Conflicting Beliefs

Posted By: Randy GageFebruary 28, 2012

Last post we talked about the three kinds of cycles and how they are created by the kind of vision you have.  Now let’s go yet one level deeper…

The final component for actually achieving and manifesting your vision is your core foundational beliefs.

When people set goals and have a bold vision – but don’t achieve their goals – it’s because they don’t believe in them.  Or more specifically, while they believe in them on a conscious level – they have conflicting beliefs on the subconscious level.

When this comes into play is when you set a goal that sounds great on the surface – but it conflicts with subconscious beliefs you have.  Beliefs that you may not even be aware of.

So you set a goal to make $100,000 this year.  But what if you grew up idolizing your father who worked in the coalmines of West Virginia.  He was the salt of the earth and worked 12 hours a day to provide for his family.  On his best year ever, he made $25,000.  Do you realize that you could have a subconscious belief that to earn more than he did – would be an insult to him?

Now of course this is irrational and he certainly wouldn’t feel this way.  He would be proud to see you succeed.  But we have irrational beliefs colored by emotion all the time.

Let’s say your goal is to earn $200,000 a year.  But you have been raised in a strict religious household and taught that you are born a sorry sinner.  You’ve been programmed that it is spiritual to be poor, and your reward will come in the afterlife – after you do your penance here.

You want the $200,000 on the conscious level.  But your subconscious mind will tell you that to reach that goal you must forsake God.

And when the conscious mind and the subconscious mind have a conflict – the subconscious mind always wins.

Most people slough off what I’m talking about, certain that it doesn't apply to them.  They say something like, “Of course I want to be rich.  I hate being poor.”

But that may not be true…

As most of you know, I grew up poor.  I hated it.  I swore that when I grew up, I would be rich.  But something else was happening along the way…

The more I saw other kids from wealthy families, the more I learned of rich people on TV, the more jealous I became.  I came to hate rich people.

So when I grew up and tried to become one – which I would have insisted was what I wanted to do – I always ended up self-sabotaging myself.

Why?

Because on the conscious level I wanted to be wealthy.  But the problem was I had a foundational belief that rich people were bad.  Another core belief I had was that wealthy people took advantage of others to get rich.   Consciously, I wanted to be rich.  Subconsciously, I didn’t want to be a bad person and take advantage of others.  You can figure out what happened…

So what about you?

Do you have goals that you aren’t achieving?  If so, is it possible that you have a core foundational belief that is causing you to sabotage your success?

Take a look at the new episode of Prosperity TV.  Then please share your thoughts below.

  1. To change your subconsious mind is hard work, you almost have to isolate you in order to reprogram your subconsious mind. Today i have books with me at work and i listen to unity radio at my phone

  3. I think i do not have these conflicts like 'rich people are bad people'. I also am an atheist, so are my family and friends. So i realy do not think its spiritual to be poor. I must say that i sometimes hear 'if you have a lot of money, i dont mean you are happy' but i never agree with those people, even when i was a child. But i failed in school, i get this f*cked up job. So i know im not going to be rich doing this. so i thought mlm would save me. But i failed again. And still to this day i'm not rich. Whats my problem ?

    1.  @million dollar Atheists have worthiness issues too, just as religious people.  They come more from pop culture, but they can still be there.  You may want to work every morning 30 minutes on positive self-development work to raise your consciousness.  Maybe watch a video on Prosperity TV every morning for 60 days straight as well:  http://www.youtube.com/randygage  - RG

  5. All is simple. When my subconsciousness sabotages, I speak to it: the guy, we will go we will look, what speaks about it RG?
    Thanks, Randy!

  7. I agree that Fear of Success is probably a greater fear. I think I have that at times but keep trying to program my mind differently. This year I used Windows Movie Maker (free on your Windows program) and made my own movie for goals in 2012. I watch it every day and it has made a huge difference in two months!

  9. The auto captions are making mumbo jumbo out of your words but I can lipread you pretty well. Fear of success, hmmm...  figuring out what's holding me back!  What does it cost to hire you as a therapist for a day? 😉

  11. Okay, how did you get inside my head? Seriously. This is ultra weird. You are saying the exact things I have been saying to myself - as recently as yesterday - and even blogging about. Only for me, they are a epiphanies. So wonderful to hear the affirmation that I am on the right track. Yes, I have had conflicting beliefs - based on where I was raised and what I "know" versus what I am now learning. And it has been very hard to kill the old beliefs. One day at a time. Starting with being aware of where my doubt is coming from. But I'm getting there. Once I started telling myself that those beliefs simply aren't truth - I started cutting the strings and flying higher. Still some strings left. Still closer to ground than I want to be. But higher than I used to be. And less afraid. I was just saying to a friend and co-collaborator on a new project - if this idea fails, what is the worst that could happen - and we both saw that the worst was nothing - and that the worst thing happening was definitely worth it if the best thing happened, or even the second best. Thank you Randy. You've got my day off to a good start. Now let me share this so we can get the others off to a good start too.

