Are You Gratitude in Action?

Posted By: Randy GageMay 27, 2011

True gratitude is even more than a state of being; it's a way of living.  You enhance the lives of everyone around you, and your own life as well.

Sometimes you may have to look a little deeper to find the things you’re grateful for.  But they are there in abundance.  When you develop the practice of looking for and acknowledging your blessings, you become gratitude in action.   And that is a prosperous life!

  1. There is something about the 'wiring' of human being that fills up a ready made list or 'register' of what we do not like and what upsets us. It is available instantly any time someone pushes the button. No thinking required for it to spew out into the space around us.

On the other hand we don't have that same register for what we are grateful for. It has to be created every time. Perhaps some have built a muscle to almost do this on automatic... and that wouldn't be gratitude either. "[D]evelop[ing] the practice of looking for and acknowledging your blessings, you become gratitude in action."

A practice that disappears the 'spew' and leaves rainbows. Thank you Randy for creating a space of rainbows.

  2. THANK YOU RANDY AND MICHAEL. I HAVE SPENT MOST OF MY LIFE SPEWING AS MICHAEL CALLS IT, AND HAVE ONLY STARTED TO EMBRACE THE IDEA OF GRATITUDE IN THE LAST FEW YEARS. IT REALLY IS SOMETHING THAT REQUIRES A CONSTANT CONSCIOUS ACTIVITY TO MAKE IT WORK AND CONTINUE. I CAN FULLY UNDERSTAND THAT IF IT WERE AUTOMATIC, IT WOULDN'T BE GRATITUDE BECAUSE WE THEN FALL INTO THE TAKING THING FOR GRANTED MODE. I HAVE PROGRAMED MY IPHONE WITH A MESSAGE THAT SIMPLY SAYS "GRATITUDE PLEASE" EACH HOUR OF THE DAY, JUST TO REMIND ME TO BE AWARE OF WHAT MY THOUGHTS ARE AND TO CHANGE THEM IF NEEDED, WHICH IS QUITE OFTEN I'M SORRY TO SAY. IT IS ESPECIALLY HELPFUL IN THIS WORLD OF HURRY AND SCURRY WHERE WE ARE BOMBARDED WITH SO MUCH ALL DAY LONG, AND SOME OF THAT STUFF ISN'T VERY POSITIVE. WE MUST BE WATCHFUL SENTRIES AT THE GATES TO OUR MIND.

      1. Thanks James. Thanks Randy.

I have picked up this trick of setting up mobile reminders for gratitude. Grateful for this. Seeing more good, even though we so desperately want that, requires practice and conscious effort.

I am sure one can get used to gratitude.

        Thanks again folks,
        Hersh

  3. i often find that a good place to start is to appreciate the fact that I am alive.

After that, all the other things I can be grateful for just come tumbling in!

  4. I'm really grateful for my life, family, good friends, boyfriend, nature, my body, my health, opportunities to learn, growth, and be better; the sun, the rain, the clouds, birds, this day, and I could continue with a long list.
Life gives us a lot of presents and is really important to realize that there they are.

    🙂
    Thanks!!!

  5. Randy, as always you remind us of what's MOST important in Life. Too often we are given gifts, including Life itself, and forget to appreciate the abundance. When we receive, which we do constantly, we must ALWAYS show our gratitude.

Am sure there are many people who 'think' they show gratitude, but their actions show otherwise. Action is what makes Life happen, so simply by stating what we are grateful for daily is a meditation and purpose we must all embrace.

Thanks again for the reminder. Living a Life of Gratitude is truly living Life!

  7. Oh Randy ... sometimes I think you just live in my head! 😉

I just got back from dropping my 19 year old twin daughters off at the airport in San Diego about an hour away from my home. Around the half-way mark of the drive, there is a large arched bridge that spans both sides of the freeway. Years ago when these same girls were small, they affectionately nicknamed it 'the Wishing Bridge'. Of course, the idea behind the name being that each time we drive underneath it, we must each make a wish for our deepest desire, and the magic of the bridge will make it come true. 😉

Today, so excited to be flying alone together on an airplane to meet up with their triplet brother for the first time in a year, they hardly noticed the Wishing Bridge ... but I certainly did. I internally acknowledged it on the way down in their company, and cried under it on the way back up alone on the return part of my journey. And my tears flowed from exactly what this post is about … the joy of gratitude. All I could think about as I passed beneath it was just how many of my ‘wishes’ had come true over the past several years of my life – how far I had come - and I silently thanked those bridge fairies for smiling upon me.

Now of course, I know it was really my decisions and my faith that made those dreams become reality … but saying ‘thanks’ never hurts! And of course, I was sure to go ahead and make another wish too, because – well, why abandon a system that is working so well? 😉

So, while I am rolling around in all this bliss and gratitude, I just want to say that I absolutely love being able to have access to this space and this community to be able to share, grow, learn and celebrate. I truly appreciate everyone who participates here … you all continue to help make me a better me again and again, and I love you for that!

    Filled Up With Appreciation,

    K♥

  8. And the higest, most powerful level of gratitude is being/feeling grateful for everything in our life, the perceived good, bad and ugly. It all serves us in some way, so be gratful for all of it.

  9. RG,
I think this is one of the most important things to live. I know when I live in a state of gratitude it is impossible for me to complain when I am thanking God and the Universe for what I have now.

If I am not grateful for what I have than how will I know to be thankful later on.

Gratitude is also an action word. I believe when I give to others and help others. That means when I go to Church I don't just sit there and soak up the spirituality. I tithe and I bring a cake to the fellowship. I am not bragging this is a belief in the Bible.

Thanks for a great post about something we can all do.
    Thanks,
    Jim Story

  10. Wow, thanks Randy you make a gratitude attitude feel like a powerful rule to live our lives by. I never really thought about the power it can have to uplift the people around us as well. I am experiencing it though as the people you talk to suddenly start listening, really listening to what you have to say.

  11. Journaled since 4th grade (x25 years). Went back 10 years to recollect some trips and experiences.

Back then, I journaled as a way to vent and actually had a tendency to write down my negative thoughts and experiences. The problem? When I reread the material, I actually got pissed off all over again! A double whammy.

On the flip side, in the past year, my journals only contain positive experiences, thoughtful and kind gestures, and the sweet pleasures of life - intentionally leaving all negative thoughts out. Wow! What a difference in feeling in rereading that material. I gush with love, accomplishment, and feelings that I have the most wonderful life on this planet.

So, yes, there is something about looking at the positive interactions in life. It pays itself forward and more. Thank you for reminding us the value of gratitude - it's so true!

  12. I've learned to become more grateful for things Randy. Moment to moment, I see where I am at as being the perfect. No matter where it is. The more I feel grateful for this perfect placement the more cool things move into my life.

Today, I just arrived in a spot where you have shot a video or two - Phuket. This is after spending 2 weeks in Bali. When I sit back to think of how much I struggled with poverty a few years back and where I am now, I am moved to tears by feeling so deeply grateful.

Thank you for all that you do Randy, you are an inspiration to me and more people than you can ever imagine.

    Ryan
