Is Poverty a Sin?

by Randy Gage

In yesterday’s post I said poverty was a sin.  Not surprisingly a few of you took umbrage to that.   But I stand by the statement.  Here’s why:

First I should clarify I don’t think it’s a sin to be born poor.  But it is a sin to stay that way.

Now it also would help if we define what sin actually means.  Of course most people would go with some kind of Biblical frame of reference for this.  But if you go back to the original Bible, which was written in Aramaic, the actual translation of sin means to “miss the mark.”

If you are a student of the Course in Miracles, then you know they would define sin as a lack of love.  I’m okay with either of these translations.  Because I believe that when we live in lack, we are missing the mark and missing the love our creator has for us.

When you are prosperous you are hitting the mark and accepting the love you are meant to have.  That’s why I say you were born to be rich.  So you up for that?

who do you think you are? the gospel is that the Lord has saved us and given us reconciliation and an amazing grace. but You false preachers speak that when you come to christ you will be given riches and money and you are exporting this message to africa and to the ends of the earth and rips the true gospel to shreads! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTc_FoELt8s. Your gospel is missing the point! you think abundance and riches are the gospel? when was it in the bible that any1 ever said I am so satisfied in the gospel because Jesus gave me a a BMW? and even when ever Jesus did give any healing or any miracle he shared his true message and that is that I have not come here to give you wealth on this earth but a life in the next! why dont you get the message in the gospels where it says "who sinned in this mans family to make him crippled?" "and christ replied this man was born like this so that my glory may be shown here today!" not some1 sinned or he sinned, thats why he does not have health and wealth. your message is a crap message

My name is Thomas and my wife Degdau Alla Degdau-Diedrich (Deaf) those who do not know me, I currently am the MLM Agel Enterprises, perhaps you've never heard of it ... We carry out work with a group of friends with business opportunities as a plan B, you can create a real money remaining entry) (dollars and would be happy for me that would be part of this great project.

I love your work. Discovered it today. It's a delight for me to find others who really "get it"...

to be god like? WOW.... hhmmmm makes me wonder....

i walked in the living room and said let their be light and there was.... thanks to my housekeeper who thought i was asking her to turn on the lights.

i then proceeded to the kitchen and walked on water, realizing this i went to the closet and grabbed the mop.

then in a moment of silence as i pondered my god like state, i hear my housekeepers voice from upstairs, "chip damnit" and i knew i must be a god, or atleast on my way....

i feel much better... thanks for pointing that out... sometimes its the little things we miss that make the biggest differences....

Poverty is not a sin. Poverty is a dilemma.

In the past I would have taken offense to you saying poverty is a sin - but I have learned that you are right. And I just say - keep it coming Randy, I appreciate your thoughts and sharing your ideas.

Rev 21:7 He that overcomes shall inherit all things, I shall be his God and he shall be my son.

I'd like to add that money is just the result of who we are, spiritually. In everything we do, a universal law applies that before it is physical, it is always spiritual.

And for that, I'd say that poverty in the spirit may be counted as a mental illness. Why? Because a person who consistently chooses poor thoughts matures poorly. He grows his spirit poorly and slowly it will devour his physical state. Then I'd say it is comparable to an illness we encounter in a physical state.

'Sin' has a lot of baggage that may take a long long time to unpack.

There is a 'gap' between our reality of our worthiness and our worthiness. It is in this gap that 'being' poor is far easier than 'being' rich. Poor is a great excuse for everything. Most people use the excuse 'I was born that way' as their ultimate excuse not to have to live up to any standard but the one they choose to live down to for themselves. The more faults you can find with the ‘rich’ the more excuses you pile on top of your being poor. People wall themselves off from their ultimate potential and once we begin to justify our ‘place’ based on any set of excuses or reasons we are sure and guaranteed to lose what little we had to begin with.

Ренди, после того, как я почитала ваши книги, у меня появились мечты! Да, я была бедная, и думала, что это нормально. Но сейчас я борюсь, чтоб стать богатой. Please, sorry for russian, i know english bad, but i want say about it, it is very important for me!

i am all for a house falling on me before i get the message lol... you're doing a great job of getting the word out and leading... keep it up.....

love this ... absolutely !!!

Hi guys interesting Reading all this. I thing ther is mo such thing as Sin on this planet. We are Godlike beings and that meens we are Gods. And whatever way we are here on this planet is ok. You poor is ok you rich is ok too. All is just experience and we are not for ever here. Most important that one is happy and has a peace inside. Most important is to understand who we are

I feel a bit of a 'deja vu' regarding my thoughts after reading this blogged topic.... I often listen and think and when I read the word "SIN" I hear "without" translating from spanish to english. It is truly sin being poor, being undereducated, under movitated, without goals, without encouragement, sin vergüenzas - well mostly... great food for thought, Randy!

