The Choices of Money

Posted By: Randy GageJanuary 18, 2015

In a recent post, I told you my sabbatical was the most transformative growth experience I’ve ever been through. It’s important to note that I would never had such an extraordinary opportunity if I hadn’t gotten the money thing out of the way.

Maybe the most significant thing lost in all the misguided talk about whether money is evil, is the key benefit money offers you: choices.

Money and material things don’t buy happiness, but neither does poverty. What money does is give you choices. Some of those choices will likely be material things, charitable giving, security, and independence. Those choices are your self-expression, which is a huge part of happiness. It’s hard to be happy (express yourself) when you’re struggling to pay the rent or buy groceries.

If you have the belief that money doesn’t buy happiness, better to lose that belief and replace it with one that serves you better. One of the important steps to a fulfilling life, is getting the money thing out of the way.

  1. Dear Randy, I think we have a connection in the spirit. I was thinking about this very thing yesterday. I was pondering on this whole concept of taking a sabbatical like you did, and I concluded that there is just no way you could have done this, for this long (I was almost 2 years) without the benefit of having passive income streams. I aspire to get to that point in the nearest future. Thanks for your inspirational posts.

  2. When you mentioned Desire in a previous post, for some like myself, the desire that's at the root of motivation to do, be and have more is connected to money. I suspect the challenge for most of us, myself included, is CLEARING the lack thinking we were taught as children. I work diligently at an abundance mindset but still find myself bargain hunting. Money is Joy, Power, Security and FUN and I embrace all it brings to Life now!

  3. True, but it's the one where most people have the most problems with.

But isn't it about developing yourself, taking risks and working hard ?

  4. Randy,
"Money and material things don’t buy happiness, but neither does prosperity." I guess you meant "Poverty" instead of prosperity.
    Thanks for the reminder.

I think because of the dysfunctional relationship that most people have with money, they will dispel it as, "Oh there are more important things than money." as this will be true in regard to the way that you handle people and those around you, you can always do more good with money then you can without. Money is a "by product" of the value that you provide.
And those who have a generous soul can do more with money than without.

  6. I believe money is God in motion. as an example  you know you can help the homeless by donating your time at the shelter or you can be the one building the homeless shelters... it's not only options but leverage. Thanks

  7. SLindstrom Well, when it really comes down to it, money is more important than God is to most people.  As far as the motion part, I believe you're putting your own personal spin on it.

  8. It is amazing how many people have the "desire" to have money yet criticize and condemn people that are wealth, yet all at the same time hate that they are broke and have no choice in the matter. Ever notice the bad guy in movies is typically the big wealthy "A-hole" who takes advantage of the so called less fortunate while it's is thee Robin Hood type "hero" that stands up to the million/billionaire villan. It's crazy how typical society has learned to discredit and hate the wealthy. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer and the poor blame the wealthy while at the same time stacking up tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt buying things they want but don't need to impress people they don't know for a temporary feeling of false satisfaction.
I'm glad I learned that lesson when I did from Mr Gage before I got even more out of hand. After 12 years in the Marine Corps, 3 overseas combat deployments and and tens of thousands of dollars earned and waisted I am still working to dig myself out of the hole I created. The learning that has come from it and from following Mr. Gage's messages, videos, blogs, books, and countless posts have made it an awesome journey of self improvement.
Thanks for everything randy, see you on the far side of success!

  9. As long as you hold the blueprint that "Money doesn't buy happiness", no matter what you will do, you will never be rich!
If you have young children and you love them, make sure that you never ever tell  them that Money doesn't buy happiness/ Money is not important/ Rich people are exploiters' etc.
Thank you Randy for this awesome insight!
    Bless you 🙂
