Being Right

Posted By: Randy GageJuly 23, 2009

In yesterday’s post we talked about being wrong.  But what about when you’re right?  I noticed another funny coincidence when I look objectively at myself…

Back when I had such low self-esteem, when I was right, I had to club people over the head with it.  As my self-esteem has climbed, I no longer have to issue a major press release of “I told you so” every time I am correct on something.  (Except of course when I win an argument with Lisa Jimenez!)

A funny thing has happened…

When I admit a mistake, instead of losing respect from people, I gain it.  And when I’m right on something and I don’t need to trumpet it, I get a much quicker buy-in from everyone involved.

So if you are trying to raise your self-esteem, here’s something to try:  Be gracious in victory, and eager to admit and apologize for being wrong.  You’ll probably go up in the estimation of everyone around you.  And you’ll probably be much more comfortable just being yourself, a big step toward higher self-esteem.

  1. When you no longer have the need to use the "I told you so" - thats the time when you have enough self-esteem to share with others - lifting them to a higher self-esteem too!

  2. Apparently, Einstein worked out that on average,
78% of our perceptions are wrong.
He modestly conceded that as a self-confessed genius,
only 75% of his perceptions were wrong,
or 74% "on a good day."
    Hmmmmm........

  3. Hi Randy,
Ever since I no longer try to teach people everything I know and prove my being right and listen to them instead, they started to consult me more often and ask my opinion. Everything you say proves right in my life.
    Thanks, Natasa

P.S.: Can you really win an argument with Lisa? Over a softball technique, I bet! Just kidding, both of you are dearest souls we all should thank for...

  4. Yep I can relate to that. I had terrible self-esteem til the last couple of years or so. So now I'm reasonably happy with myself BUT (and I'm sorry if this is a bit off topic), I still go from lots of money to nothing - hero to zeo in about 6 months.

I thought it had a lot to do with not liking myself too much but it I've just manged to do it for the third time.............
    Anybody had that?

  5. Great insight, Randy 🙂

But this is easy to see once you already have achieved greater self esteem. Until you do, there`s your ego struggling to "club people over the head" for satisfaction and recognition.

So this realization sort of creeps up on you, as your self esteem gradually develops.

Posts like this one can help a lot of people still hungry for recognition....something you have already obtained....but it would take a leap of faith for them to take your advice, and actually change their habitual reaction to "being right".

Your contribution is most valuable 🙂

  6. Well, there is allways a reward for being right or wrong, what is the reward in every situation?, is that reward serving me and others ?, at the end righ and wrong are labels from our believing system.....I guess is about teaching or learning in avery opportunity without judging or labeling a person as right or wrong and see me and others as cosmic students in the Universal school.......

  7. Randy I just want to say I have just started to read your postings and I have to say they are really helpful to myself and I'm sure to others as well. Keep them coming, and great job.

  8. That is wisdom right there. Thanks Randy. And yeah, enjoyed the video of you and Eric cruising the river in Amsterdam. You should be in Sydney Australia now, right? Talk about a rockstar lifestyle...

  9. Randy -

Stepping up and admitting your faults frees you from the effort of keeping up pretenses. You immediately have more energy to focus on what is really important to you!

And you do get better at it the more often you practice it!

    Peace,

    Bob