I TOTALLY AGREE Randy!
We were not created in the image of God to live in Poverty although He was kind enough to allow us to make our own choices...
Thanks for sharing with us.
Make it a great day!
God Bless,

I guess I agree, somewhat...isn't all of this relative to how you view prosperity, wealth, sin etc.. I mean I've reading the blog for about a week now and my personal opinion is that it's all in what a person's values.

I'm a single mom, and at one time was homeless with my two children. I was also 100 pounds over what I weigh now. Fast forward 10 years, I lost the weight, I'm in a townhouse, got a decent car, family is stable and I feel very blessed. I don't have half the income you may have, but I value the stability that we have been able to achieve more than anything.

Not that I think there's anything wrong with having things, people should do what's best for them. As for me, if my teenage kids still feel that I'm the go to person for their questions about life..I'm a rich woman.

We were born to become God like, as we are the children of God (not a macaque))
Failure to live up to this standard is a sin in a way.
So what is it to be God like?

Absolutely! Being poor in anything is a sin.

I see.

That means that a change in mindset can result in changing one's life.

Been working on that everyday.

Thanks Randy.

It is a sin not to believe what God has planted in us, claiming that what has been is only what it is, and not stepping out in faith from the comfort zone into the unknown. Always enjoy your post. Look forward to the next one. S

Perhaps that's a bit rash. But we do know that prosperity isn't money and things; it is a state of mind. And poverty isn't an absence of money and things; it is a state of mind also.

Randy,

After learning about psychology and human behavior in an effort to explore myself and understand others, I wonder if poverty could be considered a mental illness? It cripples people mentally and physically the way depression and other maladies of the mind do.

If that's rash, let me know.

-Tom

Poor people are poor because they have poor habits!

Randy I agree. As I have said many times, we are made in the Image of God. No where does God portray poverty whether it is His creation or the explanation of the afterlife. Everything He does is top of the line.

Hello? What am I doing here every day? :)

I love your thoughts on this!

Randy,

This is such a great post. Our Minister Nancy Norman was saying last night "That if you ask most people about money and the Bible, they will tell you that, "money is the root of all evil". She stated that the Bible says the LOVE of money is the root of all evil." To us this means that we forget every thing else about prosperity, but money and that is our only focus. We believe money is a part of prosperity.

We recently read the book, "The Science of Getting Rich", by Wallace Wattles. Written in 1910 the book teaches that it is a sin to stay poor. That in every area of our life it is required that we become successful.

Your blog is great. Hope to see you in South Florida soon,
Jim Story

Nothing else needs to be said Randy ... Right on!

In my opinion, it's a sin to be poor in spirit... when we know there's a life of abundance that is possible and available to us, and we deliberately turn away, choosing to ignore the many gifts and possibilities that are available for us. That, I believe, is the sin.

We are hearing impaired (Deaf) from Germany and I am Agel and Deaf together. I thank with Agel and Randy Gage. We soon hope to see again Randy Gage.

Randy... I do agree that it's a "sin" (such a STRONG word- makes me squirm in my seat just writing it - but it's gets the message across) if the person cannot afford the basis necessities in life and they are asking the government/family/friends for help when they are completely able bodied people... then yes it is a sin! 100% yes!

But however if they are living within their means, not knowing any better (i.e. country people in 3rd world countries) and are completely happy & content then no it is not a sin.

Rich does not necessarily have to mean money.

IMHO!

Lori

I agree poverty is a sin, but people need someone to guide them and help them out of these conditions, that is if they want to be helped. Now what should those of us not in poverty, but not in prosperity focus on to get to the prosperous area-I know study and read books, etc but that sometimes is not eough. How aobut sharing some of the things that you did to get to where you are now-this would be greatly appreciated

PS-See you at the Opera

Not only am I up for being rich, it's my birthright! .. And by BEING rich I help and inspire others to do the same. And what greater fulfillment in Life is there than to inspire others to greatness, possibility and living their dream?

So now it's a matter of accepting that I'm rich and taking the action.. NOW.

Thanks Randy.

I would even go a step further and say that it's a sin to not give 100% to any endeavor you are involved with. If you are a singer, shouldn't you work hard to become the best that you can possibly be? As a parent, you should work hard to be the best parent possible for your kids (and yourself). To neglect and fall short of that is a sin also in my opinion.

I was born poor and struggled to be whealthy . I trained myself in a lucrative profession and became whealthy.
Then I choosed not to move on and found myself not prepared for abundance and prosperity and became a abuser to drinks.

I lost all and chosed for tooooo many years to be poor and a victim for circumstances that most of them really never had existed.

I suddenly woke up last year and start to study prosperity and recieved tools through your system and found the path.

In the mean time I gain prosperity today I work hard for bring people with me on the way to a extraordinary life.

Thank you Randy , its been a pleasure to meet you and follow your "simply" way. Simpel but not effordless if I communicate okey ?
