Being Me

Posted By: Randy GageJanuary 3, 2013

It ain’t easy being a motivational speaker!  I’m writing this on my way to Hawaii to conduct a leadership retreat.  That’s the fun part.  Now being on a Delta jet that hasn’t been cleaned properly, for a five-hour-plus flight, with no in-seat entertainment system, no adapter for my laptop, and only an old movie I never heard of which I can watch only on a monitor over my head, or a tiny one about 15 feet away.  So I really want to be cranky, but that isn’t really going to serve me is it?

It’s tough being a motivational speaker when you have to follow your own advice…

I was commiserating with Kyle Maynard about this on Twitter during the flight.  He sent me the YouTube video from Louis CK with his hysterical bit about how we take things for granted – like sitting in a chair, flying at 35,000 feet.

At times like that, it’s good for me to remember when I had to travel by Greyhound bus.  But I won’t lie:  There’s still a part of me that thinks about the thousands of dollars I’m spending for a First Class ticket and receiving substandard service from an airline.  So I tweet or blog about it and vent my frustrations.  But I never lose sight of how lucky I am to have the problems I have.

And that’s the thing about problems…

None of us likes to have them.  But we all need them.  Because they mean we’re attempting something worthwhile.  They teach us lessons, help us develop character, learn new skills and grow in many other ways.

And it’s when we don’t feel like doing something we need to do it.  It’s when you don’t feel like working out that you really need to hit the gym.  It’s when you’re facing some crappy situation that you have to keep the right attitude.

Because none of us completely controls what happens to us.  But we all have the choice to choose how we respond to those situations.  It isn’t always easy to keep the right mindset.  But it’s worth it.

  1. How true. Problems do indeed teach us many things. Attitude is everything and being grateful for things. I guess being on a crappy 1st Class flight is a rather better reality than being on a crappy standard fare flight next to a screaming baby! LOLOLOL Hawaii eh? How very wonderful. Enjoy!

This has been one of those weeks. On Sunday a relative of mine decided that it was his time to move on to the  other side.  At first I was shocked and started to react to his actions with confusion, anger, sadness etc. Then I said to myself it was his decision and I don't need to understand his reasons or even know them.  Since that moment I have been more at peace with myself and been able to emotionally support those around me.

Today I got caught in traffic a 30 min ride took 2 1/2 hours since i was listening to an educational podcast i only knew I ws in traffic.  Drivers next to me were looking angry and uncomfrotable.  Later I found out that our short delay was the result of someone attempting to cross 4 lanes of traffic going 70mph my morning was not so bad.

Some would think I have every "right" to be Mad but I think differently thanks to people like you Randy!

  27. I really get the message of this post.  However, it made me think of something else entirely.  The lesson it brought to mind for me is that material comfort has nothing to do with joy or satisfaction.  Material comforts provide only temporary joy anyway.  So no matter what the state of our situation is, as long as we have grace within, all our material situations will have less of a pull on us, one way or the other.  So, I also think it is a post about grace.  And, other stuff too.  🙂

    1. @Annieb
Funny, Annie, I was just thinking the same sort of thing; that we WANT something, and we get it (yay! Flying Business Class!!)  then we become discontent, and have to WANT something else - our wants just naturally expand that way, that's life, that's growth, that's expansion.  It's not a bad thing, in my opinion - tho you may disagree.

How do we know what we want? By observing Contrast, aka What We Don't Want.
So Randy has discovered that Flying Business Class doesn't quite-quite match up to the perfection-of-service he'd like to enjoy.  That's Contrast.
I wonder what he'll go for next;  Will he buy a private jet? that could be fun.  Or if that's too big a stretch, I can imagine Randy chartering a private jet for the return-trip from Hawaii.  Go for it, Randy!  I'd love to hear about how that feeeeels!

      1. @MrsHealthandProsperity I think it is normal to have wants and desires.  However, that has nothing to do with grace.  Grace is about thankfulness and appreciation.

        1. @Annieb
And here I thought grace was about walking easily in 4 1/2" heels!
          sorry, couldn't resist.
Human grace is .... as varied as humans.
God's Grace is about nothing.  Nothing! It is just ... grace, for no reason, not deserved/undeserved, not 'justifiable' or 'reasonable' in human terms.  Just ... God's Grace,  Thank God.

  34. We are still human after all. As trainer or coach, we have to live the life we preach. It's easy to talk about it on stage, but when it comes to ourselves, can we still live it? Whenever I had strange incidents happened to me, I'm grateful for it, as it enhanced my experience about life. These incidents allow me to empathize with my client. Like I had a huge quarrel with my sister that we didn't talk to one another for a year. But now, when a client comes with an issue regarding siblings, I know how he/she feels.
