Dealing with Adversity

Posted By: Randy GageOctober 25, 2012

One thing you can count on if you want to be a leader in any field:  sports, the arts, business or anything else.  You will face some challenges and adversity.  Some will be threatened by you.  Don’t be deterred by this.

In fact, know this:  If you really are doing something worthy, you're going to piss some people off.  And if you're not pissing some people off, you're probably mired in mediocrity.

Know the difference between the people who care about you and want the best for you - and those that have petty jealousy and would tear you down.  And process the feedback accordingly.

One more thing to know:  Real leaders are like kites.  A headwind takes them higher.

  1. Yeah, I experienced this recently. I was being bullied by my boss. My mentors and professional acquaintances told me that my boss must have been feeling threatened by me. It was a horrible experience. Just recently my boss did me the favour of making me redundant. I got a pay-out and was in the process of final interviews for another position when it happened. I asked the universe to make me redundant just as I was getting another job. It worked beautifully! I have been telling myself over and over again that I'm a good person. The recovery is taking a little while. I'm noticing that I sometimes I think back over those negative experiences just as a way to beat myself up, but at least I realise what I'm doing and I can switch my thinking as soon as I notice.

    1. @carmen161595 Many of these people  are just self-centered and obsessed with safety, status, being right, knowing it all, and believe they are owed their position; and no one else deserves success. This attitude is excusable in a child or someone with a disability impairing their cognition, but not in an adult.Their own egos are not strong enough. They see the world as a zero sum game, where someone has to be the winner, and someone, the loser. We're supposed to live in a free market, and free markets are supposed to be win-win.I was raised by people like that. An attitude like that can lead to all sorts of abusive, anti-human behavior. I've spent most of my adult life growing from it. I've always had an interest in music. Since a formal University education, especially within the arts was not valued (Union jobs,a trade and military service were the options I was given, even though they had the resources to help pay for a University education) by my family, I have learned to teach myself music composition and the technical, production aspects.I'm 31 now, and I will admit it is a bit scary. I've decided to focus on electronic music- the likes of Armin VanBuren, Deadmau5, and Skrillex. I will admit I feel intimidated, especially since much of modern music is driven by the purchases of people under 25.

  4. Most people follow the crowd but to be successful we must stop being average and that comes with facing adversity.  Thanks for the post.