  14. Interesting blog post -
    Interesting video topic -
I don't kinow which topic to comment on, Fear o' Failure or Hidden Beliefs.

I do agree that while F of F may be the "surface" issue, Hidden Beliefs underlie it.
Nice job of clearing the surface.
I'll look forward going deeper into Hidden B-s with the next video.  Getting 'em un-hid is the tricky bit!

With the limiting subconsious beliefs, I find most people choose not to indulge themselves often enough to be effective manifesters.  You do a really great job of pointing out the need for re-programming!

  19. I jump-in for others today:
what I noticed lately is the reason why people don´t reach their goals is - that´s they have trouble defining it/them and therefore don´t know how to get there. Fear can be a hurdle of it when not knowing, but I know some people who really want to go-on but --> have trouble with the "how".
If I know "how" i just do it. Knowledge/education takes away fear.

Plus the fear of success might include the "no daily training" of handling (suddenly) much money. It can also be a fear hurdle, a subconscious one. Say, did you ever get to that point in your conversations?

  21. Man @Randy_Gage , you summed up my life beautifully in this article! I had many of the same self-sabotaging beliefs about wealth, rich people, and money. A lot of which came from growing up within a strict Pentecostal background. I've since learned my own truths and have had to separate what I was taught about wealth from the reality of wealth. Not everyone who obtains wealth is evil. Money is not evil! There are plenty of people that reach that point in their lives by helping others... you and a few others I'm connected with are perfect examples of that for me. I know now that I will reach that point myself, sooner than later. I had to make some serious changes in how I go about looking at wealth, and it started with changing my mental mindset. I have a goal set for myself to make $150,000 this year. Right now, it looks impossible, but I'm not going by what it looks like; I know what I'm worth! And although I'm worth more than $150,000, I also have to be very realistic with my goals. Growing up in a welfare household and with a welfare mentality, I believe with all my heart that my struggles growing up is my fuel to make it happen now. And when this happens, you my friend, will be one of the first peeps I share the news with. Thank you for this awesome sharpening article, Randy! I've said it once, and I'll keep singing how great you are... YOU ROCK MAN!!!!!

  23. Interesting post, and nicely written. We come from similar angles on this (in terms of coaching), with some slight differences in language. For example, I call the subconscious, the "less-conscious," because in my experience, it is not really "sub," it is more like a routine background program on the computer. Program it, and it does it's job 24/7, and nothing changes until you open up  your "Preferences" or "Properties" dialog box and challenge a belief or assumption, LOL.

And that brings up another minor difference between us. Those "foundational beliefs" you refer to... I call them assumptions. I like to tell clients that thoughts held over time become beliefs; beliefs held over time become facts; and facts held over time become assumptions. The problem with assumptions is that we rarely consciously (and with presence and focus) ever challenge them. Why would we? There are in our background programming humming away so that we don't have to more mental work than we have to. Well, (Doh!), if something is not working well for us in life, that's a pretty good reason to take a look in there. Set a new background program, let 'er rip!

    My compliments...

  25. So true Randy. I have been studying subconscious beliefs a lot recently and have had to do some "reprogramming" to reach the goals that I want to achieve. Basically, we live according to our beliefs. So our beliefs need to be congruent with that which we want.

  27. I think that core beliefs are formed from our history... our experiences that have "taught" us what to expect, and what to dream, and what to never even imagine could be.  I wonder how much of this belief is from our personal history, things that have actually happened to us repeatedly that make us believe it will happen again... and how much is from our collective history as humans (Jung's collective unconscious).  And even on a biological level, how much is genetic?

The point in any case is that every day we have the ability to "decide" whether or not we will make a change in those self-beliefs, whatever has conditioned them.  This is a simple process.  It's easy to decide to reprogram ourselves, and it's pretty easy to begin a re-training process in meditation or affirmation or whatever.  What IS difficult (like with anything), is persevering and refusing to get off track.  That means consistent effort, and most of us are only too anxious to jump back to the comfort of familiar failure patterns, than keep moving steadily forward into the unknown territory of success.

  29. While I agree with you Randy, I think you present the diagnosis and no cure. It's easy to say to people, just change your beliefs. The problem with this sort of thing is that it keeps most people in a state of always analyzing what's wrong, why they're not getting what they want, hence putting themselves in perpetual frustration and limbo. How exactly do you suggest people heal these memes as you call them?

I know you've said "you can't be treated for prosperity". Great. I guess it's the same as saying you can't be treated for great health. But we all know there are very simple things one can do to achieve great health. Why then is financial prosperity the rocket science here?

  31. This is so true. It used to happen to me. For me, life is to be fun. And whenever I wanted to expand my business, it became not fun anymore. Then I crashed. Finally I found out this underlying belief, and make that shift to business can be fun too. Things start to pick up since then!
