Choosing to Change

Posted By: Randy GageMay 8, 2012

We were in the Grand Ballroom of the Sheraton on the Park, in Sydney, Australia.  900 cheering, positive people and me.  I had just finished doing a presentation and was signing books and shaking hands at the back of the room.

I had talked about mindset, business opportunity and dreams.  How I went from a dishwasher to a multimillionaire, and how the people in the room could do the same.  The music was blaring, people were still mingling around, and then he came…

The dictionary guy.

He stood around, hovering and fidgeting.  Finally he worked his way up to me, holding a pocket sized, dime store dictionary, which he was fondling nervously.   He reminded me that during the session, I had splashed water into the audience.  He opened the dictionary to a page that had received a droplet or two, and explained that he had bought the dictionary for his mother.  And now he didn’t know how he could give it to her.

I laughed, assuming that he wanted to keep it as a souvenir or was making a joke.  He wasn’t.

He pulled a receipt out of his pocket, and again stated mumbling about how he could give his mother a dictionary that had had water splashed on it.  I reached in my pocket and handed him a $50 bill and  took the dictionary from him.  “I’m buying it from you,” I declared.  Then I threw it into the garbage behind me.

“Don't you want the receipt?” he whined.

“No I don’t need it.  Goodbye,” I replied.  And turned away to sign some more books.  My friends told me later that he went back and took the book out of the garbage before he slunk off.

He thought he scored big time.  He got $50 for a $5 book.  But he had no idea of the greater riches he left behind…

Now in the past I would have talked about what a moron he was.  I’d like to think I’ve moved past that stage now.  And can recognize he is just another person who bought into all the limiting beliefs swirling around him.  One of literally dozens you can interact with on any given day.

In that room on that night, he was probably outnumbered 890 to ten.  It was a room full of dreamers – positive, success-oriented people working for a better life.  And they understand that this is accomplished by self-development and personal growth.

The dictionary guy is trying to cheat the system.  He wants the good things in life, but he’s not willing to put out the effort.  Of course he will fail, and unless he changes, he will be broke his whole life.  But he will have lots of company...

Because outside of that ballroom at the Sheraton – he’s got a much bigger team than you and I do.  That night we had a 90% edge.  But in the “real world,” those percentages are reversed!  In normal society, you and I are the aberration, the weirdos.

Now the interesting thing is this...

His team will always outnumber us, but we will always win the match.  Because we live our lives in accord with universal laws.  Whereas the herd is looking for the short cut; always trying another angle to get something for nothing.

Here’s the really good news…

I used to be in that other group.  And maybe you were too.  But all of us – even the dictionay guy – can choose to change.

Ain’t it great!

- RG

  1. Hey Randy...REALLY interesting story about this guy.  What I find amazing is not that there are guys like this out there...but that a guy with that mindset CAME TO YOUR MEETING...and probably PAID to be there and yet THAT was his takeaway?  Sheesh.

  3. I love this story Randy. It really highlights the limited thinking so many people have. And yes, they do believe they are 'winning' in the game of life when in fact they are slinking further and further behind. What I have found difficult is to get people like this to see the reality of where they're at. Help them understand that their thinking does not serve them in the best way. Now that takes a lot of work...I'm glad you're doing a great job at it!

  5. I think it also paints a picture of those that react rather than respond. What I find is that people that respond tend to think first and THEN speak. Those that are reactive have a 'knee jerk' thing going on where they're on the attack without even thinking if what they're saying serves their higher purpose.

But that's just me 🙂 And yes, I'm human and make errors too, but I believe it's called BEING human, LOL.

  7.  @Randy_Gage You have to wonder how big of a step this guy made just to come to your event. Maybe it was the first of many steps. Yes, he has a long way to go, but any step in the right direction is a good step. Good on him for putting himself outside of his comfort zone and growing, perhaps if it was just a tiny bit!

  9. RG,
Great post and I would have had you autograph the water stained page and then handed it to Mommy Dearest...
I was wondering if you have ever spoken about when you were going through transition from dishwasher to millionaire. What did you do before you were a teacher ( I wanted to put guru because it rhymes).
What did you say to people? What kind of work did you do prior to Randy Gage .com started.
    Thanks for sharing with us.

Hey Randy, as another follow up to this point, you have also mentioned that real estate has been a great avenue to build wealth for you. I remember reading something where you suggested to build a large NM income and invest half of that into real estate. Even though the market is beaten down, I still believe there is great opportunity there. Mind giving any insight or feedback on what your thoughts are currently on real estate investing/wealth building? Thanks.

