Celebrate the UN

Posted By: Randy GageJanuary 17, 2012

I was having a leisurely breakfast with someone I love and we were talking about his future.  He made a statement that I thought was limiting and I suggested he didn't want to affirm that.

He replied, “I’m just being realistic.”

So naturally I replied, “Maybe you should be unrealistic.”  Because if I have learned anything about success, it is this…

High level achievers – people who do bold, daring and epic things – most definitely are UNrealistic,  UNreasonable and UNbelievable.

So let’s put the un back in fun.  You in?

  1. It's all natural. We're just a bit UNused to doing it in a system of total control. However, we do remember when we were 5, or 15...

So, not the UN, as in ONE, for all and everything, but again, do what you know you need to do and trust the so called mystery and have so called faith.

  3. Yes it's funny how when you tell people something really fabulous - they often exclaim - "UNREAL!"

One must play the game of life and never lose sight of the child within us. That is one thing I often say to my close friends - you are just like a big child -and I guess thats why I love them - it's important not to take oneself too seriously!

  5. 🙂 something for me :))) Unrealistic, crazy plans I have always in my mind. With one difference, now I believe in them... Now I can see the people´s faces who I know, when I come with another crazy idea... 🙂 I love children.. children are the best in it and we can learn from them.. Thank you, Randy. Take care, M.

  7. Wow! As I read your statement, my concous mind (the Ant) was applauding and saying, "Rock on!!" While

my subconcous mind (the elephant..."old tapes") was saying, "isn't it more comfortable under this rock you're hiding under? (FEAR in big red letters on top of rock) No pressure, no expectations, no deadlines, no butterfly's in your stomach." My chest actually tightened up while reading it. But the price for peace and quiet, no pressure; will be a life of regret and "shoulda, coulda, woulda". No thanks. I want to sing in Carnegie Hall and you can't do that from under a rock.

  10. Geoffrey Holder reprised his role on an episode of The Apprentice for the "7UP Retro" campaign.I have completely Unrealistic aspirations. For example, I think I can transcend the age barrier as a musician by doing electronic stuff, and I think I can use that as a springboard to build some sort of multi-media enterprise that benefits people in some way, and possibly die a billionaire. All of this is completely delusional. lol Oh well, it does make for some fun 😀

    1. @ThomasMrak I don't want to hear one more God damned mention of the age barrier from you! That is just a mind virus and there is no reason for you to give it power any longer. Cher went 30 or 40 years between #1 hits, and so did Carlos Santana. Tony Bennet is still selling millions of records in his 70's. And I'm not sure if you realize this, but Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney aren't in their 20's any longer! Music is ageless, timeless and eternal. That is a belief that will serve you better. - RG

      1. @Randy_Gage @ThomasMrak Oh, I also wanted to say, I thought it was kind of Randy, to say those things to you Thomas. Oh Randy, you big INTP?

        1. @Randy_Gage @ThomasMrak Randy, for you, today it stands for Inteligent Noteworthy Terrific Person. I was trying to get you to share your personality type. INTP is an introverted intuitive thinking precieving type. I think you are an ENTJ. I wondered if you knew and if you would tell us?

If you want to take a test and find out your type here is a link: http://www.keirsey.com/sorter/instruments2.aspex?partid=0 I don't know if you can just click on it or not. Anyway, it is fun to find out what you are!

        2. @Randy_Gage @ThomasMrak "UGHHH" Okay, I will agree with all of those adjectives today. Tomorrow may be a different story. 🙂 Your Meyers-Briggs Personality type shall remain UNidentified for now.....

Anyway, personality typology isn't silly. It is a gateway to empathy and understanding. Everyone has every trait, it is just the ones you have preference over.

I am reading "Atlas Shrugged", and I find it interesting that to me a few of the main charaters are clearly misunderstood intuitive thinkers, including Ayn Rand herself. Intuitive thinkers are complex people and I imagine they often feel misunderstood. Albert Einstein was an NT. I thought you might be as well.

      2. @Randy_Gage Yeah, I'm just very hard on myself. Carlos Santana is awesome. I watched a concert around the Holidays on PBS. I highly doubt many people could hold a candle to him.A few years ago he really connected with younger people by collaborating with Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20. Tony Bennett is doing the same thing to get younger people who might not otherwise be interested in the music he performs and having heard some of the collaborations they are awesome.I think the main reason we don't see more people succeed at something past their 20s is people give into pressure of "The American Dream" of a modest house in suburbia, two kids, two cars, and a middle income job. Or if you aren't on that track for whatever reason, subsist on government entitlement programs, etc.Very few truly successful musicians are middle class.

They're wealthy, and the ones who continue to shine year after year are obviously are business oriented as well. Yes, sometimes it is "random chance", but more often it isn't. There's also the idea of "if you work hard you'll be rewarded." Obviously that's false. There are plenty of poor and middle class people who work extremely hard and are not rewarded; some business/creative types end up destroying themselves too! They may have the money and the toys, but there is no time to enjoy them. The power of connection is much more powerful.

I'm only 30. Still have time, but turning 30 made me aware of my mortality.Part of it is the fear of being alone too, especially since I am gay, and men are far more interested in physical attractiveness than women. (Women obviously are of course, but not to the extent men are.)I look young, (mistaken by many for a lot younger if I shave and taking better care of myself. About the only thing which really ages me is I am losing my hair but the bald look works for me.I have to stop getting sucked into the world created by marketers. i.e. you're too old if you're ____. The reason the 18-35 bracket is so coveted by marketers is many 18-35 year olds have disposable income, and the goal is to get 'em hooked ASAP.It's a bit condescending of them to think once you turn 36 you're no longer going to try new things.

  12. Hey Randy,

I remember that dude when he was in a James Bond movie and of course his famous 7up commercials. Do they even make 7Up anymore?

Anyway, I agree that being an "UN" is the way to go.

    1. @Justin Mazza Yes they do!Not sure what it's made with though. Claims "natural" flavors, but the FDA allows a lot of leeway for what defines natural. If it said lemon juice or lemons it'd be a bit better for you. (Although it's still soda.)

    23. I love it, Randy! If you don't have "un", you can't have "fun". And if you're not having fun, you're probably not doing it right! This was a wonderfully un-realistic post!
