have never made one dime online in 9 years pursuing the happiness and well being that others have enjoyed and prospered from due to our generosity, but even so, that is not a deterrent from making me stop writing. Bringing about awareness is just like educating the blind, and I should imagine, before I go blind, my efforts might help save just one more life somewhere. Liquidating four large properties and donating the bulk of it to government, local hospitals, charities here and overseas has since transformed my social standing as a homeless person, but I found there is a certain amount of pride in humility. Thank You for your post.

  7. I'm doing much better. I've observed people like yourself who are such great role models and finally got off my butt and got on with it.

Earlier in my life for many years I was ridiculously disciplined almost to the point of disorder, then I slid downwards and went completely the other way.

This year I've been a lot more disciplined even when I've not felt up to it and have been astonished at how much I have been able to accomplish in one day.
I've worked harder this year than I have in a long time and I have a great sense of personal satisfaction.

I still need to be more disciplined, but am looking forward to it as I know further down the line it will bring me the rewards I have always wanted.

    Thanks for the inspiration Randy!

  8. I have to admit that this has been a downfall for me - I've been far too quick to choose the known and comfortable - but with admitting comes change and power.

I've printed out your mantra on LARGE letters and posted it everywhere.

I will do today what others won't so I can do tomorrow what others can't ~ like travel, and feel secure, and wear a size 4!

Thanks, Randy. I don't comment often, but I hang on every word.

  9. I know that I can be incredibly disciplined in any area of my life, and when I’m not there is usually, no I will say always, one core reason … and that reason is that I have lost sight of the bigger picture – which is the ‘why’ instead of the ‘what’.
I think it’s kind of a disconnect from the passion of it all.
Sure, I may not want to give my time to tasks that in the moment aren’t my favorite activities, but if I can remember what it is that performing that task is ultimately going to get me, then suddenly I am far more willing to make the investment. And if I can get into the feeling of already being where I want to ultimately end up while I’m actually doing the task at hand … well then voila – suddenly I have found my discipline again!

  10. Discipline clears up the life.It is the only way to use the higher spirit in us.And true, you have to be careful where you use your discipline. If you have always been a "reader" for exampel, maybe you don´t have to go for hard discipline in book reading.Do it where you are really lazy, and it will help your other parts of life dramatically.I believe that. The more quality, the more benefits!

  11. Curious Randy, you often talk about sitting on a beach, drinking out of a coconut... curious why you don't?? I've sat on the beaches of Greece and Thailand and you can live like a king there real cheap.. but I knew I'd be bored out of my mind after a couple of weeks... is that why you don't??

  12. Discipline is one of the most underated attributes. I attribute most of my success to my discipline. 2 Years ago I set a goal to workout 7 Days per week for 52 Consecutive weeks for 1 hour per day.

  13. Hey Randy...Freedom through Discipline is a fantastic motto. I joined a Weight Loss Challenge contest at my gym. After three weeks I am in first place. The cool thing is, I'm not an overweight guy. So, my weight loss is about Fitness Gain. I'm running, cycling, doing push-ups, and eating only healthy food. My physical discipline is paying immediate rewards and it feels great. I now am looking to transfer that newfound discipline to my work life. I want to from from decent success to thriving professionally. Thanks for your post.

  14. Thanks for sharing Randy.

Discipline message today was right on point.

    Ironically.
Today I was just completing my game plan for the next 30-90 days, writing out my daily detail schedule. From workout time, family time, personal development time, productive personal business time, and J.O.B. time (deadline on leaving JOB).
Your messages, book, and rants have definitely reshape my focus and vision, and I now know if I'm going to expect any different future results it will require daily committed focus, mindset and discipline. If not, I will continue the same daily and yearly cycle of poverty.

Thanks again Randy. Prosperity is within reach.

  15. I can honestly say that discipline is not my strong point. I envy others to whom discipline comes naturally! Did you know that there's even a special desk calendar for procrastinators?

    --Things I Can Put Off
--Things I Can Put Off Again
--Things I Need To Do Before I Can Do_____.

Perfect for me! When I'm under the gun, I'm awesome. And I am definitely a left-brainer at the core. When the shit hits the fan...I'm your girl. But under normal, everyday non-drama circumstances? Pathetic. I work better as part of a team, also...left to my own I lose all focus, discipline.

    Something to work on tomorrow.

    1. thats not right, discipline is not coming easily to anybody... they just started to practice it earlier... the earlier, the better... and its also should become a habit, then youre on the right way...... I think its also tightly connected with goals and motivation, if you want to achieve smth or you avoid it, your true goals, wishes.... i dont believe that you have to force yourself to do smth to become your dream true... if you want, you do. and thats it. if you dont do, you do not want.

  16. Well this is like my theme of the month, and to be honest it is not easy. I'm forcing myself to do the following: going for a run in the morning, meeting two people everyday, eating healthy, sleeping well, reading a chapter of a good book everyday, and a couple of other things. I can't say that I have the discipline to do all those things on a daily basis, but I'm getting there!
And to be honest, without network marketing I would never have started... I'm grateful for this profession!

