Do You Believe You’re Worthy?

Posted By: Randy GageFebruary 25, 2010

What a fascinating discussion on yesterday’s post and the day before about giving yourself the good things in life.  One of the fundamentalists called me an idiot on Twitter for suggesting such a thing.  But most of you understood the prosperity consciousness I was getting at.

So who are you saving that good china or silverware for anyway?  You expecting the Queen, or maybe Rod Stewart?  Of course the bigger question is this:  Why do you think that they deserve the good stuff, but you don’t?

Now don’t get me wrong.  I think it’s great if you have some family heirlooms that you save for special occasions.  I just hope that sometimes the special occasions are for YOU.

And that’s the real issue we’re talking about…

Sometimes you have to make a decision to buy something more expensive, even though you can’t logically justify it.  Sometimes you have to buy things just for you.  Even though you don’t “need” a thing, you make a conscious decision to give it to yourself anyway.

One of the examples I talked about was fresh flowers in your home.  I always keep some in my place.  It’s a prosperity thing.  Giving yourself a massage is another perfect example.  Not too many people actually “need” one, but if everyone in the world got a good massage once a week, there would be no war.

Some guys buy exotic cars and only drive them on sunny Sundays.  Not me.  If I wanted garage furniture, I’d buy a beanbag chair.  I want a joyride every time I turn the key.  The line between prosperity and lack, is knowing what to reward yourself with.

Do you realize that some people go their entire life and never get a massage from a professionally trained therapist?  Have never bought anything but “sensible” clothes?  They order from the right side of the menu.  Buy the brand they have the coupon for, and wouldn’t even think of an “extravagance” like king size, soft, thirsty towels.

They have been brought up to do the “sensible” thing, for everything.  Now some people have the opposite problem.  And that’s what we’ll discuss next post.

  1. I look forward to your next post because I kinda think I have that opposite problem.

Talking about massages, nothing better than a massage in Thailand, especially the foot massage.

I just wanted to say thanks for all of these posts because it has opened my mind.

  2. Excellent stuff Randy. Thank goodness you are here to make sure we don't fall asleep! Now I think I'll open that bottle of organic red wine we put away to have with our bacon sandwiches tonight! 🙂

P.S. The reason we are having bacon butties for dinner is because we treated ourselves to lunch by the ocean in one of the big hotels and then walked back home hand in hand feeling totally blissed out.

  3. I have two bunches of roses together - maybe 3 dozen in a vase... they look stunning...

And another vase of lilies that smell gorgeous...

Thanks to you - I try always to have a bunch of flowers blossoming love and worth into me.

They make me feel prosperous. I like that feeling a lot!

    Thanks gorgeous dude!

The other thing that makes me feel rich is having a tidy and clean home - I don't enjoy tidying and when I force myself - I feel like I'm a princess in a spacious lovely clear home... And when I burn some essential oils in a clean, tidy home, with blooming flowers and candles flickering I just feel delicious!

That clearing is a lot thanks to your insisting... Maybe insisting isn't the right word - encouraging and leading? 🙂

    Thanks...

  4. I think your right on Randy, most people were taught to do the "right thing" the "sensible thing" not to be extravagant.

I learned that most of the time the "sensible thing" is to really buy the better quality item in the first place and it usually ends up costing you less money and frustration in the end.

I appreciate you making us think, probe our thoughts, and look at why we do the things we do.

  5. line between prosperity and lack - that was a great saying. I always failed to buy the things i want for myself. and since last few years im practicing the awards for myself. and u know, its incredible feeling - the more i reward myself, the more im motivated to make more money and reward others too.

  6. I can't agree more with what you are trying to transfer to people. I am worth the good stuff. I deserve the exquisite things. I am a daughter of a King! ETC.....

Randy, please explain the difference in doing all of this while you practice delayed gratification. I see people on a daily basis "treating" themselves when they won't take care of their kids. Not poverty mentality, but rather self entitlement mentality & a totally displaced appropriation of their spending.

I set goals and then treat myself once they are achieved. It is a form of slight edge discipline. I have denied myself "things" not because I don't think I am worth it.....again....I AM WORTH IT! But...mainly to keep me in practice of serving others first & accomplishing greatness while not just settling for "GOOD".

