Being Driven vs. Called to Contribute

Posted By: Randy GageMarch 13, 2019

Lots of people talk about their passion and why they have to do something.  Yesterday I was listening to a podcast interview with Marc Andreessen and he had some contrarian views about following your passion.  He sees that as a very self-centered endeavor and said he tries to avoid investing in people with that focus. He proposes that a better idea is looking to contribute.

If you have a passion for developing a product/service/organization, it might matter a great deal to you, but not so much to anyone else.  But if your desire is to develop a product/service/organization because it will contribute to the greater good, then it’s much more likely to matter to other people.

For me, I get wary when people tell me they are driven.  Because people are often driven by revenge, hate, fear and other negative influences.  People who are driven to do something, are usually exhausted and depleted afterward.

There is a qualitative difference with being driven to accomplish something, and actually experiencing an inner calling that makes your heart beat faster.  I like to associate with people who are experiencing a calling and want to contribute.

So where are you at in your life and career right now?  Are you driven or driving?

  1. Or, it might be that - like most people, dare I suggest - neither.

"Calling" is a word that I have in the past associated with the worst form of religious bigotry - and I'm aware that not all religious people are bigots - hence it was difficult for me to get past that belief about this word.

Having been educated on how easy it is to take on beliefs that serve / empower me, one of those newer beliefs is that words are open to interpretation by each of us, hence I now relate "calling" in a similar way to passion, in that I have chosen my "calling".

In the early 80s I would have used the word "driven" and even now would avoid the word "driving" as guiding is a better word for me, partially as what I chose to do is about contribution, even if it doesn't always appear to others as such.

  2. When you and Spirit are in agreement, you are both driving and driven, you have the same calling and want to contribute.

    1. i had to leave my last job and need a new income before joining direct sales. It is my last week of class and then I will focus on an income to support me while going to school and building a business. I made direct sales part of my dissertation so now I need the income to live, go to school, and build a business. Is it worth it? Yes, my doctorate degree in global leadership has been worth it.

  3. Appropriate passions are critically important! APPROPRIATE —> Have value for others, are morally and ethically sound, and are consistent with your VISION (“Fylly Steam Ahead” by Ken Blanchard and Jesse Lyn Stoner) for your life.

  4. My mind grasps what you are saying. Your journey has taken you to this awareness. For me, the jury is still out on this issue. I look around me and see so many people highlighting their noble motives for their businesses and their ambitions. As Hamlet's mom says referring to an actress overplaying her part, "The lady doth protest too much, methinks." Is all drive motivated by revenge, hate, and fear? Was Arnold driven or driving as he single-mindedly pursued his vision to be the best in every bodybuilding competition, or as he climbed to fim stardom? Did he have you and me in mind? Of course not? Did he make a contribution to our world? Absolutely! He gave us entertainment and modeled possibilities for extraordinary achievement. Did Brando act to change the world? Did he contribute something of value? I love the power of dramatic storytelling to make us compelling authentic communicators. I teach people how to discover and harness that power. Do I help them? Yes. Do i want to help them? Yes. But what I do was born in my personal passionate love affair with drama as a heightened expression of life, as a force that transforms the mundane into something breathtaking. I love Dan Sullivan's (Strategic Coach) book, Wanting What You Want. He points out that you don't have to justify what you want with noble intentions or with a desire to change the world. As long as what you want does not hurt others, you can just want it because you want it. Was Dagny Taggart driven or driving? You, Randy, may be Driving now. But, don't dis Driven, because Driven, I believe, took you to Driving.

  5. Working my sales job, pitching people in the airport. Seeing how far I can develop myself for excellence and performance and someday going into business and albeing able to afford a lifestyle that lets me work on music and whatever is next.
