There’s an old cliché in self-development: what would you do, if you knew you could not fail? It’s a great question, designed to get you to think bigger. It’s based on the assumption that people dial back their goals for fear of failure.
Noble idea, but not usually accurate…
Because the reason most people set smaller goals is because they are afraid they won’t fail. It’s all subconscious of course. But they’re afraid they’ll actually reach those goals, and for many people, that sets off the worthiness alarms. They think those lofty goals are only for “other’ people, people who deserve them more.
Food for thought. So what are yours?
P.S. Amsterdam, it’s great to be back!
I'm not sure it's always a fear of success based on worthiness - a fear of success can also be a fear of coping with the fruits: managing the money, security, maintaining friendships, and so on.
Two years ago, I got into a boat with a bunch of people who had water skiing talent way over my head. I was getting back into a sport which had deafened me 25 years earlier. They could go backwards on one foot with their hands in the air. No way could I ever do that, I thought. A 69 year old gal taught me to dream way bigger than I could imagine at the time. And a year and half later, I was on the water backwards doing the same trick. Reminds me of Mandela's quote: “There is no passion to be found playing small - in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.”
It seems to be a confidence issue with respect to setting and accomplishing smaller goals. I set both in my life - incremental goals of the larger goals and also little random goals of actions to complete, simply to builder a stronger and stronger belief in myself. It is a powerful process and has let to big changes in my life.
I feel that the most common comment on high goals is "be realistic!". The main meaning in that is - Dont change anything. Realistic is to look back on what already are accomplished and do not extend that limit. For me and of course many other people results may be scary and thats a human significance.
I the country wher I live we are age long ago thought the law of Jante which shortly says - Dont think you are powerful!
Concearning results I may re
citate an old friend of mine Werner Erhardt : "In life you wind up with one of two things - the results or the reason why you don't have the results. Results don't have to be explained. They just are."
My sponsor in network marketing told me: "Katya, I see, you fail again and again because you are afraid, that people will agree to join you. You don't know, what to do with them after signing the agreement"
It's totally true Randy. People have a huge fear of success because they think they are not worthy enough to be successful; based on ones's definition of course. To feel unworthy or less than is one of the most arrogant beliefs that one can carry. We were not created to be perfect Saints, we were created so that we can create and experience ourselves as we are without judgment.
Mine is generating a specific amount of recurring income in my business. Doing great, and no worthiness issues (used to, but got over them)... but I'm getting out of the "working by the clock" mindset and instead focusing on getting what my service is worth - whether I spend 1 hour on something, or 10 hours.
I have some specifics, but I'll keep them to my daily goal cards and spreadsheet I keep :)
By the way, I'm doing that by increasing leverage in the form of turning what I do for clients into both low-end and high-end information products. And working with a few select clients on a percentage basis instead of fee-based.
Great post Randy.
For some time I've been struggling with marketing my online business. Based on how I see things, others in the same business as mine are actually making a living. I can do the same. I'm making it a goal to do whether it takes to become successful by emulating the others.
Thanks for the encouragement!
This is so right on the money Randy!! Of course, I'm not telling you something you don't already know, LOL.
For me, this is also connected with resistance, which is yet another aspect of fear. I've actually been thinking about this of late and get reminders that when there's something I could do that's far and away different from what I'm used to, it's a good indication to do it! What have I got to lose?
So yes, my goals are major, but I'm going about getting there in steps. Small bits of progress every day. And I'm always in the inquiry into what's next along with the BIG thing which is Letting Go. We all love to cling to what's familiar and comfortable, when we KNOW those things that are not are where we REALLY must go! Thanks for the reminder.
I am about to tear down the fences! It´s time!!!
Time for my old, old dreams and I got closer. All my losses got me closer. I learned a lot while building up what I lost by now and now: I go for it!!!
I am tired of working as an employée but I still have to for a while, i am tired that others were above me for blocking me but not for lifting me up, like they were lifted. It was never my turn.
I learned that I have to go and take it on my own while others were in a chain.I got an online training which is thrilling and it speaks to me -
And in paralleI I plan to change the world ´cuz none ever was about to change it for me. I learned: it´s me who can do it!! It´s me who is going to do it. It´s for my dreams, it´s my extra booster which always kept me down, without attention. It´s like a half part of me, dried out, permanently neglected. It´s both roles I played for years in parallel and it´s both roles I have to lift now.
It´s my best argument when people ask WHY I do THIS and THAT. I am always being asked.....
My biggest dream , the light at the end of the tunnel is finding people who go for crazy research which I want to support financially. And then, if we find a solution, a science breakthrough for things everyone thinks cannot be changed, .....well, we´ll see.
But I won´t sit anymore and wait for somehing magical none will activate. Someone has to be first to start manifesting it!!!!!
Thanks Randy for the mental FOOD!!
