Change Your View

Posted By: Randy GageAugust 15, 2011

The game was on the line: Last inning, two outs, bases loaded and I was up.  I turned to the umpire and made a joke.  The pitch came in, I drove a line drive into center field and we won the game.

Afterward a teammate came up to me and asked how I could be so relaxed in that situation.  Now I’m as competitive as the next guy.  Truth is, probably more.  I don't like to lose at anything!  But you have to have perspective:  It’s still just a game.

When you’ve lost loved ones, been shot, and faced death, it kind of puts things in perspective.  So whenever I face a challenging or daunting situation, I elevate my perspective.  Hopefully you do as well...

The view from the top of the mountain doesn’t reveal the red lights below.  Is this really that important that the elevator door takes another second to close, or that you wait an extra 90 seconds in the drive-through?

Maybe you think you’re poor.  Maybe you really are.  But what we consider poor may mean you have a computer, cell phone, and television.  Travel to Africa and see what poor really is.

Maybe you’re facing a difficult task right now.  In fact, you probably are...

But how difficult is it really?  Would it help to change the view?  Take a look at the video about my friend and inspiration Kyle Maynard:

You face challenges.  I get that.  We all do.  But change your perspective.  Elevate the view.

By the way, I called to talk to Kyle about something a couple weeks ago and couldn’t get him.  He was in training to climb a mountain…

  1. Hi Randy

I am beyond words. No self pity, no blaming the whole world and a great inspiration for all. This video is precious!
    Thanks vm

  2. A GOOD LESSON FOR THE MOMENTS WHEN WE SAID:NO,I CAN NOT DO THAT,IT IS TOO HARD FOR ME.GREAT VIDEO,THANK YOU FOR SHARING.

  3. I am speechless. Goosebumps. A lump in my throat. Tears in my eyes. My heart is racing. Thank you for sharing this.

    It bring this to mind.......

Your talent is God's gift to you.
What you do with it is your gift to God.

  4. Very inspirational Randy.. It reminds me of another video I saw about an Olympic 400 meter runner who made it to the Gold round in the Olympics and 50 meters from the finish pulled a hamstring. His father in the audience jumped onto the track and helped him hobble across the finish line.. It's about doing what seems impossible when in fact NOTHING is impossible!

Thanks so much. Am sure we all need a lift like this to remind us of the infinite power of the will and Spirit.

  5. I heard about Kyle Maynard before and saw something about him on TV. He is a real inspiration. Even more in combination with your post.
You allways find the right way to re-teach me things I allready know. But you do it in a way that I can see them in a whole new perspective and use them in everyday life.
I allways thought of my self that I was a very positive minded guy. But since the day I stumbeled upon one of your videos very much has changed in my life. Now I´m even more positive and much more fearless.
Best way for me to see those changes is when I´m training parkour. It´s now much easier for me to change my perspective shut off the fear and overcome any obstacles. And to notice such things in my training helps me a lot to apply it to everydays situations.

    Thanks a lot Randy!

  6. Nice one Randy!

Ximena - I've seen the Nick Vujicic videos and interviews today. These two men are the epitome of positive focus and emotional management.

That was a feel-great post, thanks again.

  7. I would really like to see a Randy Gage video montage. Little cute baby randy, maybe a few 70's photos of you in bellbottoms, or possibly a liesure suit. Randy with hair, Randy as spiderman on Halloween. Come on, you are inspirational too, and you have never given us anything like that. Bring it on. Set it to some nice music too. I personally vote for some Johnny Cash tune. Thanks.

  8. Wow...why does it take someone like Kyle to put things into perspective?

I once heard Tawana Williams, author of "Unarmed and Dangerous" speak, also a quadruple amputee. She demonstrated how she changed her kids' diapers when they were little.

Everything was put into perspective then, but how quickly we forget how fortunate we are!

  9. This is the best motivation and empowerment of all times. He teaches us so called able people to really stand up and start making different about ourselves.

Love you so much Randy Gage for this and all the inspirations you inspire me everyday. My inbox is all Randy Gage as I love reading them and applying to my businesses that I am running.

God Bless you and your family Randy Gage.

  11. Thank you Kyle for all the hard work you do to be your best. It is an inspiration for us all especially those of us who are complaining about the possible things that just take a bit of work, you show that even things that seem impossible are worth striving for!

  12. And people say there's nothing worth watching anymore...!

It's been an interesting week...one of my best friends passed away suddenly from cardiac arrest. She did have a congenital heart defect...but she was 33, and for the past year has been trying to drink herself into an earlier grave than she was already destined for. I'll try to respect her decision; I'm not in her shoes, so it's unfair of me to judge her. But no mother should perform useless CPR on her daughter, and no daddy should have to bury his little girl.

Me? I don't have it so bad, after all.

    Thanks for the perspective.

  13. Hey Randy,
Powerful Video. There are so many things in life we take for granted. Then you see someone like Kyle that doesn't understand excuses and it puts your fears into perspective instantly

    Thanks again,
    Jeff Faldalen