  17. well, that was awesome, just like all the other things you did.
    randy I have a question.
I recently read your book "why you're dumb, sick and poor"
is it ok if I want to translate it into another language?
actually I live in Iran. you've got tons of Fans here.
I wanted to share your book here with people, but I thought I might want to ask you for the permission first.
I've been busy lately, putting persian subtitles on your prosperity TV clips to share with the people I know, and I thought of the book.
I want to publish it here if I may.
    I'm a good translator, I promise.

Thanks for your great works, you've changed my life

  18. I hate to admit it but I am not disciplined. I am lucky that I am self - employed and can get up when I finish sleeping and arrive at work when I get there. My lack of discipline can be problematic from time to time because I do put things off. My customers do come first though and I will work until the job is done and not necessarily quit at 5 pm. After reading this post I realize I must work on my self discipline. I am in very good physical condition not from discipline but from my love of exercise.

  19. I use to be SO disciplined in everything I did. Somewhere/Somehow over the last couple years I have lost it. Especially the discipline in consistency.

Any suggestions how to "get it back"? What would you say is the magic thing that is the difference between those who ARE disciplined and those who are NOT? I know I have it in me....I have proved that in the past....but just can't seem to find the drive & commitment.

    1. It's when you get sick and tired of not getting the results you have visualised for yourself. When you work through all the why's, it comes down to what you put in you get out.
I can totally empathise as when you slide getting on top of it all can seem overwhelming. Take it one day at a time one task at a time.
One thing I teach my clients is to try to spend an hour in each of these sections: home - business - personal care - relationships - friendships. They usually find they have got through the day and accomplished something (even if it's chucking out an old pile of magazines/making a 'phone call etc).
You can do it - you know you can.

  20. @Clyde
are you doing the job that you like?
I was diciplined every time I actually enjoyed my work and my life.
whenever I wasn't pleased with what I was doing, something went wrong and I was out of discipline. then ofcourse it was the discipline thing that made me go back and do the things right, even if I didn'tlike them. but I have a feeling that if you're not enjoying what you're doing, maybe you're not doing it right, so it gives you a bad feeling and somehow... makes you lose the energy fast.

  21. RG,
What a funny time to bring this up. I was away from my "regimen" for several weeks and I feel extremely undisciplined. I tend to let things go and will do it tomorrow.

Living in the now is the key to all success. That means all the things I don't like to do. Many of the things good for me are also things I shouldn't do, like have a piece of cake at 11pm at night .Etc.

I am working through this right now with a therapist and I think my life was always about instant gratification. Eat drink and be merry today because tomorrow you might be dead. Hedonistic approaches are a lot of short term fun and a lot of long term pain.

    Thanks,
    Jim

  22. I find discipline a mandate to success in all areas of life. It's a great feeling to know you pushed through procrastination and got the job done. Perfect example, woke up early today to a cool Nov. northeast morning. Came up with a few excuses why I didn't need to go work out. I got hold of my negative thinking and worked out. Felt great afterwards and my mind is set up for the rest of the day. I also think that you develop grace with discipline. I learned from a billionaire once that I should not set goals, since most are not accomplished. He said, instead, make promises to yourself and watch the increase of accomplishments. It's working great for me. I'm not sure what occurs in the mind but for me I have a much more difficult time letting go of a promise than a goal.

  23. That's an area of great strength for me. It does help me to stay on track and get thing done. Although I do engage in procrastination from time to time, it's pretty rare.

  24. The understanding of the word discipline changed my life.. discipline comes from disciple of ... we are all disciplined because we are all disciple of something.. and don't look at what you think you are disciple of.. look at what you do because that is what shows you of what you are disciple of.. you may be really be disciple of lying to yourself about your body, intellect, $ etc.. even if you think that your are a disciple of health, continuous education, prosperity.. your actions shows to what you are really a disciple of.. so if you're not congruent in action with your thoughts it means that your not really a disciple of what you think you are but just lying to yourself to feel good in the moment and that comes back to you in poor results long term.. so get clear on what you are really a disciple of and if you don't like what you realize about yourself change the disclipline

  26. I've been working on this since last year and despite having read many books, only until I began to connect with the themes of prosperity began to understand the true meaning of what I am capable of creating.

Three weeks ago I read the book and is truly shocking.

Now I'm working on something that really cost me work and I must confess. I'm working on my self discipline.

After several years I create my plan for prosperity. I have clear the way I want to go. I have clear the 5 major goals I want in my life. I have it clear that I do for it, but I have also clearly need a lot of discipline for that and I frequently get distracted. I'm working on it and why I believe that the book comes at the right time.

Some days ago you told me dreams placed in front of me to take action. What does that really mean in everyday activities? You take my map to look at prosperity and sit alone? It is ...... rather ... what is it??

    With love from Colombia,

    -GJ

      -GJ
