Amazing Grace

Posted By: Randy GageJanuary 31, 2012

One of the other topics I discussed in my sermon last Sunday was the issue of grace.  Of all the world’s major organized religions, Christianity is the only one that offers grace.

Now we have a little different take on it at my church than some others do.

Some read the Bible and classify man as having original sin.  In Unity, we see it as original blessing.

That’s why if you watched the service, when the choir sang Amazing Grace, they substituted the word “soul” for “wretch.”  We don’t think people are wretched.  We believe you are a perfect child of God.

But because we’re human, we sometimes get off course and make mistakes.  When you are getting less than prosperous results, that is a sign that you have made a mistake.  Those mistakes offer us the lessons we discussed in the last post.

When you’re on the path of enlightenment, you learn from the lesson and move on to the next one.  And here’s the gospel, which actually means good news:  If you do make a mistake, you have the benefit of grace.

And that’s amazing!

  1. Hi Randy

I`m here In Calcutta and today I`ve just been to Mother Teresas Charity/Mission. There is a small museum there about her life and works. It was fascinating to learn about this amazing woman, who did so much, gave so much and did something Epic. Being there was a truly moving and spiritual experience.

Afterwards, one of the sisters showed us around some more. We saw the disabled children and the orphans. It was wonderful to see the inate joy that emanated from the children, and what an experience to see the work the Nuns do there.

I tuned in for your service on Sunday and I understood what you said. Today however, I really got it. I saw it with my own eyes and was touched and moved by it. I understand what you`re saying when you say Be Rich For God..

Being Rich allows us to do and continue to be done the work that I saw today. It was the tremendous donations that helped Mother Teresa and others do so much great work in this world. Its money that will help it continue.

Being a Hindu, I always had access to and read books by various Swamis. They talk about the journey to Enlightement. Before I didnt have a clue what they were talking about but I`m beginning to understand more.

Whilst here in India I have been reading a translation of Patanjalis work about the Yoga Sutras. All these Swamis and Gurus seem to be saying that to reach the Highest levels of Consciousness, we should live the simple life.

I`m confused though. I now understand about Being Rich for God. We can use our money to do good in the world and we can spend money on things which bring joy to our lives such as cars etc. However I hope you can shed some light on the following and help me on my journey:

    1. How many/much material possessions can we really justify?

    2. Can we really reach the Highest levels of consciousness/enlightenment if we dont live the simple life? I understand to have more and do more we have to become more but isnt that up to a certain point? isnt there a point where we need to give up our material possessions and live a simple life so we can move further?

    1. @ashome In answer to your questions:

      1) You don't need to justify your possessions.

      2) Reaching consciousness and living the simple life do not have to be related. I don;t buy into the ascetic argument that you must give up your possessions to be enlightened. You may want to watch the video on my YouTube channel called Money or Materialism. -RG

      1. @Randy_Gage @ashome I just wanted to add my two cents if you all don't mind. I think what gets confusing is that a lot of religions and people will say money, and a pursuit of the material will not lead you to happiness, nirvana, enlightenment, self-actualization, etc... Really, I think the truth, and what the purpose of the statements is for us to realize that only love for ourselves alone, or love for God (I think loving God and loving ourselves is one and the same) can really bring us to that level of consciousness. I think it is true, and if you have money along with love of self, then Wahooo! I mean that is excellent! And nobody should be ashamed for their wealth, even if they aquire it to make themselves feel loveable. The pain in that is theirs alone and no one elses.

It is a trouble though that we use romantic love, money, food, material possessions, and many other things to fill that place that should be filled with self love.

I think Eastern religions to have grace as a part of their philosophies, I have to disagree with the Unity Church on that one. Also, my interpretation of Eastern Religions pursuit of the simplistic life, or the ascetic life of a monk, is a way to practice being one with the moment and the universe. I think in our fast paced Western culture it is not a bad idea to slow down sometimes and be more in the present. I need to do that more myself. Although, I do think you can find that and be present no matter what you are doing, even giving a speech at a church you could feel one with the universe.:)

So, I think you can load up on possessions if it pleases you, but only loving yourself will bring you that feeling of grace.