    Thanks,

    G

  7. Thanks Randy for what you are attempting to transfer to others.
I believe I am TOTALLY worth the most exquisite things!

Randy, please explain the difference in feeling worthy vs practicing delayed gratification. I practice this on a daily basis. I set goals/treats. Once goals are accomplished, I TREAT! There is a difference in self entitlement mentality and this. I see it on a daily basis, as probably you do, people "treating" themselves royally while denying the responsibilities they have.

As a leader, in an effort to serve those I am responsible for, I practice slight edge disciplines to model & set the example. Please define that when you talk about deserving the best and being worthy as opposed to not over stepping the bounds of wealth thinking practices.

    As always.......thanks!

  8. Randy

I appreciate all the great advice and wisdom you bestow upon us on a regular basis. I believe I and my family are worthy of prosperity and abundance.

So I buy my wife roses for the dining room table. She makes a great dinner and pulls out the fine china and decorates.

    And then what happens?

You got it Rod Stewart shows up and drives away with her in his exotic sports care. But that's alright!

Now I have all the thirsty towels to myself. Is that selfish? (LOL)

    Gary McElwain

  9. I agree in all respects Randy, especially about the garage furniture. I'm planning on having several European luxury/sport cars soon and they will be driven all the time!

I reward myself regularly when it comes to things I enjoy like fine wines. I must admit I do not shop extravagantly since I'm in the early stages of entrepreneurship and need to be smart. That said, I'm doing a wine country trip next weekend, got a room in a nice hotel and will have lots of fun. And since I live only an hour away from the wine country this is not typical at all! I owe it to myself and deserve it!

    Thanks Randy.

  10. Hi Randy, great post as always. I approach this in my own life by analyzing things according to cost vs price. The price may be lower but what is the cost? Cost to my time, psyche, etc. Will buying cheaper actually cost me more later? Spending more for quality 1st often saves me immensely, both in the cost of replacing the cheap thing that broke as well as my time and aggravation. The most valuable commodity any of have is ourselves. We need to take time to take care of ourselves so we can continue to give to others!

  11. Randy,
After spending 7 years as a single mom with 2 small children, I had learned well how to make do, use it up and wear it out, compromise. It becomes a part of who you are, to sacrifice yourself so that your kids can eat.
I realized, not long ago, that I was still doing exactly that, even though I could afford better. Knowing better than most that today is all I really have (heart condition), I had 'everyday' dishes that I didn't enjoy using and the nice ones were used once a year, at best. I had beautiful objects that were put away to protect them. Little voices in my head (probably yours) told me that life was too short to not enjoy every minute and if I didn't appreciate myself, who would? So I had a yard sale and got rid of all the things that didn't thrill me or have special meaning. It was scary at first! Now we use the crystal dishes everyday and my special treasures have become useful additions to my decor. I get my hair styled by an expert instead of the cheapest I can find.
My husband asked me if I was putting away the money I get for our autistic son, to take care of him later. I told him no, that I was investing it in piano lessons, therapies and supplements so that he can be the best he can be NOW and possibly be able to be on his own someday.
Don't get me me wrong, I still love to bargain hunt but it is to find the best possible deal on the best possible products that make me and my family happy and healthy.
    Thanks for reminding us. 🙂

  12. Love the question that they need to ask themselves...

"Why do you think that they deserve the good stuff, but you don’t?"

That says it all and will make anyone with a brain rethink there programmed thoughts on the subject!

I also have to agree with you on the sunny day driving, although I am going to talk about winter driving. I bought a hummer because we get snow up here in the winter, and I want to be unstoppable in it, drive over snow hills, get out of the ditch without a tow truck, etc. I don't drive a car in the winter. As for the summer, I love speed, so I have a very fast motorcycle, no I do not want to drive the hummer in the summer, I want to go fast and feel free! And for all the conservatives, don't worry, when I say fast, I mean getting to 55 miles an hour as fast as possible, not driving 200mph hour down the highway.

  13. "Of course the bigger question is this: Why do you think that they deserve the good stuff, but you don’t?"

I believe how we were brought up affects our belief in our worthiness. How many of us have parents that saved the good china for special occasions? Did the treat guests special/differently than they treated us? Did this send us the message that we were not good enough? How is this affecting our lives now?

