Are You Obsessed?

Posted By: Randy GageMay 18, 2010

In yesterday’s post I said that your assignment was not a decision, but a discovery.  And I think what you do for a living gives you clues.  That doesn’t mean, however, that if you are currently working at Dairy Queen as a cashier that your future is in ice cream.  (But it might be.)

I have been a dishwasher, cook, and construction worker.  But those things were not my career, and certainly not my assignment.  But they did some important things.

First, they bought me time to sort out who I was, and what I wanted in life.  Second, they gave me some income, so I had the security of having my survival needs met, so I could experience that discovery process of myself.  And probably more important than all...

Those jobs built the work ethic, discipline and experience I needed to become who I am.  Which naturally led to my natural assignment.  Teaching prosperity principles around the world.

It wasn’t always fun, but I wouldn’t change anything along the way.  Not one hardship, one challenge, or one setback.  Because every single one of those things was a critical ingredient in my character development.

I told you it took about nine months to discover that retirement was not an option for me.  What happened?

I came to realize very quickly how fast my intellect and other mental faculties could atrophy.  If I would have stayed retired another six months, I would have been happy to sit at home evenings and watch “CSI.”  Which would be a fate worse than death.

I think we need work that we are passionate about; work that has us ripping off the sheets in the morning, eager to get to it.  I have found that, and it contributes a tremendous amount to the fulfillment and joy I experience in life.  The work I do, is my assignment; they are one and the same.

I think everyone in order to really reach a self-actualized state, really does have to find work that does this for them.  And that may not be the job you have at the moment.  That job may be a stepping-stone for you, as many of mine were for me.

Which is not to say that every mother (or father) should work at a job.  I think of my friend Melissa Hasson.  Her full-time work is raising her beautiful kids, and it has as much passion and meaning for her, as my work does for me.  Now when her kids are grown, she may decide to teach, become a nuclear engineer, or develop a vaccine.  But right now she has a passion with her work of the moment.

Do you have something you’re passionate about now?  What about obsessed?

What would you say if I suggested that you must have an obsession about something in order to have a great deal of success at it?  Please share your thoughts on this, and we’ll pick up there on the next post.

  1. Randy,

I was fortunate to be lead to Steven Martile's web site where I was emailed a pamphlet called "The Genius Within You". It took me through a number of steps to uncover what my passions were and then writing a life purpose statement. Once I completed these exercises I had the inspiration to launch a new company that is consistent with my natural abilities and talents. Since we are early stage, I cannot divulge the details, but suffice it to say that it's exciting. I'm also finding I'm attracting others into my Life who are involved with other passions like film, production and inspirational content, which is what I'm all about!!

I'm confident that once we launch and I get the kind of market feedback I expect, I'll be bounding out of bed, travelling, living in abundance and experiencing my Dream!!

  2. Thanks for the perspective Randy. I too worked at jobs with no room for growth that provided little more than a basic living. For the longest time I would beat myself up after making the type of career change I really wanted for having worked in other menial jobs for so long. I have also come to a slow realization though that there were great lessons learned from those experiences.
I think the growth has to be continual. Even though I currently have a position that most people would die for I am looking forward to my next assignment..... the one that has me obsessed. Although the current one is great, I don't have that obsession.

  3. Thanks Randy, my obsession is to build the largest sports complex in Latin America less than the last one that was built in Qatar (www.aspire.qa). I just throw my facebook group, a million healthy people, and is the reason why I do MLM. Health, welfare, prosperity and abundance.

  4. I have to say network marketing is my passion at this point in my life (I’m 50 years old but full of passion for life).

I was introduced to the business 3 years ago and after giving it a try for 6 months I backed away from it. Then 6 months later I tried it again and now I’m in it for good. When I'm awake I'm thinking about network marketing, when I go to bed at night I'm thinking about network marketing and network marketing is the first thing on my mind in the morning when I wake up. I follow all of the top earners in the business and I know, no doubt about it, that I will be successful in network marketing.

    Yes Randy I’m obsessed!

  5. Randy,

Having been a nuclear engineer once, with everyone around me obsessed at my being the best and as long as we were all in agreement life was rather spectacular. When I awoke from their dream the game changed.

And to quote the master: It wasn’t always fun, but I wouldn’t change anything along the way. Not one hardship, one challenge, or one setback. Because every single one of those things was a critical ingredient in my character development.

St Augustine offered, "People travel to wonder at the height of the mountains, at the huge waves of the seas, at the long course of the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motion of the stars, and yet they pass by themselves without wondering." Personal growth is good for the soul, the body and the spirit.

Jack London hit it out of the park saying, "I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time."

You only get one life to live and it comes one day at a time. You may use it any way you will. You pay for life in the exchange of today. None of them are wasted in my view. But imagine the days you have left behind. They are gone forever but the seeds you planted will bear fruit of one kind or another. When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone and in its place is something you have left behind...let it be something you and others will smile about.

  6. Yes I do have a mission and I am currently on it. Right now, I am struggling through some really tough times. However, I am not giving up until I can work at my passion everyday just like you do.

  7. Obsessed - I was .
25 years of active alcoholism. Did not understand that I was obsessed until I took the chance to do a Twelve step program three years ago and could quit . Before that I had no choice ...

