Changing Your Programming

Posted By: Randy GageOctober 11, 2011

I was on the phone with a close friend last night.  He was asking about a mutual friend we have.  “He’s been exposed to you a lot,” he said.  “Why do you think he keeps sabotaging himself?”

“You know what?”  I replied, “He really hasn’t been that exposed to me.  He’s been to three or four of my seminars.  So he spends five or six hours with me once a year, then he goes back to thousands of hour’s worth of counter programming.  He never had a chance.”

And that’s a shame.

The guy we’re talking about has been working hard to succeed in a variety of different businesses for the last ten years.  And I mean he words hard.  And means well.  And he wouldn’t intentionally hurt a flea.

Yet I’ve seen him crash and burn four times in that time span.  The latest meltdown was a few weeks ago.  And he is a bright guy.  Universally well liked, and he never stole a freight train.

So why does he keep failing?

Two things come to mind, and they’re both relevant to the work we do here.  They both are a big part of your mindset, and the kind of changes you have to make in it to move from victim to victor.

The first problem with my friend is that he refuses to live by a universal law of prosperity.  That is the concept of trading value for value.  Or put another way, the only free cheese is in the mousetrap.

Like a lot of people today, he has an entitlement mindset.  He sees that he is struggling and others are not.  So he thinks it’s only fair that they should somehow provide for his advancement.

So he is continually aligning in business relationships with people who have more resources than he does.  Each of these arrangements is supposed to enrich both parties, but they always end up coming up short.  There is always just enough to pay his expenses, but nothing left for the other partners.

Now he doesn’t do this maliciously, or deceptively – or even consciously.  He just always comes up a little short and he regales you with his tales of woe.  And you look into his big brown eyes and you suggest that you will give up your profit if it will help him out.

Or at least that’s what I did…

The first time.  So I naturally thought that being his patron saint the first time around, he would work to ensure that I was taken care of in round two.

That was a $25,000 lesson for me.  One that I don’t need to learn any more, thank you very much.  But this isn’t about me.  The subject was why this individual keeps snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

And that goes back to another issue we’ve talked abut a lot…

Self sabotage.  Now this guy certainly doesn’t see it that way.  He sees it as a whole chain of unlucky outside circumstances.  He blames the economy, his partners and other external factors.  He is certain that he wants to be successful, so the possibility that he could actually be sabotaging his own success doesn’t even occur to him.  And if you were to suggest it, he would brush it off without so much as a cursory thought.

Like most people – he evaluates everything about himself based on the evidence of his conscious mind.

And what a foolish mistake that is.  Do you really get that?  Millions of people self sabotage themselves daily.  And most of them are not even aware of it.

Their rational, logical conscious mind tells them that they want to be healthy, happy and prosperous.  Let’s face it.  Who wouldn’t?

But then why are so many people sick, depressed and broke?

Because on a subconscious level – they don’t believe they are worthy.  Their church, temple or synagogue programmed them that they were a worm by the time they were eight years old.  Their parents got divorced when they were ten and they thought it was their fault.  Perhaps their father worked ten hours a day in a tough manual labor job, and now they feel guilty for earning more money than he did.  And don’t get me started again on the media.  But you can safely assume that they were completely brainwashed by the media by the time they were ten years old.

They have subconscious programming that:

  • Rich people are pompous, conniving and dishonest;
  • Poor people are the salt of the earth; and,
  • It is somehow noble, decent, and spiritual to be poor.

Now like my friend I described earlier, you may have attended a couple seminars of mine, read some positive books and set goals for positive outcomes.

But do you know how many thousands of hours of counter-programming you are still receiving?

Are you really screening the books you read?  Did you eliminate the news outlets?  Have you stopped watching 90% of the shows on television?  Did you eliminate all radio talk shows from your diet?  Do you excuse yourself from the conversation when it turns to gossip, lack, and negativity?  Have you replaced former friends and acquaintances in your life that were negative?  Do you schedule and restrict the time you spend with negative family members?

If you didn’t answer yes to ALL of these questions, I worry for the tremendous amount of lack programming you are being exposed to on a daily basis.

If you did answer yes to all of the above, what that means is that you are likely getting “only” about fifty exposures to negative programming a day!

So in either case, you still need to be cognizant of your programming, and proactive about exposing yourself to more positive programming.

So how you doing on that?

  1. Awesomeness RG! I know you've covered this before, and that this is at the core of your work, but it seems I can never hear this reminder too often...and I imagine it's the same for most folks. Thanks!

