Your Next Comfort Zone
By Randy Gage
It’s a funny thing. When I’m on the last leg of a long trip, nothing screams comfort to me like pulling up at home. My place has a comfortable reassurance that provides me with peace and harmony.
Yet when I’m in a foreign land where I don’t speak the language and don’t know all that well, just seeing a American Airlines jet or a Starwood hotel can bring me comfort. There is a certain familiarity, and a connection to home.
Now if I need to get somewhere closer, I would much rather drive than face the hassles of traveling with American. But if I am in Ukraine and heading home, that AA jet is a sign of reassurance. The same jet has different connotations in different environments.
We all have restaurants that make us comfortable, comfort foods, even certain seats in the movie theatre. Of course many of these things are inanimate objects. The comfort we draw from them is the comfort we create in our mind.
If you asked me what separate the high level achievers from the average person I would say this: The achievers have fear of getting out of our comfort zones too. But we do it anyway, knowing that embracing fear creates new confidence. And then we create a new comfort zone at the higher level. Then we leave it again.
So how are you doing on that?
