Finding Your Purpose

Posted By: Randy GageJune 10, 2011

So how do you discover your purpose?  I’m planning my virtual seminar on this topic this month, so yesterday I asked on my Facebook page what questions you’d like answered.  But since some of you slackers haven’t actually “liked” my page, I thought it would be good to ask here.  (But this is your last chance to like my page, before my mother sees it and thinks I’m not very popular.  And don’t think I won’t be checking names!)

So here’s your homework:

“Like” the FB page and then come back here.  Let me know what questions you have on purpose, and how you discover yours.  And on a related note, we’ll also explore your “assignment,” so if you have any questions on that, ask as well.

  1. From what I can see peoples purposes are usually about serving yourself and others in some way do you agree?

    I spent alot of time trying to discover mine, I believe I discovered it. But how do I know thats actually what it is and not something I "just made up?"

    Can you have more than one prupose?

    1. I feel the very same. I agree we serve ourselves and other simultaneously when we are doing our true purpose.

      I to have spent a lot of time effort and thought into what I'm here for. And what I found could just be "made up" just like you said. Sometimes I wish I could just live my hollow life, but I don't think I'd ever be happy. I think there's got to be more to life. And that's what I'm after. My life has more potential than this! And that keeps me going.

  2. I studied International Business Managment at university, and now I work in a company that imports clothing from China. I have no idea if this ir my purpose in life, and I really don't know how to find out. What would be the question I should answer to find out, there is some clue??

  3. I think purpose can shift over time as you develop, but you still need that purpose, whether its "wrong" or "right" for you, to drive you through the "greyness" of life.

    One way to find purpose is to diversify life experience. I'm reading The Innovation Secrets of Steve Jobs by Carmine Gallo, and the author talks about how Apple may have never came to be the way we now know it, had Jobs not taken a calligraphy class in college before he dropped out.

    Jobs also traveled to India, he found new experiences and tastes in life and out of that diversity of life experience came creativity & eventual purpose.

    "purpose" is limited, because someone like Jobs is not motivated by any specified "end-stage". The guy loves his work and loves the process of his work...and so whether with Apple or Pixar, just as so he gets to continue the process

  4. Hello Randy,

    I have couple of important questions with regard to the subject in question.

    The questions are as follows: how do you actually understand not on a conscious level, but on a soul level, that you have finally discovered YOUR purpose?

    How do you become aware without any shadow of a doubt that you have finally unfolded your unique purpose.

    How to distinguish it from self-created illusion or some kind of other wrongful belief that either your conscious mind has come up with, or somebody else suggested?

    Looking forward to getting any fruitful ideas and considerations!

    Thanks,

    Andrej

  5. Randy, I liked your facebook page, at great personal risk, for many reasons. I'm sure your mom knows you are popular. 🙂

    I do and don't know my purpose. Sometimes, I feel so sure and then I don't know at all. I love so many things, so many passions to limit them is difficult. But, then I end up not doing anything.

    I started writing a novel then, I write some songs. I love the library, but I also love helping people. I love working with children, but I don't know that I want to be with them all day. I like people, but I don't want to be with them all day either.

    So how do you narrow when you love so many things?

    I guess it is not just about profession either? What I actually wrote first, was progression, and now I am wondering what kind of a Freudian slip that was.

    Anyway, since you mentioned Raniner Maria Rilke a few posts ago, it made me remember something he had said in "Letters to a Young Poet" "Live the questions now. Perhaps then one day in the far off future, you will gradually without noticing it, live your way into the answer."

    Of course, I am an older poet, rather than a younger one. I think these words are sound. We have to do and live and see what happens.

    The doing part is hard for me I come up with lots of excuses for not doing.

  6. I have been asking this question how to find my purpose for many years it seems as if this is a life long search

  7. This is a great theme!

    I believe I have found my mission in life, I want to enlighten people that they need good quality sound for their private sound/HiFi systems! So now I just started in a new job(1 of February) and you know what - I just know that this is the right place for me, I get challenged, enjoy great colleagues and get to see the world! It's my Purpose, and I am eager to get to work every day!!

    So at a time you just know you are at the right place! I'm home!!

  8. I had an experience of being in the womb just before I was born when it was impressed on me the `This time I would `see`. Immediately I felt a sudden quickening and it was like `whoosh` and I was born. As soon as this happened I had the realisation that I was a `twice born`.
    I have been learning to `see` but this is an inner `seeing` which shows me to myself and from this I have been able to learn.
    It also means I have been able to shed some karmic burdens.
    Recently I experienced feelings trapped at the cellular level which I was of course unconscious of, as I did so I realised it was like tapping into a personal DNA pattern but also seeinf it was an ancestral pattern coming from my mothers side.
    Once I had seen it and felt it the pattern could no longer hold me hostage as it had done before, and slowly it is being released.

  9. I followed my own internal guidance. I trust the process called life. Sometimes in the morning, I clearly know where I need to go and what I do. Sometimes I feel like a brake on the spot and do not know what to do, I ask the above to run me, to give any sign. That often pretends that it is not logical. Later, it turns out that there is deep logic ... intellect doesn't work here.
    I try to remember what I dreamed in childhood and understand nature of that dreams. When I've felt one thread, I was looking for the next mark, while my path is increasingly evident. And very important is to make decisions quickly. Action!