  2. It is awesome that you mentioned this topic today.

Few days ago I had a friend posting on facebook: " do not watch any news, all news are bad news now a days" and I respectfully posted back something like this "You must make an extra effort to focus on the most positive images. Certain images like war, cruelty, poor environment, deseases, catasthrophe or any other situation in which you feel a sense of insecurity, will take you away from your Creator and will not lead you to have peace in your inner self. It does not mean you are going to live in a bubble. You need to be informed and get to know all the news without feeling guilty; it is quite important that you concentrate on the positive news. If you pay attention to your body, you will realize how you react when you hear a good news. you will feel peace, trust. and if you think all the news are bad, you must cancel them RIGHT NOW, otherwise you will have to see the worst news in the world. But if you think and believe that good things are happening in the world, then you will start hearing and watching good news"

Someone who read my post contacted me internally and said:"... you are such a dreamer. Do you think that because you put a positive thought in your mind you are going to change the world?" and my reply wws "I do not need to change the world, I just need to chage myself, my perceptions and along with it the world will change"

Thank you Randy for such a wonderful article.

    1. You may not feel you need to change the world, but every major paradigm shift has started with one person's idea. So can you change the world? I believe you can. Every time you recognize the good, however small and share that with others, you are changing the world. Is Randy changing the world by sharing his theory of abundance? He is for me and I suspect you too. Give a smile, get a smile. When enough people adopt a new way, it becomes the new norm, and what our parents and grand parents did becomes antiquated.

  3. Randy, what a great reminder to filter out all the negativity we're bombarded with everyday.I wear a ring on my right hand that is there to remind me to always be in a positive mindset.I can't emphasize how important a token like that helps me in that goal.

  4. I think I finally got the inner truth about self sabotaging, thank you Randy, simple and brilliant.
Let's see if in a year from now I will see some changes, if so, this is the starting point.

    1. @Trini,
Don't be confused and use if. Don't try. If something positives known to you take a decision and implement it. Because your time is very valuable. You don't have time to try and fail, with a question IF I can / IF I can't. Start any self development with the positive output. Its not If So, make it Y E S

      Thanks

  5. Hi Randy,

Stopped watching the news 5 years ago. My antennae go up when I hear somebody chatting headlines, and I leave the room, or at the least, the conversation. Mental poison? I'll pass.

I am extra aware of the movies I watch. Sure, I enjoy the entertainment aspect of films, but I cringe at some of the classic "Rich people are SOBs" story lines which permeate many films.

Also, the greed, violence, sickness, lack, limitation..I note these things, instead of accepting them freely..I've spent great time reprogramming over the past few years so I note the mental garbage seeping in, instantly in most cases. Sometimes, my guard goes down....but overall, I'm pretty good.

Amazing, what most let come down the mental pike. People self-sabotage because they willingly accept mental trash, because they are programmed to do so.

It's uncomfortable to work on yourself. I felt like crap, sitting and meditating a little while back after a day spent working. But I did it. Because I know it helps me release on outcomes, and quiets my mind, and it's what wise people do, and all that good stuff. So I do it. No questions, no excuses.

Your life will not change until you reprogram your subconscious mind. I do not care how hard you work. Who you know. Doesn't matter. Until you tell the god-like part of you what you want, and get the heck out of the way, your wheels will spin, and your life will be like the movie Groundhog Day. Same ish, different day.

Good stuff as always RG. Have a powerful day!

    Ryan

  6. Well, first of all - let me just say that I expose myself to you ... A LOT! Maybe not in person, but I surround myself daily with the wisdom, works and influence of people like you who help me become a better me! It is critical to my growth and I don't think we ever get past the need to immerse ourselves in ideas that cause us to stretch!

Timely as it is, just today I took a good look at something. I have several clients who I have judged have not been treating me or my business with the respect I feel it deserves. Also, they have been asking more and more from me, while they have not been putting in similar effort on their end. My first reaction was to get angry ... but it didn't take me long to get that if I was not receiving the respect I deserved 'out there', it MUST mean that I was not treating myself with the respect I deserved from 'in here' ... from ME.

While this is not a time I can 'afford' to let a client go and forfeit that income, I can 'afford' even less to continue to allow myself to be unappreciated - because if I repeatedly send out the signal that I will accept less than I deserve, I will no doubt continue to draw clients who meet that expectation! So ... I'm firing a few clients this week - nicely, of course!

As always, I adore your work!

  7. It was a choice...either come to this blog or go to yahoo.com. Thanks for saving me some wasted time on yahoo.com.

I agree with what you write about what it takes to get a real benefit. Just reading something positve for 3 minutes is not going to make the change. It has to be thorough. Maybe similar to eating one thing healthy but keeping a larger poor diet.

This one bit of good food isn't going to make a difference in your appearance and health until you really clear out the other crap....

I'm going to work on those lists and come back and say either one of two things. Randy, "I did everything you said, but I'm still having problems! Why?" or "hey, this is starting to work, thanks."

Maybe someone can direct me to more resources on belief. Like the blind anchors that unconsciously say, "okay, I'm going to try and race this car into six gear all out at 180 mph, but deep down you probably expect to get pulled over by the meter maid before you even get the car going in second gear leaving town.

