Finishing the Year Strong

Posted By: Randy GageSeptember 20, 2011

Well September is two thirds over.  And that means 2011 is fast heading into the real-view mirror.  So today is a good time to reflect on where you are for your goals this year.

What you DON'T need to do is beat yourself up for goals you didn't yet accomplish.  You've got plenty of other people who are happy to do that for you.  It doesn't serve you to belittle or berate yourself for not accomplishing everything you set out to do.  In fact, if you did accomplish all of your goals for2011, I could argue that you may have set them too low.

If you are like me, then each year you set many bold, daring and challenging goals.  In fact, the goals I set for a year are usually so audacious that I don't even expect to reach them all. But by setting the bar so high, I end up achieving great things - even if I only accomplish 60% of what I set out to do.

So don't go negative.  Celebrate the progress you have made, and set your plan for what you can still accomplish by year’s end.  Then get to work today!

  1. Do I remember the goals I set back in January? In all honesty....no. As you would say, no sense beating myself up about that. I ask myself instead, What have I accomplished?
I have adopted a terrific goal-tracking, goal-achieving system, one that has me setting up a Weekly Goal-Achiever Action Plan - and following through with it. That's HUGE.
My business income has increased - maybe not to the level I'd "hoped" in January, but increase is increase. I'm celebrating!
My thought-processes are about a gazillion times better, in part because of what I'm learning from you, Randy. Thanks for your help! Thanks also for this timely reminder to review, reset, and RUN with my goals for this year. Onwards & Upwards!

  2. What a good reminder that new year´s eve. is already waiting ahead on the horizon and that we can go for new goals! Good posting with good examples - thanks Randy!

  3. I just can say, I have not accomplished the 100% of my goals yet, but I'm sure that at the end of this year my goals for 2012 will be hugest!!

  4. Hi Randy,

love the take that we don't need to beat up ourselves for the goals we didn't accomplish. As the old saying goes, it's better to set a goal too high and miss it than setting it too low and reach it.

    Thanks for your encouragement.

    Take care

  5. Hi Randy,
Great point here. It's so easy to fall in a negative state of mind when you should use exactly the vice versa: being grateful for all that you have right now and for the things you achieved so far. Any little progress is important. A wall contains more bricks...our success has more little victories.
Since I gave up to setting up low goals or complaining about how hard it is I progress faster 🙂
When it's hard you build some real inner power.
Thanks for sharing your insights 🙂

    Peace and prosperity,
    Radu

  6. Hi Randy,

Great note. Remember all, finishing the year strong starts with finishing the moment strong.

Do your mental homework each hour. Goal-setting is a moment by moment endeavor, just like personal development. Some start the year with great intentions which become obliterated by perceived obstacles 2 hours, days, weeks or months into the new year. Take those hourly breaks and watch your feelings!

My life changed as I made these self help breaks regular, as I learned to observe self-destructive emotions killing my intentions again and again over the day. I lived more in the moment, faced, embraced and released these emotions, and got back on course.

    Thanks for sharing RG!

  7. Very happy I read this, and not a moment too soon...I was JUST about to beat the crap out of myself for things I haven't done. Thank you RG! Back to work now. I've still got 3 whole months!

  8. On New Year's Eve my husband and I did our burning bowl ceremony in the backyard and it worked quite well. I'm even impressed with what that simple act can do. On to the finale for the year.

  9. This year I didn't achieve most of my goals. But I had a breakthrough from some courses and coaching. I discovered that I had the tendency to beat myself up.

Know that provides me with the power to free myself. Now I am ok to be who I am, fine with the mistakes I made. I get to love myself more. And miracles happened.
