Do You Procrastinate?

Posted By: Randy GageSeptember 1, 2009

We all get busy and put off things from time to time.  We all procrastinate on some things, even if it is just once in a while.  And some people procrastinate on things a lot.

But what’s the real reason?

One thing we know, is it’s not because you are “too busy.”  We always find time for the things we want to do.  So if you find yourself procrastinating on something, it’s worth a little thought:

What do you usually procrastinate about doing?  And why do you think that is?

  1. Dear Rany,

I think it has a simple reason: safe indolence zone. we have no strong reason for things to do on time. we have no exigency, so we procrastinate on some things easily. I hope I eat my biggest frog every morning 😉

    Best wishes

  2. procrastination!!has a pay off, I just to create many goals and procrastinate, feel like crap and create newones, like a crazy loop, dozens of things to do, well I discovered that I was getting a pay off out of this...well everytime I had a faliure It was a confirmation that I was not good enough, now I am working in one single vision, one dream and that has reduce my procrastination to almost zero. GOD help me to the your copilot every second..

  3. I think a lot of people - myself included - tend to procrastinate when they feel either overwhelmed or indecisive.

If we're absolutely certain that we'll be successful with the project we're working on, then we never procrastinate. It's when that self-doubt creeps into our minds - "Will this really work the way I think it will?" - that's when there's nothing better to do than find excuses for procrastination.

Other times, if a product is really large - like writing a book - then we tend to get overwhelmed. The simple solution is to break it down into more manageable and less intimidating goals. Just 5 pages a day, for instance.

  4. The people who are successful just do what needs to be done.
The other people (myself included) put off whats uncomfortable.
If we did the things that we put off we would probably be successful and the uncomfortable would become comfortable.

  5. I definitely procrastinate on work I don't want to do! If I enjoy it, I do whatever the task is with enthusiasm, but if I am deeply disengaged or disinterested, it gets put off until the very last minute. The good news is I get everything done I want to, but not neccesarily what others want me to do!

  6. Often I take a look at this from the perspective of "what you resist, persists"... Sometimes I can't figure out what I'm resisting and yet I know I am! I hate that.

I think many of us will agree that those things that bring us pleasure and instant gratification we will do. On the other hand, those things that we know we need to do, but may not bring as much pleasure are usually the ones we procrastinate about. So the question is, 'what and why are we resisting?'

  7. I'll answer this later...

Ok, ok... someone had to say it!

I procrastinate kinda often, and obviously I attach more pain than pleasure to whatever it is. Sometimes I procrastinate doing something b/c I don't know how to FINISH it, and so I won't start.

Sometimes I'll procrastinate b/c I want something to be perfect, or b/c I am afraid of what will happen if it IS perfect!

So many reasons to procrastinate, and yet, so many reasons not to!

  8. Randy,
Thanks for talking about the things that matter. I am having to really face that procrastination is the major key to my not achieving the success I want. For me, it is a combination of perceived pain or inconvenience associated with a task. I think, " I'll do it later", but it's still "painful" later, so it never happens. I also lack time schedule discipline. My clock is from another planet.
These are serious issues to overcome and any help is greatly appreciated.

  9. I procrastinate. A lot. I have spent time considering WHY I do it. Am so used to being a failure that I procrastinate to keep it that way? Do I like to feel like I need help and so I let things slide until I am in trouble? Do I like the pressure of leaving things until they are critical? Maybe some of all of these applies. Fixing it is hard work, but it is work that I am doing.

  10. Procrastinate...that is such a popular word, putting off what needs to be done today is a result of fear.

Fear of success or fear of failure. Many people commit on paper but never take action since they fear the result being failure and in many cases success.

Failure - what would people think of me if I fail? how can I tell my friends/family/spouse/children or myself...a lot of people don't want to disappoint themselves so they avoid taking action...the problem here is most people don't even know they fear failure.

If you ask yourself why would I fear success? In most cases, our subconscious mind has negative programing regarding success, in other cases we don't feel deserving of success, or we don't want to deal with the responsibilities that comes along with it.

    The challenge in both cases:
Most people will deny the fear or are just not aware of it since its deep in the subconscious.

Randy is the best at helping you get rid of the fear!!!
I know since I went through it and his Midas Mentality was the answer for me...

  11. I protcastinate things related my time to be with my self, meditation, because y always think thta I have a lot of work, really i wish to give me more time to have a more intensive spiritual life

  12. I used to procrastinate because I was too busy working to realize I needed to slow down and get a life. I spent way to many years working 70 plus hours a weeking to slow down and develop relationships. I put off going back to school. I put off love, life, and laughter. Luckily I walked away from the rat race, found everything I ever wanted. Slowing down actually relieved the procrastination instinct.

  13. Ahhh, procrastination. There are prices and benefits to every action we take and every choice we make. Procrastination..well, the benefits are obvious...we don't have to 'deal' with whatever it is. The prices? Well, it depends.

Getting to the root of why we procrastinate or on what we procrastinate can get pretty deep, for sure. Fear? Sure, but of what?

The brain is a powerful organ. I was told in Al-Anon once fear stood for: False Experiences Appearing Real. We start to imagine what 'could' happen, what might happen, and so on, and the mind takes us on a flight of the worst outcomes possible.

Our breathing shallows, our eyes move rapidly, that familiar feeling comes to the pit of our stomach, and suddenly, within the blink of an eye, we have a reason to not do what is on our agenda for some sudden reason. Our breathing returns to normal, we calm down, and our bodies register that as good decision making.

When in reality, the action probably could have produced more benefits if we had just walked through that sensation. Our bodies would start to reprogram itself and, those symptoms of fight or flight would eventually calm down.

So, perhaps the question we need to ask ourselves is, 'what are the benefits of delaying this action, and what are the prices?'

Then, hopefully, the choice becomes a conscious one. 😉

  14. Unfortunately I procrastinate very often; more often than I take action in fact.

At 41, it's not something that I'll joke about. I have definitely missed out on important things in life because of it.

Procrastination is flat out awful in every way.

  15. I procrastinate mostly when I am not confident of my abilities, or fear rejection. I am in the role of my life, but I am afraid to have a door slammed in my face. I really have to perform a lot of self-talk to gain the confidence. What's a person to do?

  16. I feel bad when I procrastinate to do something, but I do it. I think our mind likes to do whatever it likes. but it is one of the main things that we can use in order to recognize if a person is a professional or an amateur ( a tourist):
a professional do his works whether he/she enjoys it or not, but an amateur ( a tourist) do his works whenever enjoys it.
    thanks for your lovely sentences.
    best regards.

  17. Sometimes its just finding the motivation to get something started...with adult ADHD it can sometimes be just as difficult finding the focus to stay with it and follow through. It always helps to have a wife who constantly pushes me to do better, get things started, and follow through with them till the finish!

Of course reading your posts on facebook, videos on you tube, and blobs on your site help me a lot too...

    THANKS!
