Direct Your Thoughts

Posted By: Randy GageSeptember 22, 2011

We’ve talked a lot in this space about self-discipline.  What that really comes down to is controlling your thoughts…

If you don’t control your thoughts, you don't control your wants and needs.  Don’t control your wants and needs and you don’t control your actions.

Self-discipline is a balance…

It’s a balance between the logic of your brain and the emotions in your heart.  Self-discipline is the channel through which your innate power must flow.  You can let it wash out dissipated, or channel it like a fire hose.

You have the power of self-determination:  Direct your thoughts – control your destiny.

You up for that?

  1. Great post Randy! Love it! Highly agree with you on the principle of self-discipline and controlling our thoughts. If we don't control our thoughts, then they control us. We can't let that happen. We're better and stronger than that.

Thanks for the inspiration and YES! Definitely up for this! Keep it up man! 😀

  3. Christ, as a human being, did not start out perfect. He was perfected by his trials, sufferings and experiences. He brought every thought into submission to His Father's will/plan.
I am learning to make a plan, align my beliefs with this plan and then cultivate/bring into submission my thoughts to achieve this destiny.
I have an intelligent brain and a wild heart, together they should create a fabulous ride, a life worth the living.
    Bless you.

  4. I also agree. This is in many ways no different than the self discipline required for fitness, eating right and other lifestyle interests. And like anything worthwhile, it takes work.

His Holiness, the Dalai Lama tells us that before and after Enlightenment the work continues at the same level. It's ongoing and with it comes the benefits of living a Life we love.

We always get 'curve balls' in life, but how we respond to them is directly connected to how we manage our thoughts. And it takes focus and diligence, but the benefits are great.

Thanks for yet another great reminder Randy!

  5. "You up for that?"

Yes, but I still suck at it. There's a new book called "Willpower" that will hopefully be the answer to my undisciplined prayers. It runs hand in hand with keeping busy...left to my own thoughts too much I get lost in useless daydreaming or loneliness. I need to work on that!

  6. That´s a tough one!! It really is. Good post, Randy. I´ve once been there, but that was in strong cooperation with doctors. I think, practicing this for oneself, without anyone controlling "it", yes, that sure demands a lot of self-discipline or, alternatively as a trigger, it asks for a situation one really has to turn away from so that the thought-control runs on a certain "automatic". And right here I figure, I´ve been there as well. So, I should keep-up with my old thought"ful"-successes! Thanks for the reminder - enjoy your day!

  7. I love this post Randy.
Self discipline is a lifetime work in my opinion. And doesn't be a desperate fight to control every thought , situation or person. It's more a matter of being aware of the connection with a higher power and express it in everything you are, say and do.
We all want to find and remain in that "sweet spot" where everything is flows easily. Finding balance it's again a matter of directing your whole being in this direction.
The character is the same thing with your destiny.Who are the character makers? We are.. every single day 🙂
So far, directing my thoughts and actions to a balance it's the best thing I experienced. When you define clearly what balance means for you it will be easier to overcome everything and gain clarity.

Thanks for your teachings! I always enjoy reading your posts 🙂

    Peace,
    Radu

    1. Thank you, Radu - thank you Randy. 'Control your thoughts' challenges me (always a good thing). But my skewed version of that has me wearing a police uniform (not a good look). 'Continually refocus' - as in those early days of learning to meditate - gives me a clear direction. Continually refocusing on the light, on love, on something beautiful - that helps me feel stronger, grateful, positive, confident. Is that what you mean Randy?

  8. Hi RG,

Direct your thoughts to direct your life.

Follow this idea. Subscribe to it. It takes discipline to live out this idea. Mental laziness tends to take root, and many are swayed by desires not in harmony with the definite major purpose. Like, watching TV for 30 minutes a night instead of reading a personal development book. You could have released on the "I will watch TV" thought in an instant, but your lack of discipline in identifying and releasing this thought, and replacing with the personal develop time thought, brought the low energy outcome.

Be vigilant in watching your thoughts. Eventually, directing your thoughts toward a specific, high energy end becomes habitual.

    Thanks!

    Ryan

  9. Hey Randy,

    I don't completely agree.

In one of your videos you recommended a book to read called "Everyday Enlightenment" by Dan Millman.
I read the book and he talks about that our thoughts have a "mind" on their own and we are not responsible for all those obsessive thoughts that rushing through our mind.
But what we can do is to try to manipulate them in a positive way (direct them whatever ends we like) until it becomes second nature for us (and for our mind:) )
    cheers!

  10. I like the 'channeled like a fire hose' analogy. Excellent Randy! This is probably the area of self-discipline where I fall over the easiest. For some reason physical discipline seems easier to me. I think I need to apply the same attitude to the mental as to the physical.

  11. Great post as always! This is a really hard one but will make all the difference in the world once it becomes a habitual thing. Thanks for the reminder, it's well needed!

  12. Hello Randy!
I just experienced how powerful it is to be able to control your thoughts!!! Sometimes you are thrown challenges, where you think "OK - that's it, I throw in the towel" I got one of those yesterday (it's a challenge I off cource created myself a couple of years back - made a wrong descision then, that I "PAY FOR" today). Then I thought of a quote from you, that you are the creater of your thoughts, a topic I've been practising for a while, and I actually managed to do so, not being effect of "old thoughts". That really made my day :)))))))))))). It's so powerful to be able to do so.
Most greatful for this Randy - Thank's
    Lene