    For me the difficult part is to understand others. When I've changed my thinking, I can hardly remember how I thought before, rather I do not feel the changes in my thoughts. How can I help others to change and find their purpose?

  10. In the beginning it isn’t easy to make your own way and find out who YOU truly are.

    It’s hard and sometimes painful.

    But if we don’t embark upon this path we will never grow, we will never evolve into who we truly are.

    We will never know who we are because the trap of the easy road is suffocating like a drug that slowly puts us to sleep. Yes, like the field of poppies in the movie Wizard of OZ.

    Dare to be YOU!

    Dare to make a stand and take your life by the reins that are rightfully yours to take.

    Dare to face yourself in the mirror each day and each night to connect with your identity.

    Stop letting the masses dictate who and what you are, how you should be, how you should act, what you should do, how you should feel and think…

    Do you have the strength to make that stand?

    Do have the deep inner need to be who you truly are in the face of the world?

    Can you embrace your own expression, creativity, mind, heart and soul?

    Are you tired of being tired, confused of being confused, sick of being sick, and wasted from wasting your energy in dead end endeavors set forth by others???

    Perhaps it’s time to make that personal stand? The most important and worthy stand any human can make in life.

    Break through the artificially created barriers of this world.

    Within God-Mind, all things are possible.

  11. Due to economic times and the construction industry "lull", it is imperative that I bring in income. My current field is network marketing and health and as you know, takes a great deal of time and concentration.
    I am also a professional Christian singer and for awhile now, I have had very strong impressions that I should make my album and write a book based on my Angel experiences and divine appointments/answers to prayer. I am currently quite a delema as I feel the album/book is my calling and the marketing is my bread and butter right now.
    Help. Market/meetings/phone calls or concerts/book signings/love offerings and chance the income.

  12. I relate to Marita. If I look back over my working life, I realised that every job/role I had, had the same outcome. I developed skills and grew through each role, and with using my skills was able touch someone else's life positively. That makes me feel good that I have been able to add value. The purpose was different each time. It is easy to identify the purpose "after the event", sometimes I have just had to trust the process, trusting my gut. I would like to know more.

  13. I'm still a Facebook moron.. went over to the page, same boring nonsense... anyway.. here's my question, wWen, why and how did you know in your soul that you had discovered you purpose?? no flip answers please...

    1. I see my vision about myself (as movie in my imagines) what I will do, how it will look in future;
      Every morning I like to get up and do actions that is necessary to move me forward (before I have made a plan of these actions);
      I know what I don't have to do and what actions to avoid;
      I am learning not only from books or teachers, I learn from my own life- how to make things better;
      I like what I think now, I like and feel my excitement;
      I feel inside smile almost always;
      I see negative things less and less, everything what I see around are just happenings;
      I feel financially safe;
      I feel myself as a great person;
      I like this process;

  14. My purpose is to help people discover who they really are. I'm not talking about ego but rather that we are pure conscious energy having a human experience.

    Knowing that we can let go of fear and really make an impact on helping the "greater good."

    1. I love your response Justin, thats how I feel too. I believe that I have been guided to certain experiences and people who in some way shine light on what my purpose is. I feel that my purpose is to help people discover who they really are and to become more aware. I have been given specific gifts and the tools at different points in my life/journey, and they continue to guide me from one place to the next. It is never ending. My journey of self discovery is directly connected to my purpose in life, to help others in their journey as well.

  15. Purpose. purpose.. Oh my I do believe we all have several that are similar ..One being that this is a human experience. Two being that the only Omnipotent being is you will ever know is God. ( Maybe thats backwards.)Then I do believe that you can be challenged /ie, Watching Grand daughter and she starts to order me to do even the most trivial thing ,, my response is to attempt to esxplain to her as nice as I can that she is not the boss.(WE all know God is the only 24/7 boss). So sometimes challenges mean stop and explain not that is the way to go..( Going with the norm as of today is to let children lead us anywhere.) But the previous is only to be partial truth that we return to our Lord ,,at times thru their questions and /or innocentness.

  16. Could you speak about your thoughts on having a large vision for your life...having a strong feeling and sometimes having to go with the flow in order to discover it as you go...I don't know. Sometimes I have found that blind faith is better than trying to figure out the 'how' in finding your large vision all at once and being open to the opportunities and people that present themselves in the process. Does that make sense?

  17. First, thank you very much for the last virtual seminar "Prosperity is Created in the Mind First". For me, it was the best of the series so far. Clear with a very concrete set of advices to apply immediately.

    Second, my question is about clarity:
    I am trying to understand better the level of details you want to incorporate within your vision. Indeed, I feel that the more detailed it is, it is becoming more vivid and easier to picture but on the other hand it also becomes restrictive and closes alternative opportunities.
    What are your advice on this ?

  18. "My purpose is to help people discover who they really are..." ( from Justin)
    Who I am? I am part of God in human beeing. I am not american, latvian or chineese, I am not female or male, I am not teacher, doctor, MC worker or expert of sound/HiFi systems. I am human beeing who have to realize potential in the life. You also. How we could realize potential? We have to be the best in doing what we like. If you are crazy of sound/HiFi systems, maybe you will find out some innovation, and become as one of world famous innovators, or maybe develop your leadership skills and create world biggest HiFi systems company? Why not you? Why not me? Step by step. Maybe biggest secret is to help people discover where is button to awake the wish "TO BE THE BEST"?