I believe if we become aware of our negative programming, we can change it. But we have to be willing to make the changes and let go of beliefs we have had since we were children. Some of those beliefs that came from our parents. Know that our parents loved us & did the best that they could but they may have unknowingly passed some negative beliefs onto us.

  14. Yes, I am worthy because SOMEONE loved me enough to create me and love me for who I am. Thanks, Randy. I like your posts very much. - S.

  15. Hi Randy,

I have always used everything that was ever given to me.

I had an uncle who used to buy expensive cars. He lived in row home which was nice but his car was always more expensive and beautiful than his home. He would never let anyone get in his car unless they took their shoes off. Needlesstosay I never got in his car.

I believe you should use everything you are given. My family and friends always teased me about using their gifts right away. My philosophy is "I use it right away, I might not be here tomorrow so I want to enjoy the gifts today, at this moment."

In 2005 I bought a red mustang--a gift I gave to myself for turning 45. As soon as I drove it off the lot I drove around to all of my friends so that they could go for a ride or drive it if they wanted.

All of our moments, all of our gifts should be used and shared. I don't believe any of us are here to suffer--we are all here to enjoy life and spread that around to everyone we meet.

    Don't save anything--use it--give it away--enjoy it.

  16. Thank you for reminding me, midst the hustle and bustle of raising a family, to take time out to live a little, and to do something I don't have a coupon for from time to time. It's good for my spirit, and good for the economy!

i agree whole heartedly about "The line between prosperity and lack, is knowing what to reward yourself with." and as a coach it is one of the hardest lessons to relay to a client that is experiencing success for the first time. with more things within their financial grasp like a young child in a candy store with 5 bucks burning a whole in their pocket....

(Please do me a favor and delete one of my posts....When I attempted the first post, it said the page didn't exist so.... I tried to re-write it!!)

    Thanks RG,

  22. Randy,
I couldn't agree more, but I didn't always think this way. About two months ago my business partner (my wife Renee) and I decided to get our first couples massage. It felt so good both physically and mentally that we decided to give to ourselves more often! We decided to put 1% of our sales into a slush fund to be used for extravagant things like this.

  23. I"M A CHEATER... and an addict.... LOL... hehehe

i cant step away from my lap top for too long... been reading and commenting on earlier posts even... hehehe i need help!!! hehehe

i am having a masseuse come over to my place in about 30 minutes and she also does shiatsu and foot massage... hehehe i cant wait till i get to bangkok tomorrow....

disclaimer: the previous message is not kitkat or soda induced... 😀

    love ya... peace out

  24. Sensible.... be nice at any cost... do not make waves ... encourage harmony...

Being a natural bull in a china shop I have always found the above smothering. I suspect the 'sensible' person has a set of voices imprinted from their early childhood and they are still afraid of upsetting their parents.

One of my favorite quotes, one that I read every day...

Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.

    Helen Keller

    Begin living an adventure!

  25. "The line between prosperity and lack, is knowing what to reward yourself with."

I think this means treating yourself well, but not going into debt (which is not treating yourself well.)

By creating vision boards we begin to manifest our dreams/thoughts but we have to be careful about not wanting it immediately if we can't afford it for ourselves or wanting to give things if we can't afford to give things to others. (for example, I know people who charge gifts who are in debt.) I don't think going deeper in debt is a reward.

I think we need to remember that God is our source & not become materialistic.

  26. Hi Randy,

This line in the article stood out from me: "The line between prosperity and lack, is knowing what to reward yourself with."
I had never thought of it this way and now I am beginning to understand the difference between the true meaning of prosperity and lack. It reminds me that most of us are not good receivers and do not really understand that we are worthy of the things that God has for us. When they show up in our lives we discount them or send them away. This is what came to mind from the words you shared. Thanks for stretching my mind and sharing this with us all.
    Make it a great day!
    God Bless,
    -ed

    22. Randy,
I couldn't agree more, but I didn't always think this way. About two months ago my business partner (my wife Renee) and I decided to get our first couples massage. It felt so good both physically and mentally that we decided to give to ourselves more often! We decided to put 1% of our sales into a slush fund to be used for extravagant things like this.

      God Bless,
      -ed