  11. It absolutely is, my friend!! Thank you for sharing that experience with us, Randy. My mentor once told me, "You can only be hurt by what you don't know about yourself. Wherever you go, notice your sly stunts and hidden motives to stay as you always have been." Those words have been the glue that has kept me constantly seeking change within myself. I would see a lot of this very behavior around me growing up, and when I went off to the Navy after high school; the minute I came back it would happen to me again, and again. I didn't care for it when it was done to me, and unfortunately, I didn't handle it as well. Perhaps, if I would have looked at it from this angle, I would be closer to my goal than I am today. Something to think about, that's for sure! Thanks for the sharpening, Randy!

  13. Randy, on your journey from dishwasher to multimillionaire were there ever times where you thought you`d never make it, that you were just fooling yourself? Where your riches and all the good stuff just seemed too far away?

  17. Randy, that man was rude to you.   You know it is insulting to give a good performance and have someone denigrate it by making a cause out of something trivial.

However, here is the problem you PAID him for being a jack ass.  You gave him fifty bucks for an insult. DON"T do that.  He may not change now, he got rewarded for his bad behavior.  Next time say, "Sorry about your dictionary, but I will not be paying for that, NO Way!  Then you have made a statement to him that you won't put up with that, and you did it with respect for yourself and dictionary man.

You know I have been thinking about you and my behavior on this website, and I have to say, I have been horrible.  I am so sorry, but you know what, you use to reward me for my bad behavior sometimes too.

I remember this button I got when I volunteered it said "Volunteer because Change is Possible".  That has been one of the most powerful messages in my life.  Even when I have done things I am not proud of, like some of the posts I have written to you, I know that even though I have to pay my consequences, I can still change and be better.

Randy, remember this.  There is no us and them, we are all in this together.  🙂  Much love to you Mr. Randy.

  19. Gosh - I missed THAT rare scenery!?!?!?! Too bad.
You make me laugh with this story - - - LOL! ! !
It amuses me even when only reading since my fantasy offers a short comic strip of it - still, I am smiling and have to add pls.:

    - I would have  done almost the same, just would have ripped that old dictionary apart, in 100.000 pieces to kill his win
    - would have offered him maybe only 3 bucks (in my current situation only, I guess) ´cuz it was splashed and he didn´t watch out (!!)
    - would have told him in return to buy I bigger dictionary so that he has MORE to learn now  ;))
    - maybe I would have splashed the 50 bucks bill with water, only to see his face....

I had a similar scene some months ago at work were a co-worker from wealthy parents (!!!) lamented he has to watch out for paying correct car tax when changing cars soon in spring, meant: the day he quits one car/license should be the same day to register the new car.
ONLY to not pay too much!!   ....what does 2 days in parallel cost anyway?
So I kindly asked him whether I can give him 5 EUR as a gift to not worry about the exact day...? Said, I´d do it right away.
He left his desk behind me and called his friend who sat in front of me who then talked with him about it. the guy who left was insecure if he decided right or not..... Good Lord, get me out of here!!!
    - his friend became my friend, he´s on my side but he talked to him to state that he did RIGHT.
Sorry, had to drop it here - -  so matching! 😉

  25. The only thing I would add to this story is that "choosing to change" is an ongoing, never-ending process. We strong dislike the "guy with the dictionary" because we know--and dislike--that part in ourselves that believes we've received the short end of the stick and tries to get even by milking the system. Of course we would never do what he did, but in what other area are we still trying to milk the system, get even, or take advantage of a situation? Instead of seeing the dictionary guy "in that other group," we can ask, "what part of me is still even a little like that guy?"

  27. Randy, for me it's about change. You know the saying? "You can take the kid out of Da Bronx. But You can't take Da Bronx out of the kid." Well today because of my constant vigilance to change and with Amazing Grace. I've been able to take "The Bronx out of the Man."

  29. My question is, if it was a gift for his mother, what was it doing out? Had he bought it that day? Why was he using it when it was a present? It's his fault it got water on it, not yours. Lucky he didn't buy her the Mona Lisa.

I remember this button I got when I volunteered it said "Volunteer because Change is Possible".  That has been one of the most powerful messages in my life.  Even when I have done things I am not proud of, like some of the posts I have written to you, I know that even though I have to pay my consequences, I can still change and be better.

    21. Instead of capitalizing on getting signatures from influential people, I hope this man learns to be an influential person.

    23.  @Randy_Gage Life can be scary. I am facing a great deal of uncertainty myself, but I'm exercising, eating better, and cutting caffeine.90% of what people worry about doesn't matter.Fear will always be present, but we can acknowledge it, make it less powerful, or even use it to empower us.

    24. @Randy_Gage @Jim Story
Thanks.