Thanks for the reminder that it's our choice!

    Dan

  8. It has taken me awhile to get certain things, it was like a quiet knowing inside, but the sub-conscious programming is strong.
I am getting very choosy about who I spend my time with, what we talk about and I watch almost no tv, dont' listen to the radio or read the papers.
I am so grateful for people like you who inspire and challenge me to question things and ourselves, it's the only way and I am loving the journey!!
    Thank you

  9. Yeah, Randy, you are right. Just today I've wrote an article into my diary thying to descibe such a situation but not about a single person but about the whole football team.

Two teams were playng a match. One team, to my mind was more prepared but it lost the game due to some very foolish mistakes they made. And the reason they lost is because the were not prepared to win that wery important match. It was the last match in the group and the victory could bring them to play off.

They WERE NOT USED to win such matches against such a team in such a big stadium with such a crowd of people. It was the first time in history for that team to go play off. And they were very nervous, unsteady.

One thing they also did was about attacks. They successfully could bring the ball to the place where they can make a shot, but they didn't make the end shot. They slowed the tempo every time they just had to make the last effort to score.

And that looks sad. But it only reminds us that psychological thainig for a sportsman is more important than physical!!! Looks strange but this is a fact.

    Thank you, Randy.

  10. I love the way your posts end with a provocative question, eg., "...you still need to be cognizant of your programming, and proactive about exposing yourself to more positive programming.

"So how you doing on that?"

I'm doing much, MUCH better re avoiding neg. input (TV, neg. nellies, etc.) Feel like I'm taking care of that issue - it's Step One.
Step Two: exposure to pos. programming: I'm re-revisiting Norman Vincent Peale's Positive Thinking books AND applying one of his suggestions - we all know how easy & pleasant it is to read the stuff; in one eyeball & out the other, so to speak.

I am a 'Pragmatic Christian' - believing seems to work much better than not believing, so I choose to believe that the Creator of the universe is a personal & present God, who lovingly hears and answers my prayers.

N.V.Peale suggests memorizing one Biblical verse per day, for 40 days. I'm on day 20, and I'm loving it! (His books are full of Biblical quotations, that's where I'm getting mine). MEMORIZING is key, I go back time & time again to the little notecard in my pocket, to refresh my memory.
Here's a great one that I memorized a few days ago:
"'For I know what plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you...to give you hope, and a future.'" (Jer. 29:11)
Isn't that great? I'll run with believing that!
Onwards & Upwards towards a more positive mindset. with love, Mrs. H&P

  11. Hey Randy- My day has alot less negativity now that baseball season is over for my favorite team- the Red Sox! 🙂

  12. I have been confused about this fact for some time. I do not have any negative beliefs over being wealthy, that I know because I have been able to earn over a million a year in the past. It is about the people that in my life. If I blame them for any negativity, then I am not taking responsibility for myself and blaming them for my circumstances, but if I don't recognize that their negativity is effecting me then I let them continue to do so. Any brilliant ideas on this one? Especially when they are my kids and family?

    1. Hmm... Responsibility is a good word here. I think you have hit on something there.

We are all ultimately responsible for ourselves, our feelings, our problems etc...

If other people are causing us pain and upset, we have to find solutions to these problems. Even if part of the uncomfortable solution is acknoweledging to ourself and our loved ones that they are part of the problem. Then all people involved have to be a part of the solution.

What if they don't or won't? You just have to wait and see.... People can be surprising. I don't know how old your kids are, but if they are younger children, we adults have way more of an impact positive or negative on them than they do on us.

Good luck. I face similiar situations. Responsibllity is the key I think. Ulitimately we are responsible for our own happiness. I do believe though that happiness rubs off on the people around us, when we are happy too.

    2. Amy it is not about blaming others. It is recognizing that they are not adding positive value to your life and being discerning about how much negative exposure you allow yourself.

      -RG

      1. Also, I would add that sometimes there are other solutions to look at first before we distance ourselves from others.

        For instance:
        A. Are we contributing to the negativity? And if so, what can we do to change this?

        B. How can we work on the negativity together with these folks we live with. Is there a problem that can be solved? Would something help? Like therapy or marriage and family counseling?

Another question. Am I adding positive value in this situation? If not how could I?

When it comes to our loved ones, assuming they are not abusing us, or we have tried different solutions and they have not worked, I think it is important to try to resolve problems first. If nothing works, then you should defitnitly try limiting exposure to these folks.

Once again, if your children are little. You can't walk away from them, and most likely it is your negativity that is causing them to be negative. If they are under age, ooh, I don't know let's say twelve.

  13. Wow, I am sure negative programming has a lot to do with blocking our prosperity. But, you know I also think fear is huge part of it too.

