Expect to Win

Posted By: Randy GageFebruary 20, 2012

Fascinating discussion going on the last post on lying to yourself.  Now let’s look at another perspective – the expectations you create for yourself.

How important are they?

Huge.  Because when you start a project expecting to fail, you almost always do.  And people who start a project expecting to succeed usually do.

Why is that?

Who cares?  Naturally I have a lot of theories about why that is.  But does it really matter?  The reality is, that this is the case.

So how do you expect to win?

A good start is beginning with small victories.  Start projects you know you can achieve.  Then stretch a little and get some more victories, build your confidence.  Then stretch further and repeat the process.

Borrow belief.  We all have people who believe in us more than we do ourselves.  Find those people in your life and borrow some of their belief.

And stop back by this blog.  Because I believe in possibilities, potential and greatness.  So that means I believe in you!

  1. Sometimes, this is the only way to make it through to the sunshine above the clouds in our life: "Borrow belief. We all have people who believe in us more than we do ourselves. Find those people in your life and borrow some of their belief."

Thank you for sharing this over on FB where I picked it up.

Randy, would you be so kind as to be a guest blogger on http://www.happymagiclovedust.com? I'm asking for guest bloggers on Wednesdays.

  2. Randy.. Great topic.. And my journey for the past couple of years has been exactly this. And now, I have held the vision for an amazing film and TV project about history's most legendary popular music and the pioneers that created it and it's taking on its own life. Very exciting and wouldn't be happening if I didn't completely believe it was possible. So yes, believing in what's possible and KNOWING there are no limits is what Life is truly about. And the journey is why we're here!

  4. And sometimes we don't win because we never really defined what winning looks like. Often our dream doesn't have a distinct "finish line" - so we get to create one. So maybe instead of saying that "winning" for us is getting that book on the shelf in Barnes and Noble - we can say that "winning" is writing the book. And we celebrate that win when we get there. Great post Randy! And thanks for believing in us.

  6. Soooooo true! One of the biggest lessons you've helped me focus on, understand, and finally implement is the amazing power of belief. This shift in mindset (I've had belief in certain areas, but needed to gain confidence and enough self-worth to apply it in other areas that I always "believed" were for other, successful people), has had an enormous, life changing impact on me.

It's fascinating, several months ago, I wrote in a comment on your blog about the belief/self worth/development work I was doing, and gave some examples of what my life looked like just a few short years ago (I was a valet parking cars at a restaurant 5 days a week, making about 18k a year), and what I intended to accomplish with my new life and new mindset - there were some pretty lofty goals. But the reality is, they are all coming into focus and are at varying stages of realization. These included producing a tv show (of which I have zero experience in), which is now being shopped to networks; writing a book (which I'm currently outlining); creating a super successful business (which is going fantastically, I've had to hire my first full time employee - our goal is to do 200k this year); expanding and becoming more successful in my musical career (a Cee Lo song I played drums on just won two Grammy's!); and there's lots more good stuff cookin'! I sincerely hope this doesn't come off as bragging or being overly self congratulatory (that is SO not my intention), I just wanted to share my personal experience, and how this work of developing ourselves is the most important work we can ever undertake.

Jim Rohn famously said: "If you work hard on your job you can make a living, but if you work hard on yourself you can make a fortune!" Man, I'm not sure if there have ever been truer words spoken.

So yeah, I'm a big believer in belief! If we do our work on ourselves (and man, I'm a major work in progress!!!) consistently, and we create a new, more powerful mindset, anything is truly possible!

This reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from Henry Ford that speaks directly to the power of belief: "The man who thinks he can and the man who thinks he can't are both right."

Thanks RG for all the support, reminders, wisdom, insight, love and direction you share with us all! This is looking to be an epic 2012!!
