Ego and Success

Posted By: Randy GageJuly 9, 2012

I saw a fascinating interview with coach Mike Krzyzewski, who is coaching the latest version of the “Dream Team” – the USA Olympic basketball squad.  He was asked how he got these superstar athletes to check their egos at the door.  His answer was quite illuminating…

He said he didn't expect his players to check their egos at the door.  In fact he desires his players to have ego.  But he wants them to channel that personal ego into the team ego.

There’s a powerful lesson in that.

P.S.   I'm headed out tonight for another tour.  I'll check in from Amsterdam

  1. Hurrah!  There's another person in the world who doesn't think God made a mistake when he added the ego to the human creation.
I've long thought that the ego is a useful, even essential, aspect of my humanity.  One of my important tasks has been to heal my ego, which for various reasons got bashed about when I was a child,  and then to help it mature.  A mature ego is a terrific tool.
I'm  not sure about the "team ego" concept.  Frankly, the inclination of humans to replace their individuality with team-identity can be pretty scary.  It might be useful for "winning" but I'm not at all sure that "winning" is a goal worthy of a human being.

  3. It depends on how we use our ego -->> important is to be able to use it and not being driven by it permanently, I guess ;))
    safe trip!

  5. Thank you Randy for helping me to expand my view point about many topics.  I like the idea of including our egos in our daily activities. That attitude is the difference between "fighting our ego or transcend it" because someone told us that it is "evil or inappropiate" and USE IT to our advantage.

  7. I'm always reminded of the saying, "Energy flows where Attention goes", or "Your point of Attention is your point of Attraction".. Focusing on the amazing possibilities we bring as powerful, visionary people to the world is important. And KNOWING we ARE amazing in EVERYTHING we do is what matters.

As the saying goes, "Just BRING IT!!" Thanks for another great reminder Randy and Prosperity TV was another great one too! Travel safe!!

  9. What an awesome concept by an awesome coach. Too often in personal and spiritual growth we get caught up in the idea of being "egoless". I tried this approach before and it took away a lot of my personal power. Ego used to serve the greater good is a powerful approach.

  11. If you substitute the word AMBITION for ego, you essentially get the same thing, at least in this case. It's kinda fun when folks aspire to world peace and serenity...and not much else.  My usual answer to that is "you'll achieve all of those things as soon as you're looking at the grass from the roots on up.

We're put on planet earth in these bodies and these personalities to see what kind of trouble we can get in, how we can resolve it, and how much love and heat energy we can create. Dude...play nice with the other kids, but take your talent out for a spin!  🙂

  13. Short, sweet, & on the money. (Just the way I like it)... Great pickup from Coach K. Though I don't love the word EGO as it has its negative implications, in this case what he is saying I couldn't agree with more. Gr8 post!

The only reason the word Ego seems to have "negative implications" is because we give it that meaning.  As it says in the Course in Miracles, nothing has any meaning except the meaning we give it.  What a powerful concept!  I choose to give almost everything in my life a positive meaning, and the more I do that, the happier I live.  Ego is one of our gifts - let us use it wisely.  Randy does.