For me it is also fear of being totally responsible. Victimhood. Victimhood is also fear, fear of realizing no one can save us but ourselves. It easier to wait for a rescuer.

Learning responsibility is a toughy, I have spent most of my life working on that particular venture... Anyway, I think it is part of becoming a real adult, not just a child in an adult body.

But, it takes time for some. Baby steps and then others get and just fly. It is a learning proscess for some. And prosperity may look different for everyone also.

I think when we are truly successful adults, then we are prosperous. Because most likely we will do the things neccessary to keep ourselves happy.

  14. Hi Randy,

powerful stuff again. The counter programming is the problem. Everybody knows that "dry" alcoholics are not supposed to drink a single drop of alcohol again. Chances are the same holds true for the programming of our subconscious mind. A few seminars won't undo 40 or more years of negative programming, especially not when we are exposing ourselves again to the negative programming after the seminars.

As far as I am concerned, I neither read the paper nor do I watch TV. I can't stand radio talk. The same holds true for conversations about negative things or gossip. I know that there's a lot of bad stuff going on in the world (beside the good stuff), but do I have to dwell on it ? The bad stuff that happens only serves as an excuse not to take action.

    Thanks for sharing these insights.

    Be blessed

    Oliver

  15. Hey Randy, I was just thinking about something. This blog really intrigued me.

Have you ever thought about the fact that mentioning your friend in your post, is a bit like gossip? That is if your "friend" is real. Maybe your just making up examples.

However, if they are real, wouldn't they feel bbad reading it? Especially knowing that those people who know you and know him will know who you know who is?

I don't know. Somehow, I always feel a little bad for those folks you use as the bad example. Not that you do it intentionally. It seems to me you work very hard at being a really good friend. Which is very sweet of you.

  16. Thank you RG. Just what I needed today.

This morning I read an article in a Christian union magazine. I hadn't read the magazine for a while now and I think I just wanted to test my mindset.

The subject was on the property tax discussion here in Belgium. As you can probably imagine, a dark cloud of negative programming hung over this article (and probably over this whole magazine).

"Rich people don't grant us the same prosperity" was one of the key phrases.

The author was happy rich people wanted to pay more taxes in this time of crisis, in the example of Warren Buffet, but then complained that they (the rich people) only wanted to pay this tax temporary. So the solution they found in the political department of this union was a permanent property tax of 1%. Of course only for rich people who have a "fortune" of over 1 million Euro.

This article disgusted me and half way the article i stopped reading.
I took a direct action and unsubscribed from this magazine and the union. (don't need a union anyway).

Reading your article makes me realize that I had to think about this before I picked up the magazine.

So that is what I did today!
I changed my mental defense level for negative programming to DEFCON 1.

  17. What's so terrific about the term self-sabotage?
You choose to be 'cause in the matter'. Every meaning you added to what happened in the past you, the thinker of the thoughts where the one choosing. Today likewise: subjected to the same lack different people make different choices about it's meaning. Enough on the "self" part of self-sabotage, now what about the "sabotage" part?

My vote is: it does communicate!
We got to wake up to that we play the active conscious role in how the world occur to us and what we make happen.

Whoever made the term self-sabotage - the intent is not to have someone blame themselves but a wake-up call to become aware.

Love and Respect - Pierre Leyssac, cph

  18. I answered Yes to all questions!! YEA!! I watch NO TV, listen to only christian (uplifting) music, no newspaper/tv news, I have no time for friends or relatives that are not on a positive, upward climb. I even get up and leave the room when my husband reverts to his childhood pettiness. I literally leave the room with no explanation, no drama. He gets it too. I am spending a large amount of reflection on my character and why I am or am not achieving my goals in a timely manner. ALL the responsibility rests with me and progress is laborious and frustrating sometimes, but well worth it.

  19. Hi Randy
Excellent post...it really resonated with me because I am so big into helping people realize the role they are playing in their lives in terms of their thoughts and what they expose themselves to. The idea of personal responsibility is not a popular one and for most of us, we are always looking outside ourselves to place the blame. I am especially passionate about the gossip and negative talk stuff and I make my best efforts to avoid doing either. People need to wake up and start getting their mind right, without that, they are doomed.

  20. It reminds me of a friend who claim that she's want to be a millionaire. But then the discussion of happy people expose her self sabotaging mindset.

She said rich doesn't make you happy. When I pointed out to her that she may want to look at that statement, she was quick to justify that she is contented and happy with what she has now.

That explains the reason she is not well off.

  21. Hello Randy
And community, this is a breakthrough subject & mwntal shift to any business as well as to the individual that learns to control his thoughts to align with his desired reality. I just wrote on this same subject in which I can attest to the shift in awareness that has accompanied my pursuit to flow in my purpose. Great insight toward that which is congruent to oir ultimate long term goals.

In Christ & to your success
