Dancing with Uncertainty

Posted By: Randy GageOctober 7, 2018

When I wrote Risky Is the New Safe, it spoke to many people on an emotional level.  They really connected with the concept that not taking chances was actually quite risky, and that being willing to risk something, was actually safer in the long term.

To live a prosperous life, you have to drill down yet one more level.  Because you have to also stop chasing certainty in your life.

We want to be sure of everything: who is going to win the Red Sox/Yankees series, what the weather is going to be, the results of the next election, whether our stock portfolio is going to go up, and every other possible outcome, small and grand.

Remember the quaint idea of a blind date?  Can you imagine that happening now?  Today, most people expect a mobile app to reveal the candidate’s stats, habits, preferences, and fetishes – and provide naked pictures for approval – before they even agree for the first meeting.

There are three problems with demanding certainty in your life…

Number one, it simply isn’t possible.  None of us really knows what our destiny is.  You could go down in a plane crash tomorrow, or take a nap this afternoon and never wake up.  Trying to control outcomes that you have no control over is quite frustrating.

Number two, chasing certainly creates a fear-based consciousness.  You always end up trying to protect yourself against all bad things and negative outcomes.  So instead of living to win, you’re trying not to lose.  There’s not much prosperity in that.

And finally, and perhaps most importantly, looking for certainty limits you from experiencing so much in life.

There is so much mystery, mystique, and magic in uncertainty.  The more you’re willing to dance with uncertainty, the more anticipation, wonder, and adventure you allow into your life.

So how you doing on that?

  1. Great.

So many times we are looking for perfect life instead live the life we have.

I remember around 25 years ago when I thought about to start my consulting engineering company. I took a taxi to commerce chamber to register the company. When I get down in that place, and paid the Taxi, I closed the door. Looked to the door of the office I was going... and... turn around me and say to the taxi driver... "hey sir... please ... do me a favor... take me home again please".

Come back home, and only until after 5 years more I took the decision to start the company again.

The true was, I felt to much fear to jump to the vacuum because I didn't now what are the results I could expect in that moment.

    But why this story??

Because, Randy correctly point on the second issue, that we create a fear-based consciousness.

For You, who is reading this post... want to know something?: that story affected much of my life because that fear-based consciousness I seed from this moment had delayed many of my dreams. And, only until the moment I discovered this and started to work on me to change that believes, I feel the power to see a better way for me.

My teaching from this experience was:

" Do it, even if you don't know the result "

    From Cali, Colombia..

    1. Yep. Quite often we need to have balls to do things even without having a clue what's waiting for us along the way. Thanks for such an enlightening story!

  2. I am certain. I don't have to chase certainty. Eternall life. Heaven. Love.

You can only be certain when you believe. Not all beliefs are certain.

  3. I met Prince Charming yesterday. He actually went to school to become Prince Charming. Are you waiting for Prince Charming?

No, I am not waiting for Prince Charming. I don’t need someone to put a glass slipper on my foot or kiss me to go are me up.

There are people who need assistance putting on shoes, clothes, etc. There are also people who think someone else will get them into heaven.

I think this belief is disabling and disempowering people. I think people are learning this and also not to try, not to fight back.

That is what we have to do. We need to change our beliefs and empower ourselves. We were born living ours loves and others. We can learn it again.

    Blessed are the _______.

    What did you say?

Question what we have been told and believe. I don’t think somethings we think are what God or Jesus said.

Change your beliefs to loving and kind beliefs. Being poor is not kind. Being poor in Spirit is not kind.

Be kind to yourself and others.

Be aware of the deadly beliefs and change yours. Avoid religions with deadly beliefs.

My certainty does not come from Jesus. I had to change my beliefs.
