Finding Purpose and Meaning in Your Life

Posted By: Randy GageDecember 7, 2018

We’ve spent the week looking at three possible paths to a life of meaning:

  • Submerging oneself in a cause or group
  • Avoidance
  • Pursuit of meaning

Last post I told you I feel the third option is the only one that leads to a life that has you excited to be alive, to know that you’re moving from success to significance.  So exactly how do we do that?  How do we discover what lights us up, what we’re really meant to do, and grow into who we are capable of becoming?

If I only fucking knew…

Maybe some of you figured that since I do podcasts and post blogs like this, I have the meaning of life all sorted out.  Sorry, I don’t.  I’m just doing the best I can, with what I have to work with.

However, I’ve spent the better part of 30 years exploring this path and the rewards it holds for us.  So while I don’t have everything figured out, please allow me to share some of the lessons I’ve learned, in the pursuit of becoming a more enlightened person:

  • Nurture your curiosity, and feed it a healthy daily diet.
  • Set your intention to be a little bit better person when you go to bed than you were when you got up.
  • Be a student of the deep thinkers. People who make your head hurt. (Right now I’m studying Zibaldone, which is making me feel like an intellectual waif.)
  • Don’t seek leaders to follow, but people you want to emulate and learn from.
  • Endeavor to help those less fortunate than yourself.
  • The only free cheese is in the mousetrap.
  • The greatest gift you can share is helping another person raise their aspirations and self-esteem.
  • You can’t get better and look good at the same time. Pay the price.
  • Stop playing it so safe. Live a life of exploration, adventure and audaciousness.
  • Forgive everyone. Especially yourself.

You got more?  Love to hear from you below.

  1. Hey Randy!
A common trap I see when people are looking for meaning is that they often come from a place of unworthiness - and feel like having a clear purpose will make them worthy.

But what if you're already worthy? What if there's nothing you should do, and this life is yours to explore and enjoy? Not because you have to, but because it's fun!

I've been playing with this idea for the past couple of months and it's really exciting.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

    Cheers

    1. Great question! I see the worthiness issue as a separate one. (But critical one.) Even when you realize you're worthy, you still have to decide if and how you're going to approach a life of meaning.

  2. “You can’t get better and look good at the same time. Pay the price.” Can I ask, what do you mean by that ?

  3. I'd like to share this from Wayne Dyer, I found it to be immensely thought provoking. It didn't break my brain, it helped open it up. In his book The Power of Intention, the audio version, he iterates: The respect in "Self Respect" comes from the SELF. When you get that (paraphrasing Wayne) our only work is to release our resistance to the cosmic power of intention; when you feel that pure etheric connection to "all that is", as he named this "the power of Intention", then we can live on purpose with not only no interference from our ego, rather the ego becomes the gatekeeper to our higher SELF, allowing FULL FLOW of abundance.

In addition, In the chapter of Mad Genius on ego, in your book, RG, you speak about becoming and being "conscious of consciousness". I feel what W. Dyer wrote and what you wrote, reference the same idea. The more we can access with ease and purity, the connection between us and our "source"; the "purer our perception will be" of what source (abundance) is, who we are in relation to source, and truly the impact we can have collaborating with our minds, as source intended.

Your "cosmic consciousness" dvd, also indirectly references this too, RG.

I certainly don't pretend to have it all figured out either. If my input points people to some trustworthy resources, we all can live more meaningfully and prosperously. It's definitely proved out in my journey. Tahnkyou, thankyou, thankyou..
