Your First Mastermind

Posted By: Randy GageJanuary 22, 2013

Napoleon Hill is probably best known for advocating the power of the Mastermind.  I’m a member of an informal Mastermind group with some bright friends, and another formal Mastermind group with some brilliant colleagues.   I swear by them, but I also am a big believer in another piece of advice from Hill, not as well known…

The first Mastermind alliance you must form is with yourself.

We all have duality, both positive and negative.  And the older most people get, the more they are drawn to the negative side.  This is because the vast majority of subliminal programming and mind viruses circling the globe today are of the negative and limiting variety.

So when you are offered an opportunity, you have two choices:

A) Wow, I could crush with this.

B) That works for other people, but it would never work for me.

When you get an unfavorable medical diagnosis:

A)  Okay.  But I can beat this.

B)  I wonder if I’ll make it.

When a business venture is failing:

A)  What lesson can I take from this to win the next time?

B)  I knew it would fail.  You have to have money to make money.

Every one of us has a “default setting.”  It is the mental attitude that determines whether we automatically go positive – or go negative.

There is a side of you that wants to wallow in victim-hood and validate every setback as preordained.  We absolve ourselves of responsibility, convince ourselves that we gave it our best effort, but it was just not to be.

There is another side of you that believes and has faith.  This side simply does not recognize defeat as anything but a temporary setback; a growing experience and opportunity to learn and modify.

It is this second side of you that creates greatness and does epic things.  That is the side of you that you must nurture.  Get in touch with that side of you and make that your first Mastermind alliance!

  1. Napoleon Hill was right --- and so are you, Randy! We have those "two sides" when we face questions.

It reminds me of the scene in that high intellectual, classic movie, Animal House! 🙂 The scene was when the frat house inductee had the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other. We all have to make decisions. Which way do we go?

Having a mastermind alliance creates a group of people who can hold us accountable to make the decision that is in our best interest long term. Cherishing and nurturing that "mastermind of yourself" is most important.

    Thanx for sharing this, Randy!

  4. Great reminder of this important principle, @Randy_Gage.  Proud to be in your informal group of "bright friends." 🙂

  5. I have learned from Byron Katie "The Work" (books, free videos & resources) that everyone has the same negative thoughts around the world...we have been having them for thousands of years or more... and they are the same negative thoughts repeated over & over... unless we notice & question them... and find peace in our own mind...

  6. Wow.. so GREAT Randy.. Thank you!! Fortunately, my mindset tends towards the first responses you've mentioned.. And a Mastermind group is what I aspire to build.. I took the first step by aligning with someone in the film/TV industry as a paid adviser who will open doors to others.. Regardless, I'm a BIG believer in what you've laid out here.. "Things turn out BEST for the people that make the BEST of the way things turn out"..

  12. I think most of us have the negative default setting. Even me. Only you can control your thoughts. Think about what you think about. Critically that is.

  16. Love your insights, Randy! We must take responsibility for the way we react to or think about things. It is what makes the difference between success and failure. Being negative takes a lot of work and energy....I can't understand why people go there!
    Great topic! Thanks a bunch.