    2. I`ve checked out that video and some others again.

I suppose if we celebrate the material possessions and dont worship them theres no reason why we should give up possessions and theres no way they can hinder our growth if deep down it is a true celebration and not worship.

Loving ourselves/God is the way and why would material things stop us from doing that?

Thanks for the advice Randy and Annieb, much appreciated!!!

  3. So true Randy. I can see how Christianity has changed much since I was a kid. We are all perfectly imperfect beings and when our life gets off- kilter it is just a gentle nudge from the Universe to get ourselves back into alignment with who we really are.

  5. Aim for enlightenment, but don't starve to death under a tree. Even Buddha tried that and he thought it was a bad idea.

  10. What an amazing hymn.

I listened to Derek Prince explain this so beautifully about 10 days ago.

It has to be said - " there is nothing more irrestible than grace."

Makes such a difference from the old legalistic approach that unfortunately still lingers in many zealots even where I grew up in Ireland. The latter is fear motivated - the former is love motivated and perfect love casts out all fear...... I'll opt for grace every time.

  13. I feel a great deal of shame when I try to complete something worthwhile creatively. I know it's self-sabotage due to my crappy upbringing. I know a lot, I practice, and I am onnected well enough to succeed, but I get stuck. The shame and the guilt are overwhelming and I stop or put in a half-assed effort. I've talked to people about the worthiness issues, but I sometime shave trouble pushing through.I figured I'd be honest with you supportive folks out there. What do you do when you feel this way? I am sure even people who were raised in good environment have doubts, shame, and fears of their own.

    1. It's because if I succeed, I know I'll become an "eviL" rich creative person, and neither of those were considered good in my family.I have to get things out there. I have some connections now, but I have to do great work. I can easily do what other people want- i.e. perform improv or play someone's else's work, at the level of a "hobby" as I was told it was, and not a career.I ask of you out there to pray for me to get the strength I need to do God's work.

      1. @ThomasMrak Oh, sure Thomas you have a prayer from me. I feel sad about your comments. Sorry you feel that way. Do your parents make you feel that way? Maybe you need some more support? I don't know, but guilt and shame are yucky emotions to feel when you really shouldn't.

        1. @Annieb I didn't post because I want pity or to be a victim. I post here because I know almost everyone has had some place or something in their lives which blocks them, and they conquered their Mount Everest. This is my Mount Everest to climb.I have plenty of support now. I've sought people out all over the world. It now boils now to me dealing with this. If I don't succeed it's my fault this time.I won't get into details, but let's just say there was a lot of jealousy and negativity, and even abuse.

    2. @ThomasMrak I took that part of my life chapter apart - to find out why I feel this way and why this did happen, so once I understood completely I took it. I am kind-a lucky, being by nature a "logic analyzer", 2 service-programs in my brain supporting understanding on my own incl. reading and asking experts. I went on with learning inall those cases! My creative way - as a woman - took over..

  20. I`m just an ordinary person yet I had GRACE descend on me one day when I was sitting in a chair trying to puzzle something out to fix it, which I had been doing for 17 years Suddenly it was like I was faced with a truth as it seemed someone was speaking to me. It was a truth I didn`t like but it was really love speaking to me. Anyway why it seemed like GRACE was because 17 years of resentment which I didn`t know I had been harbouring just dissolved.and I was free and was able to let go of the person who I erroneously thought was causing it. There was no question of forgiveness, just a letting go. It was like a miracle.

    3. So true Randy. I can see how Christianity has changed much since I was a kid. We are all perfectly imperfect beings and when our life gets off- kilter it is just a gentle nudge from the Universe to get ourselves back into alignment with who we really are.

    10. What an amazing hymn.

I listened to Derek Prince explain this so beautifully about 10 days ago.

Makes such a difference from the old legalistic approach that unfortunately still lingers in many zealots even where I grew up in Ireland. The latter is fear motivated - the former is love motivated and perfect love casts out all fear...... I'll opt for grace every time.

    18. @Annieb I didn't post because I want pity or to be a victim.