Today I am passionate by my companys products and oppurtunity.

I am also passionated about staying in shape and I really love running and work out at gym. Occasionally I participate in Yoga classes or martial art stuff.

But my passion today is to be younger than today . (Physically , the earth will turn as it always has ).

Thank you for inspiring my development of personal evolution...

  8. Hi!yes, yes, yes.I grew up with a mom who always said things like:you always change your mind, how can you afford that and no, that cannot work. And then my husband did the same and all my girl friends and so on...but instead of dying (because my heart is immortal)-today I am screaming of happiness for the fact that noone tells me such crap anymore.I suddely am surrounded with people who say:be obsessed, create wealth, take the future in your hands, every door is open life is beautiful make all the opportunities you can..suddenly people think I am a nice person and love to be with me I have a work I will get a new better one next week...I look at myself and feel in my heart:Hey,you were nice all that time too.Your heart was beautiful your mind spontaneous your vision was always GREAT-just that...nobody mirrored it so you couldn´t see it clearly.Wow!I am obsessed by the opportunities that suddenly is shown and I know what you mean with discover. My assignment right now is to discover that I really have such a great one I don´t even dare thinking about it halleluia.......... AMEN....................!

  9. "watch “CSI.” Which would be a fate worse than death", haha, Randy you´re great!!! there is a lot of wisdom in that sentence
    regards

  10. Hello Jonathan,
Happy for you and your new endeavors!

I'm obsessed about a beautiful screenplay I've written, called "Grand Prize Wedding" that I'm currently marketing. It's an uplifting, funny, but most of all inspiring story based in Chicago. Would love to share it with you and your associates if you so desire. (www.lindaroach.org)
    Peace!

  11. My question: Do passions change and, if so, does that mean that your FIRST passion really wasn't your passion at all? What happens when you find your passion, live it for about 12 or so years, but then you find you have lost your passion? That happened to me three years ago.

I've owned a very successful business for just over 15 years now, but I am seriously considering selling the business and just taking a full time job in my field to give me a paycheck while I figure things out. (Mind you, taking a full time job would be a HUGE pay cut for me. But I wouldn't have the stresses of working six days a week and 14-hours a day to market the business, manage projects, handle billing and contracts, and handle the client emergencies that seem to crop up more and more frequently lately.) I've not been happy or fulfilled in my business for the past 5 years or so. Maybe it's just that I need to tweak the business a bit. Maybe it's that I need to go in a different direction. Maybe I just need a vacation. LOL!

All of my friends (who are also entrepreneurs) say I would be taking a HUGE step backward by "going to cubicle-land." They all literally think I have lost my marbles. Part of me agrees that going to "Cubicle-Land" would kill my creativity. But I'm so burned out now, I'm not sure I can have any sort of creativity on my own business.

I already have a full time job offer, and I have a potential buyer for my business. So, I am at a crossroads. I honestly don't know what the right move is at this point. Usually I get a pretty good gut feeling about which way to go. But I can't get a good read on this, and it's driving me a little nutty at the moment. Have I lost my passion and would it be a good thing to "coast" and give myself a break by working for "the man" for awhile? Or, at my age, would that be career suicide?

I know no one in this forum can answer that question; only I can. But I do wonder how I could have been so passionate about something for so long, and now have zero passion for what once made me leap out of bed in the morning and stay up late at night.

  12. Its these sort of posts that I love, ones regarding your purpose/assignment in life.

I am in the process of discovering mine, or allowing it to discover me. I know Im somewhere in it, Im living in it...its under my nose so to speak.

Is there anything you can suggest to help the discovery process along?

  13. I'm really enjoying this series of recent posts, Randy. I have been fortunate to be able to follow my passion (assignment) for the last 2 years. I've never enjoyed life more, nor have I ever gotten up for "work" the whole time. What a blessing ...

    Best to you,
    Scott

  14. Mr. Randy

I'm obsessed in the sport car like yours.
nevertheless, My most precious dreams and goals is Freedom.
I'm still working on my assignments right now, and very busy.

Thank you for yours words again.

  15. I read and reread your post. EVERYTHING in it screams that you know you are no longer supposed to be where you are. A huge sign that change is necessary is a dropoff of creativity. And having buyers and a job lined up?? Those are signs, if ever there was a sign.

Take a deep breath. Believe in your gut. Do not agree with what your peers and colleagues say (trust me...they will be in this same position in their own time. You can be their inspiration!) Take a break, and let the wind fill your new sails. Keep your eyes and ears open...and the new life will make itself known!

But...I'm not telling you anything you don't already know. Just do it. As a wise friend once said to me, Jump, and the net will appear. Yeah, I didn't believe it either...but it does, and it will.

    Good luck!

  16. Have you thought about hiring people or delegating away all those tasks that you do not enjoy. I have heard it said that if you can find someone to do a task 70% as well as you can then you should not be doing it. By concentrating on those tasks you enjoy in your business it could give you new life. Also by systematizing your business it will give it a larger asking price when you sell it. Wouldn't recommend the cubicle working for the Man route but you know yourself better than anyone. I feel like a caged animal in those things!
